Child rights advocates push for law banning corporal punishment

By Alexander VillafaniaQUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—Corporal punishment or inflicting physical pain as punishment is said to have both short and long term negative effects on a child's behavior.Advocates against it are pushing for the passage of a bill that bans corporal punishment, stating that parents must learn to use positive discipline approaches to help children grow up better. ...

Amid the "Sendong" (international name “Washi”) disaster which has so far left over 500 dead, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III was apparently "partying" with members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG), an actress accidentally reveals.

Valerie Concepcion tweeted Sunday night that she was at the Palace and was set to perform three songs for the PSG party.

She also said in her Twitter account that Aquino laughed at her jokes and enjoyed her performance, but this tweet had been deleted after she and the President received a backlash.

However, Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang said Aquino just dropped by the PSG party.

"He briefly went there. The President felt he had to drop by the party, these are the people who guard him. He was there for less than 30 minutes," Carandang told Yahoo! Southeast Asia in a phone interview.

Carandang said the PSG party have already been earlier scheduled and the party was already paid for so it was impractical to cancel it.

And even if the president was at the party, Carandang said the President made sure all rescue and humanitarian efforts were in place.

"[The backlash] is understandable. But let us be reminded that agencies are still doing their jobs," Carandang added.

Media reports say over 650 have been confirmed dead while 800 are missing in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro and in other areas in Southern and Central Mindanao, as "Sendong'  whipped the areas Saturday night.

Carandang said the President has also canceled the Christmas party for Cabinet members initially set Monday night and the funds will instead be sent for relief efforts.

He noted that members of the Cabinet will also be donating money from their own pockets.

Aquino is set to visit typhoon-hit areas on Tuesday, said Carandang.

Concepcion, meanwhile, has apologized for for her earlier tweets.

She clarified that she was invited to perform at the PSG party but she does not see anything wrong with Aquino dropping by the event.

"I do not see anything wrong with that since its his obligation and responsibility being the head of Malacañang to be present and show his support for his hardworking employees and their respective families. But I believe that it doesn't mean that the president is not thinking of ways to help our kababayan(s) in Mindanao. It doesn't mean that the president is disregarding the plight of our fellow Filipinos. Let's not be too quick to judge," the actress said.

Concepcion also issued an apology if she "offended" people and "sounded insensitive."

"I am very sorry. It wasn't my intention to do either. I can't imagine how difficult life is for the people affected in Mindanao and how difficult it is to be the president of the Philippines at this moment," she said.

People had it coming. They allow tress to be cut down, mangled the biodiversity of the surrounding hills, abused nature's resources. About time to realize that trees and plants are the front-liners against such forces. It's not a natural disaster. It's a tragedy that man created. Of course, if it would serve your purpose and interest, you can always blame the President.
      • Timothy Israel 5 months ago
Nobody blamed the president for that tragedy. I think people were just saying hes insensitive

      • bowen 5 months ago
If there's to blame for the tragedy, it's the people who contributed to this tragedy....those who allowed, or even took part in denuding the forests surrounding CDO. The vice-mayor even admitted that. PNOY's "insensitivity" would be very pale and insignificant as compared to the what the people of CDO did (or did not do) as far as this tragedy is concerned.

        RIP to the dear departed.

@Luis, I think it is immaterial pero sagutin na rin kita. And OO, my family and I are environmentalist and care for the environment. Now, did that satisfy you? How did it help the victims? Kung lahat ng bumabatikos kay Pnoy ay sasagutin ka at sagotin in the same manner that I did, meron bang mabuting mangyayari? You on the other hand is not helping. If you keep blind to PNoy's ineptitude and praise him for his poor management especially in times of national disasters and crisis, lalo lang lalaki ang ulo niya at sabihing sa PULSE ASIA SURVEY ay tama ang kanyang pamamalakad.

Difference between Pinoy and his corrupt predecessors: their PR people.

The incumbent's staff is very incompetent. They should have had the initiative to advise the President about events that are, quite simply, a media disaster one way or the other. In this case, the PR pukes are insensitive enough not to know that this is a moment where PNoy should have put up even a token effort to show the Filipino people that he's on top of the situation. But no: nobody seemed to have bothered. It took a lot of criticism for Aquino to finally get off his butt. Where are those advisers? That's what he gets for appointing closet gays and other questionable characters in his Presidential staff. Oh, wait...is this his version of Erap's "midnight cabinet"? They do drinks, women, gambling. PNoy's? They do each other! Effing f.a.g.g.o.t.s!

to the YELLOW ARMY, YELOOW RIBBON, YELLOW SUBMARINE:

hangan saan kau pwede magbubulag bulagan na napaka inutil ng presidente ninyo...fact, instead of going to evacuation centers, pinapunta pa sa gym ung mga evacuees para makita si presidente ninyo, as much as possible we wants himself to be comfortable...bakit hindi siya pumunta mismo sa evacuation centers para makita ang masisisikip na lugar at mga kalunos lunos na pangyayari...yah ryt, ayaw niya pala ng mga negative reports, gusto niya lang ung mga magaganda pangyayari...sobra sa pagka abnoy....ang galing niya mangbatikos pero ang pinag gagawa niya wala rin...

he is so much comfortable sa malacanang with all the foods, air conditioned rooms, party party, etc, habang ang mga kababayan niya wala ng maiinom....

