Badminton players told skirts will boost bottom line

Badminton's biggest controversy in years involves not cheating, not drugs, but skirts, with crunch talks on Saturday set to decide on a saga which has divided the sport.

At a showdown in the Chinese seaside city of Qingdao, badminton's chiefs will attempt to convince doubtful associations that a new ruling forcing women players to wear skirts or dresses is not sexist, but a smart marketing tool.

The move caused such uproar that its enforcement has already been delayed by a month, but the sport's Kuala Lumpur-based top brass appear confident of persuading critics it's a crucial gambit to improve badminton's bottom line.

"The reason we want the skirt regulation is to promote women's events, which are getting less and less popular," Badminton World Federation deputy president Paisan Rangsikitpho said during the ongoing Sudirman Cup in Qingdao.

"The bottom line is: they could earn more sponsorship and more money."

He had previously stressed that it "has never been the intention of the BWF to portray women as sexual objects, and nor is that what we are doing".

China, Indonesia and India are among a host of countries who have raised fierce objections, while in Malaysia, the opposition Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS) called for a boycott of tournaments.

With the new directive set to come into force on June 1, even players are torn. The rule says skirts or dresses must be worn, even if they are over the top of shorts or trousers.

"I think it's a little bit ridiculous," said Ragna Ingolfsdottir of Iceland, who chooses to wear a skirt because she finds it less restrictive.

"Some girls here just want to wear shorts because they think it's more comfortable, so why make them wear skirts if they don't want to?

"I don't think it's about sexism, but will it make more people watch? I don't know. I don't think in Iceland it matters but somewhere in the world perhaps it does."

Ingolfsdottir admitted the publicity over the issue -- though not all of it has been good -- had at least raised the sport's profile.

"There are different views on it and in some ways the publicity is good, but for the players that don't like it, it's not good for them. But maybe it's good for badminton as a whole," she told AFP.

Hong Kong's Chau Hoi Wah is very much in the shorts camp. "I don't really see the point in women having to wear skirts," she said, adding shorts were more comfortable and "more appropriate" when stretching for a shot.

"I know it's to attract sponsors, but isn't there another way it can be done? Are people really going to come and watch because a girl is wearing a skirt or a tank-top? And if they are, are they really supporting badminton?"

But many players at the Sudirman Cup said they had no issue with the ruling. "It's okay for me," said Yun Peng, who was born in China but plays for the United States.

"Before I wore shorts, but now I wear a skirt. There's not much difference, but I think skirts are good for the sport because girls look nicer, a bit like they do in tennis."

Renuga Veeran, who plays for Australia, had split feelings. "I think it's a good rule because all the players will look standardised, though I know a lot of girls are really comfortable in shorts.

"I don't think they (BWF) can just make a rule saying everyone has to wear a skirt because that could affect some people's performance. For me, I always wear a skirt and I'm good with it.

"But some people say it's sexist."

Her doubles partner and brother, Raj, suspected the whole controversy may be a ploy. "Publicity-wise it's been quite big. It might even be a publicity stunt," he said.

Maybe the next ruling will be that the ladies are not allowed to wear anything under their skirts? That will surely attract lots of men to watch them play.

Mr. Paisan, why don't you suggest women players to just wear bikini... definitely BWF will get more sponsorship, especially from bra and panties companies. And we start with your wife first... or your daughter also can be the model.

This is not a swimming tournament! Why don't you tell the women players to put on their birthday suit? That will be nice and I am sure the whole world will be watching.
        Please talk some sense!

      bwf otak blue.
Kalau macam tu, laki pulak tak payah pakai t-shirt. Lagi ramai popuan nak tengok, kan? The way these people play also depends on the way they dress. It's stupid!
Why not make all the women in Malaysia wear skirts, then? I bet more tourists would come!

erm...nape emosional ngat nie cik adik....pd pendapat i..aper pakaian pun yg dipakai oleh atlit wanita adalah mengikut kesesuaian mereka, setakat nie yg pakai skirt tu pemain badminton dr China n India rite, so rasa nyer tak jd isu besar sangat, kecuali lah ader pemain badminton melayu/Islam dr Malaysia yg pakai skirt singkat sehingga 'membuka mata' sesetengah 'pihak'.

