Adele breaks Whitney Houston's chart record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The late Whitney Houston was unable to oust Adele from the top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the British singer's "21" replaced "The Bodyguard" as the longest running No. 1 album by a woman.

Boosted by her six Grammy awards and performance comeback, Adele's "21" saw its biggest sales week yet in 52 weeks on the U.S. chart, selling 730,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.

That gave Adele her 21st week at the top spot, beating the record held by Houston with her 1992 "Bodyguard" album. "21" which features hits like "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" has now sold more than 18 million copies worldwide since its release in February 2011, Adele's Columbia Record label said.

The 23 year-old singer and songwriter also saw a surge in sales for her debut album, "19," which sold 87,000 copies.

Houston's songs also saw a huge sales rise following her death in a Beverly Hills hotel on February 11 and a touching tribute by Jennifer Hudson at the Grammy awards on February 12.

Seven of Houston's albums re-entered the Billboard chart this week, led by "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" compilation at No. 2, selling 175,000 copies. Her self-titled album sold 17,000 to take the 37th spot.

Houston's "I Will Always Love You" single took the No. 2 spot in the Billboard Digital Songs Chart.

    GRAMMY BOOST

The Billboard 200 album chart reflected a Grammy-influenced boost for other artists.

Pop singer Bruno Mars, who was nominated for six Grammys but went home empty-handed, still saw his album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" notch the No. 8 position, boosted by his retro-inspired uptempo performance of "Runaway Baby" at the Los Angeles awards show.

His album was followed by Grammy's best country album winners Lady Antebellum's "Own The Night" at No. 9 and newcomers The Civil Wars, who picked up two Grammy awards, rounded out the top 10 with "Barton Hollow."

Country singer Jason Aldean, Rihanna, British band Coldplay and country group The Band Perry all saw their albums climb the top 20.

Katy Perry, who stormed back defiantly in her first big public performance at the Grammys after husband Russell Brand filed for divorce in December, saw her new single "Part of Me" notch the top spot on the Billboard Digital Songs chart, with 411,000 downloads.

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" and "Set Fire to the Rain" took No. 3 and No. 4 on the Digital Songs chart respectively.

Adele is a singing artist in her own right, just like the late Ms. Whitney Houston. Their musical genre's are of two different styles. Adele will never compare to Ms. Houston, and Ms. Houston will never compare to Adele. Being number 1 on musical charts isn't what counts, it's how you love and are loved in return is what matters most. R.I.P. Ms. Whitney Houston, and congratulations in your own right Adele. Both are fabulous and beautiful women inside and out - regardless of their mistakes - public or private. Remember everyone, "None of us can cast a stone, rock or boulder with out reproach - WE ARE ALL IMPERFECT!"

Thank you for posting something intelligent. Very well said, and very true. Adele's songs touch the heart and soul and she is a wonderful artist. Whitney had an amazing voice, different genre. So sad she wasted her gifts, but I feel for her and the hurt she must have felt to destroy herself like that. People who are happy and content don't do those things. Beauty and money, sadly, could not heal her pain, whatever that was.

Whats all the fuss? Whitney will always be the standard voice. And we will always love her.
But that doesnt mean Adele shouldnt bask in her own recent success, and all good people should wish her well!

Exactly, I can't imagine her making another album and it'll be sounding just like this one. I mean, she's great and all, but it gets old too.

Interesting time. Adele's rising star as Whitney's fades out. Both huge news on Grammy weekend. I was watching Whitney videos: how much joy she expressed as she effortlessly lifted up into her upper range - similar to Adele's obvious joy singing at the Grammy's.

comparing these two artists are just wrong. They are different. Genre is different. Weight is different.

how about just different genre...why does weight have to be in the mix?

I bet Whitney could smoke more rock in an hour than Adele could in a month.

People who have nothing to say about adele music, voice or sound.
talk about her weight. She's beautiful both inside and out.
Hate all you want......... while she smiles to the bank.
      • L.L 2 months ago
How do you know she's beautiful inside?

You've spent alot of time with her?

        You grew up with her?

You are part of her family?

        You a best friend?

Try to seperate reality from show business fantasy.

You, me and anyone else who does not know her personally has no clue as to how beautiful or not she is inside or how beautiful or not ANYBODY is inside.

Uh - I don't think the "article" said anything about Adele being a better singer than Whitney Houston, just that her album "21" has been #1 on the charts longer than Whitney's "The Bodyguard". I love Whitney Houston's music. She IS in a class by herself. I also love Adele's music. Two different kind of singers.

Well siad Tvwwriter! We love Whitney, but congrats to Adele.
    • Jacob  •  2 months ago
Because she is the best and I love Adele..she deserves the recognition from the industry because they cannot ignore her..the people love her and identify with her message.
The industry and TV only care about ratings and heap praise on those who are most succesful for their own monetary gain. I think EVERYBODY should give the middle finger salute to big TV and corporate conglomerates! Adele has my respect.
