Online Family Safety: Child Protection Tools (Windows Parental Control)

    AP Photo

Part 6 of a series (Click to read Part 5.)

Parental guidance notices or advisories are commonly affixed on TV shows or movies to remind parents to guide their young on what they see and hear.

But this is not the case when it comes to accessing Internet. Without proper intervention, parents and kids are not warned of the sites they are about browse. As a precautionary measure, parents should use the built-in and third-party online tools to regulate time of computer use, access to Internet and gaming sites.

In the next few articles, we will be discussing built in parental control and other online tools. In this post, we will discuss how parents can do that for computers using Windows Vista and Windows 7 OS.

Launch the Start menu, look for the Search box and type "Parental Controls" to open the control panel.

    •    Choose the user to configure the parental controls. (Enter your password for your administrator if prompted, if you are not logged as the administrator.)
    •    Below Parental Controls header select "On" to turn on the restrictions.
    •    Select time limits to configure the allowable days and times, Click "OK" to save the setting. (Note: The blue box means the user will be unable to use the computer on selected days and times, while the white box means the computer remains accessible.)
    •    Press "Games" to select the maximum allowable game rating, Click "OK" to save the settings.
    •    Customize each "user name" to specific programs to "Allow and Block" by placing a corresponding checks inside the box for each program you will allow the user to access. Don't forget to save the application limitations.

Configuring and customizing the parental control of your computer  is a simple way to prevent children from accessing information that can harm their young minds. Parents could also sift and filter internet access through controlling and setting the web filter provided by "Windows Live Family Safety" available to all Windows operating systems. This will restrict and block the children to visit illicit websites by monitoring it depending on how you have selected your setting.

How do you feel about this article?

      tapos.
      • Jef Menguin 8 months ago
You do not have to be techy. Tinuturuan ka na dito eh.
    • Ms. Loveless  •  8 months ago
I think this is not applicable in the Philippine setting. Most of the Filipino parents are not techie compared to US. Filipino children are far more knowledgeable than their parents in computer stuffs. Worst is, children teach their parents how to use computer. LOL

Kaya ka nga po tinuturuan eh. Hindi naman mababago yung password mo kahit techy sya.

You should have explained how to use that. It sounds like selling to me. Educate us instead.

For Filipino household parents, it is better if a wife and a husband is the only person to access the internet. Since youngsters don't have sound judgment between right and wrong, a parent should act and teach children at any age with good moral values, bible principles, and knowledgeable books such as: Dictionary; Encyclopedia; History; especially the Bible who was created by the most credible and reliable author - God. Instill in their minds with all positive aspect of vying for wickedness and infuse their soul with godly manner and AAA+-based-conscience.

A PARENT CAN NEVER GUARD HIS CHILD 24 HOURS A DAY!!!
THUS, IT IS BEST TO INCULCATE IN HIM MORAL VALUES BASED ON GOD'S MORALITY!!
      proverbs 22:6 says:
''TRAIN UP A BOY ACCORDING TO THE WAY FOR HIM, EVEN WHEN HE GROWS OLD HE WILL NOT TURN ASIDE FROM IT."
      • Zero Cool 8 months ago
        well said..two thumbs up
      • Jef Menguin 8 months ago
True, you cannot guard your child 24 hours a day. But you can always make restrictions in his use of computer as you make restrictions as to what time he must go home at night or where or when he can live your house. The advice here is not a replacement to disciplining your child. Instead, you are given a tip on how to make sure that he will not be going to some sites he is not yet ready to explore.

Bullshit. It's like banning kids to learn how to use a gun or how it feels like to use one and ask them if it feels safe to hold one or not.

DPAT IDISABLE ANG PORN SITES AT PICS NA BOLD, PATI NA DIN HALIMBAWA PAG MISS UNIVERSE O MISS WORLD NA, KUNG MAY KASAMA KAYONG MGA BATA. PAG SA PC KAYO NANONOOD NUN AY MANGINGITIM UNG KUNG SAAN NAKASUOT UNG BRA AT PANTY. BLURED BA UN HEHEHE
    • Alejandro  •  8 months ago
For me its best if you focus more to teach good values and educate your children mentally and morally...no matter what the world or how the internet influence there ,they can still survive and choose the right path..you cant close the eyes of your children as they grow up..the best thing is they were raise in strong belief in morality and a have a respect in everyhing specially there self.....minsan sa mga bahay parents pa ang nag mo molest at nag aabuse sexually ng kanilang anak...so its not safe anywhere even in everybody's home..

While I agree with you that forbidding makes them crave for more and that being over protective isn't good at all, Sorry but I have to disagree with your last sentence. Boys don't turn out gays because they were forbidden to access violent or illicit websites, and too safe to try the dangerous stuffs. Soon you will be a parent, you'll understand and realise the complexity of raising a child...and also, gay or straight your son turns out to be, you will never love him less.
    • Edgar  •  8 months ago
but more kids are more techi than parents, especially they can even read this kind of article, and we can not do this to every computer they are using, anyway nice try, just discipline our kids and make sure to spend quality time with them

First time ko nakapanood ng scandal,

      nung college na ako.

      ANG BORING!!!! Engganyo raw pffffftttt.....
    • ◕ ‿‿ ◕  •  8 months ago
The more you forbid, the more they crave.

I don't think that being too protective will raise a good child. I have a cousin and my overprotective aunt forbids him from doing alot of things. Now the only thing he knows about a computer is accessing facebook and would call me up whenever there is PC trouble, which when I was his age was able to solve even without my parents help.

Also there's a problem of him turning gay. Admit it, most of boys stuff are dangerous.

      Let's face it.

Sooner or later, malalaman rin ng mga bata ang kalaswaan ng internet.

Nabubuhay tayo ngayon sa mundong puno ng kalaswaan. Our days of purity and innocence is over especially dito sa bansa nating tinaguriang "the Christian nation in Asia.

Best of all, teach them how to be a person with honor and dignity and how these taboos will bring dishonor and shame like how the Japanese have taught their children.

Tignan niyo kung anong klase silang tao ngayon. with HONOR and DIGNITY.
