BUTUAN CITY - Close to 14,000 jobs, both foreign and domestic, await job applicants as mega job fairs will open in various localities during the Labor Day celebration on May 1, the government's labor agencies announced yesterday.
The mega job fairs will be opened in various regional offices of the Department of Labor and Employment, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Butuan City and Cagayan de Oro City.
All accredited recruitment agencies of the government will participate. In Butuan City alone, government agencies are opening 8,000 jobs while Cagayan de Oro will also open more than 5,000 jobs for employment abroad and locally, officials said.
Along with the local government units, the DoLE, the POEA and the OWWA are joining hand-in-hand to address the unemployment problem in the two regions in Mindanao, in line with the job generation program of the Aquino Administration, said Region XIII DoLE Regional Director Ofelia B. Domingo.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is also joining the job fairs.
Currently, the POEA is searching for a skills registry to match the job skills to be brought here during the job fairs.
OWWA Caraga has also opened a training hall that will serve as a venue for OFWs to be trained with different livelihood opportunities, especially those who were displaced due to calamities and political crises abroad.
Region XIII OWWA Regional Director Dr. Marietta A. Lumawag said dependents of OFWs may also participate in the trainings.
"Through this, we will be training the displaced OFWs as well as their dependents to venture in livelihood opportunities. By joining the trainings they may find a way to engage in business in the future," Lumawag said.
The region's OWWA chief said this week, business opportunity seminars will be conducted "so that as soon as the OFWs will have their business plans, they will immediately be given livelihood funds."
Lumawag said funding of livelihood opportunities will be sourced from the National Reintegration Center for OFWs. "The fund of this center comes from the General Appropriations Act," she said.