Skirts or Shorts who cares..i just want to see the game!! But let the athletes wear what they like and comfortable with because if its not comfortable for them it will just disturb them habang naglalaro sila.
Ako naman mahilig talaga sa skirts pag nag lakwatsa pero sa sports i like to wear shorts...Kayo ba mga kabayan kong mga babae anong mas gusto nyo, kayo namang mga lalaki ano naman ang type nyo na isoot ng mga babae while naglalaro ng sports???

female athletes should be given the freedom to wear uniforms which they are most comfortable at, because it will boost their athleticism. otherwise, it's just a gender bias, and bigotry.

what if one of them want to wear a bikini only? would you allow it to be shown on tv???
      • yellow tulips 1 year 0 months ago
i don't think no one will dare to wear bikini. Two days ago, we watch Roland Garros live, no one even noticed what they are wearin. Etiquettes don't need to be spoken outloud, it's common sense.
      • Callia Altero 11 months ago
@Angry Bird: Would the committee let them play or be shown on TV? And what do you mean by bikini, just underpants or a pair, like a swim suit bikini?

    • Rama  •  11 months ago
It doesn't matter what the girls wear as long as they play well and bring fame to the country they represent ! WBF, please let them to be at ease ! DO NOT tie them with this new ruling !

Are you sure it was not a filipino who suggested this sexist move. As a foreigner in the Philippines I often wondered why very few women (at least here in Mindanao) wore skirts or dresses. A filipina told me it was because whenever a woman wore a skirt or dress here, especially on the elevator in the mall or getting on a jeepney, the filipino men would try and look up hoping to see their knickers. That's why my partner always wears shorts under her dress, when she wears one. Most filipinas find it less intimidating wearing jeans.

how about Serena Williams, she has some pretty spicy outfits and that is professional tennis, does it stop her or the fans from enjoying the sport ?
    • Nusaibah  •  11 months ago
How about men players wear skirts? Sure it can attract more people to watch........

I dont see any problem with women wearing miniskirts at games. In fact, in popular sports like tennis, women players are already doing this.

What is wrong I think is forcing players to wear such outfit. If they want to wear it, fine. if they want to wear a more conservative outfit like shorts then let them do it.

Advertisements have nothing to do with it. I think some sexually-deprived pervs influencing China's corrupt system on everything are more interested with their imaginations that with the sports itself.

Ironic our BAM doesn't make any argument over this matter... Looking in one's perspective, I think this is one of the way that they want Muslim players out from sports. No one likes the idea, man. BAM, show some resistance, will ya?

      Dear Global Friends,

Fashion show or sports ?? Officials are in confusion. The general public are not.
This is a sport of skills and talents not a fashion show or for commercial greed or
      for personal profits.

What's wrong with the current sports-wear. Do they look ugly, indecent or unprofitable ?.

The officials have nothing to do but in changing points ruling, and now fashion

So it is high time to CHANGE those officials who have no moral values to accept the
decisions of the right moral people, who need to have good skillful players not fashion designers.

They are the selfish and egoistic ones who stick to their power of authorisation.

Let them wear the skirts as what they decide for the spectators to witness

Ruling that players should appear in badminton matches in skimpy outfit seems like a classic move of trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. If this is indeed what they intend to accomplish i.e optimum comfortability for the players while ensuring maximum publicity for the sport then they should require players to play totally naked, or at least naked from the waist down, that should guarantee to accomplish both. This way they can stop worrying about promotional publicities while ensuring the players can now move unencumbered in court, adding to the general aerodynamic fluidity by reducing drag caused by clothes;-)

let the female players decide on their own. skirt or short who cares? as long as they are comfortable on what they are wearing that's it! after all, its not a battle of attire but skills...
