Pitong Pinoy: Recognizing 7 modern-day Filipino heroes

Inspiring is an understatement when it comes to the example of seven modern-day Filipino heroes who were recognized in the Pitong Pinoy initiative of Yahoo! Philippines.

Alexis Belonio. Jean Enriquez. Jay Jaboneta. Tomas Leonor. Anna Oposa. Tzarina Saniel. Heidi Mendoza. Seven modern-day heroes chosen by the Filipino online community when Yahoo! Philippines issued a call for nominees. Seven great examples for the Filipino youth.

As you might expect, social media was very much a part of the Pitong Pinoy project, and you can see the online community's Twitter coverage of the awards via the hashtag #PitongPinoy.

For photos of the event, you may check out this Flickr set from James Sarmiento.

Here's blogger King del Rosario sharing his thoughts on the Pitong Pinoy awards, and a GMANews.TV article on awardee Belonio's mission to "power the country -- with rice husks." You may also check out this blog post by Jane Uymatiao.

Awardees Oposa and Jaboneta also blogged about the event, while the Philippine Information Agency also came out with this article.

Here are video clips from Yahoo! Philippines on each modern-day hero.
