Actor who had role on "Seinfeld" shoots self

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Character actor Daniel von Bargen, who has appeared in dozens of movies and television shows including "Seinfeld" and "Malcolm in the Middle," was hospitalized after shooting himself in the head at his Cincinnati-area condominium, authorities said Wednesday.

Von Bargen, 61, told a Cincinnati-area emergency dispatcher on Monday that he had shot himself in the temple with a .38-caliber pistol at his home and could not open his left eye.

"I shot myself in the head and I need help," von Bargen told the emergency dispatcher in a call from his home in Montgomery, Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati-born actor told the dispatcher he was diabetic and had a scheduled hospital appointment later on Monday where at least a few toes could be amputated. He said he was lying on a bed with his head propped on a pillow.

"I was supposed to go to the hospital today and I didn't want to," von Bargen said.

The actor played Mr. Kruger in several episodes of the TV series "Seinfeld" and he appeared in "Malcolm in the Middle" more than a dozen times as commandant Spangler, according to IMDb.com.

Police officers responding to the emergency call could be heard telling von Bargen to keep his hands visible and asking him if there was another handgun in the apartment. Police described him later as very cooperative.

Von Bargen was taken to Bethesda North Hospital, part of TriHealth, where he was stabilized and transported by helicopter to University Hospital, TriHealth spokesman Joe Kelley said.

Von Bargen's condition on Wednesday night was not immediately clear. A University Hospital spokeswoman said they had no patient by that name.

Attempts to reach a representative of the actor or his relatives were unsuccessful on Wednesday.

It's easy to sit in front of a computer screen and make obnoxious comments about someone so depressed that he would try to take his life, but unless you have been in his situation you don't know how depressing this can make a person. As I diabetic, I have had two toes amputated, one on each foot. It's a very scary thought that you go into surgery thinking you will have a toe amputated but could very easily come out of surgery with possibly the entire foot amputated. Stop and think how you would be emotionally if you were in his situation. I personally wish him the best.

my respects to you ANASCARFAN, and thank you for let us know how insensitive the human being can be. I admire that guy, Costanza's boss, a little weird but funny.

What does diabetes do to the feet? I have seen "diabetic socks" and warnings on pumice stone things not to be used on diabetics. Im just wondering...?

Anascafan, you've gone thru your issues, did you try to killed yourself? Losing toes, legs, anybody, did you try to kill yourself? Appartently he did not want to die, he did what he should have done in the begining ask for HELP, now with such a STUPID move on his part, his career maybe over. AND JUST MAYBE GOD SPOKE TO HIM, AND TOLD HIM, HE WASN'T GOING ANYWHERE DEAL WITH THESE ISSUES LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, THAT'S WHY I GAVE YOU THAT BRAIN. And that's probably why he ask for HELP

That's too bad, I know he had one of his legs already amputated. He was in Clive Barkers' Lord of Illusions, and Super Troopers. After reading this blog and reading some of the comments, I don't know how you idiots can make this into a political topic. The man tried to kill himself, maybe he's getting tired of losing his limbs, show a little compassion... You efffen idiots!

I guess most people on here have had life real easy if they can't have sympathy for someone in a great deal of pain.......

I hope things get better for him.

compassion..........either you have it or you dont..it does grow on you as you age. but as you can see, the human race has become selfish and can respect themselves.........a world of privilaged ego manic's...just knowing , writing this hurts my soul

Diabetes is a body and mind killer. Pray for a cure.

50% or more can cure themselves by becoming UN-obese, getting the BMI
        down toe 15% or less..and avoiding sugar/grease/fat/salt.

Need an osteopath/chiropractor and eliminate junk from your diet. Also for type I you have to avoid cold climates. More outbreak in winter than summer. Winter cold triggers attacks.

Even taking good care of yourself, Diabetes wears the hell out
of a persons body. I've made it almost 50 years with the disease, but at 54 I'm struggling with health complications and tire easily. When I applied to Social Security for early retirement, they flat out denied me.

I understood from a different news source that he'd already lost one leg, so it was something more than "a few toes". Poor guy. My heart goes out to him. Dying by inches is not something that is easy to face.
      • bitacrumpet 2 months ago
Thank you, Chypre but try explaining that to some of the retards that write many of the comments.
      • BrannigansLaw 2 months ago
Agreed...but we are all dying by inches everyday.

women will tell you dying by inches is great & rewards a hard one (spray) to the face.

Some of the comments are incomprehensible. A man felt desperate enough that he felt taking his own life was the solution, and people are posting the most inhumane comments. What is wrong with these morons? I hope Daniel recovers and gets the help that he needs.

Good post I've been type 2 for 6 years and had to alter my lifestyle a fair bit
and not get so busy as to skip meals and exercise properly. It still gets depressing
not knowing whats happening inside your body,or why.
      • anonymous 2 months ago
You're very lucky that your condition can be controlled by diet and exercise! I'm sure it does get very depressing having to alter your lifestyle, while not understanding completely what's going on with your body or why. Depression is a terrible thing, but there's nothing so bad that someone should feel that ending their life is the answer. There are so many people who care and can offer help to those in need. I commend you on doing what it takes to keep yourself healthy! Best of luck to you!

I dealt with cancer six years ago. For thirty years I have had to deal with my fingers and toes getting so cold at times I could have collapsed into a fetal position. Just two weeks ago, while walking in the snow with the best boots I own my two largest right middle toes got extremely cold and then damp as that boot has a slight leak. Well a week later those same toes blistered on the bottom, and prier to that they were hurting horrible. I had the same feelings of despair with the toes as I did the cancer six years earlier, as the amputation possibility stressed my mind. Daniel von Bargen, may you recover and get better, I feel as if I've felt your pain, I'm also your age..

I think I'd rather lose a few toes then not being able to open one eye. Suicide attempts are so sad. To think one's mind goes to such a dark desperate place. I hope this talented actor finds joy and peace.

Sad that he felt he needed to do this. I hope he gets the help he needs.

He's the boss who said George had to go by the nickname of Coco the Monkey and not t-bone.
He was also invited over for Festivus after George gave him a phoney x-mas gift in the name of the Human Fund.

Anyone who attempts suicide is obviously not in the right mental state. Depression can cause people to do things they would never comtemplate under normal circumstances. I love how some people rant on about suicide being a selfish act....NO, it is an act of a severly sick person who sees no future. I know a couple of people who attempted suicide early in life (late teens) and got the proper help and are still doing fine in their late 40's. I know of 2 who committed suicide, one in his early 20's, and another in his late 60's. The one in his early 20's was involved in an auto accident and was never able to recover from the brain damage that impaired his ability to do many things he could previously do. He was being treated for severe depression. The man in his 60's, absolutely no one would have ever thought he would do it (he was found days later when he didn't show up for volunteer work). Only after reading his suicide note did anyone know that he too was being treated for depression.

I wish Daniel von Bargen the best of luck. One part of this story that was omitted is that he had one of his legs amputated recently because of complications from diabetes. This man has probably been going through a person hell lately and reached his limit. I hope he gets the help he needs.
