MANILA, Philippines - The Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc., composed of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and some local government colleges, is marking twin milestones - its 25th Annual National Conference and Silver Anniversary Celebration on February 20-22, 2012, at the Historic Landmark Manila Hotel.
Organized in 1987, AACCUP is closely allied with the Association of Local Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation, Inc. (ALCUCOA), organized in 2003. It is a member of the National Network of Quality Assurance Agencies Inc., the Hong Kong-based Asia-Pacific Quality Network, and the Hague-based International Network of Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education.
AACCUP accreditation is a process by which an institution at the tertiary level evaluates its educational activities and seeks an independent judgment to confirm that it substantially achieves its objectives, and is generally equal in quality to comparable institutions. Accreditation is considered an effective means to ensure quality in academic programs and institutions. Some foreign universities consult AACCUP regarding the accreditation status of programs attended by Filipino students seeking admission.
Accreditation in SUCs is by program, such as elementary teacher education, civil engineering, and agriculture. Among the criteria used to assess programs are mission, goals and objectives, faculty, curriculum and instruction, students, and research. Programs that are awarded accreditation status lend prestige to the institutions.