NOYNOY RESIGN!!! The country needs someone to LEAD and WORK for the Filipinos. Let VP Binay assume the Presidency. At least si Binay can be a uniting factor sa mga Filipino. He can unite those Filipinos against corruption, those who want the rule of law to be followed, and those who want the economy to improve with a President who can work on a program of good governance. NOYNOY RESIGN!!! BINAY SA MALACANANG!!!

      STEPS PARA NAIWASAN ITO:
      1. KUNG HINUSAYAN NG GOBYERNO DISASTER PREVENTION PREPAREDNESS
      - NI SOUND SYSTEM NA NAKADIKIT SA POSTE OR CAMERA WALA, DAPAT AUTOMATIC NA MAGSASALITA NA WARNING NA LIKE, "UMAKYAT SA MAATAS NA LUGAR THIS IS NOT A DRILL" ETC... HINDI PURO SAGWAN AT RUBBER BOATS LANG
-- DAPAT MAY NAGMOMONITOR NYAN ANG PROBLEMA KASE NASA MINDANAO HINDI SILA NABIBIGYAN NG HI-TECH NA ASSISTANCE PURO MAYNILA LANG KAYA SUGGESTION KO IKAW MISMO PINOY TUMIRA SA CDO NG MALAMAN MO SITUASYON,
      2. LAGI NAKAFOCUS SA MAYNILA SA LUZON (KAYA NAG-AAMOK ANG MINDANAO PAANO HANGGANG NYAON PROBINSYA PARIN SILA NI SINEHAN YATA WALA PA DIN,
HINDI KO INAAWAY MINDANAO SINASABI KO BIGYAN NG TAMANG FOCUS ANG SUGGESTION KO MAGLAGAY KA NG OPISINA SA MINDANAO DUN MO IUPO SI BINAY O IKAW MISMO AT I AM SURE WALA PA 24 HOURS DAMI MO IAAMOK NA CHANGES DUN.
      3. BAKIT NA LANG GANITO, BAKIT KAILANGAN MAY MAMATAY MUNA BAGO ANG PAGBABAGO? PWEDE BA PINOY PUMILI KA CABINET MEMBER NA BATA, WAG PURO MATATANDA BAKA 1960 PA ALAM NYAN.
      4. TINGNAN NYO JAPAN, MARCH 11, 2011 AFTERMATH NG CRISIS NILA TO THINK NA NAGREREKLAMO NA MGA CITIZEN NILA SA PRESIDENT NILA HA PERO ANG ORGANIZED PADIN NILA... BAKIT KAYA?

      Part I
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D., a Swiss American psychiatrist, the author of the book On Death and Dying (1969 - the Kübler-Ross model) once stated: "In Switzerland I was educated in line with the basic premise: work work work. You are only a valuable human being if you work. This is utterly wrong. Half working, half dancing - that is the right mixture. I myself have danced and played too little."

What has happened in the Philippines is a terrible tragedy. We can go back and forth and point fingers but that will not resolve anything. To establish our "Shanti Nilaya" (Home of Peace) as Dr. Kubler Ross once stated, we have to go through a grieving process. The The Five Stages of Grief is a process by which people cope and deal with grief and tragedy. The stages:
1.Denial — "I feel fine."; "This can't be happening, not to me." denial is usually only a temporary defense for the individual. This feeling is generally replaced with heightened awareness of possessions and individuals that will be left behind after death.
2.Anger — "Why me? It's not fair!"; "How can this happen to me?"; '"Who is to blame?" Once in the second stage, the individual recognizes that denial cannot continue. Because of anger, the person is very difficult to care for due to misplaced feelings of rage and envy.
3.Bargaining — "I'll do anything for a few more years."; "I will give my life savings if..." The third stage involves the hope that the individual can somehow postpone or delay death. Usually, the negotiation for an extended life is made with a higher power in exchange for a reformed lifestyle. Psychologically, the individual is saying, "I understand I will die, but if I could just do something to buy more time..."
4.Depression — "I'm so sad, why bother with anything?"; "I'm going to die soon so what's the point... What's the point?"; "I miss my loved one, why go on?" During the fourth stage, the grieving/dying person begins to understand the certainty of death. Because of this, the individual may become silent, refuse visitors and spend much of the time crying and grieving. This process allows the dying person to disconnect from things of love and affection. It is not recommended to attempt to cheer up an individual who is in this stage. It is an important time for grieving that must be processed.
5.Acceptance — "It's going to be okay."; "I can't fight it, I may as well prepare for it." In this last stage, individuals begin to come to terms with their mortality, or that of a loved one, or other tragic event.

I never liked this P-noy anyway. When I see his face, I can't see any sign of nobility, greatness of character and goodness. Maybe Cory was holy and good, but it doesn't follow that P-noy is. His character is so vengeful. All the days in his reign as President, he has been wasting his energy and resources in prosecuting hus enemies. Shame on you!!! Be careful of Karma! You think it won''t happen to you!!!
