15 tourists killed in China bus plunge

Fifteen tourists were killed and another 19 injured when their bus plunged into a ravine, Chinese authorities said -- the latest deadly accident on the nation's dangerous roads.

The incident happened on Saturday morning after the bus took a bend on a highway in Shanxi province, the government of Jincheng city -- where the accident took place -- said in a statement.

So far, 15 people have died and another 19 have been taken to hospital, it said on Saturday, adding the bus had travelled from the neighbouring province of Henan and the exact cause of the accident was still being investigated.

Photographs on the government's news website showed rescuers hauling passengers out of the 50-metre (165-feet) gorge on stretchers, some with blood on their faces, with the bus lying on its side, its windows completely smashed.

China's roads are notoriously dangerous, with traffic laws and safety widely flouted.

Earlier this month at least 28 people were killed and dozens injured in three separate bus crashes that occurred on a single day in southern China.

According to police statistics, around 70,000 people die and 300,000 more are injured in road accidents every year in China, state media have reported.

But the World Health Organisation said in a recent study the true figure was almost twice that number, citing hospital and medical clinic statistics.

Take my word (I have lived in China for 17 years), China's tourism insfrastructure is still very backwards. Be really careful when you go there, pick only the top service providers, cheap services can KILL you, literally. Some people will say anything just to make 20 dollars off you!!

        Ya, I agree.
Especially the women there, they just want to go to your bed, because they want to try their luck hoping that you will keep them.

Accidents do not just happen. They are caused in one way or another. Either its because the drivers are careless, tired and sleepy, in a hurry etc. In one of my holiday trip to Kunming, we had to beg the driver to go slow. The road was really bad and it was raining heavily. We could hardly see whats in front of us but the driver was going at a really fast speed. He kept tellng us "Its OK, this is normal. Thank GOD we were really OK. Its really scary.

I've been to China several time and i know the "nature" of the roads there are very challenging. I bet many Singaporean driver will find it difficult to handle the road there.

What a waste. If he had only read the recruitment page in china to work in singapapore as foreign talent (bus driver), he could have gotten here, earn as much as 120,000 RMB per annum, get to scold passengers to get off the bus, get to greet passengers in chinese as that's the only language he needs to know, get to crash into bus stops and bus bays, get to overshoot the stop line, get to take the wrong route and cause inconvenience to his passengers, get to ...... ahhh...what a waste!

If SBS or SMRT hire China drivers,I will pray each time when I take bus driven by china driver. No matter how much training provided or advices on safety first, their old farking habit die hard.

Even the safest road like in Singapore there are still fatal accidents. Not to mention those in China. If you have been there then you will understand that many "safe driver" will be tested if they drive on the road there, especially roads that have to past by hills, slopes, ravine, cliff etc...Education on 'ROAD SAFTY' is the best to minimised such deadly accident. Think of your love one. Having said that now you decide whether the drivers there are lousy!
