In our last post, we started discussing about child protection tools for your kids safety online. Since majority of PCs here in the Philippines have Windows as OS, we shared how you can manipulate and use the built-in parental control of Windows.

On this post, however, we'll discuss the similar feature of a Macintosh computer.  In some ways the OS are different, but the objective behind parental control is the same- regulate the time being spent on computer and restrict access to certain programs/applications or Internet sites.

You can customize Mac Parental Control is just nine steps:

    1. To be able to do this, make sure you have the administrator privileges.

    2. Log on to your computer.

    3. Click the apple icon on the upper left corner and click "System Preferences."

    4. Click accounts icon under "system" and create an account for your kids.

    5. Turn on the "Manage parental control" from the New Accounts tab, then input the information needed.

    6. After pressing OK it will take you to your kids account panel, click the open parental button.

    7. From there you can configure the following:

    a. Applications - You can choose the programs your kids are allowed to use.
    b. Web activity - You can indicate the sites that they can visit
    c. People - You can limit email or chat exchanges to pre-determined people
    d. Time - You can set time limits.
    e. Others - You can regulate a lot more: logs, CD burning, printer use, and images/languages.

Note: Look on the menu, on the left side of the window select the account of which you want to add parental controls

    8.    Do steps 3 to 7 for every new account you create.

    9.    After you have done these, click on the padlock button on the lower left corner so nobody can make changes to the settings you just made, except you of course.
By using the parental control feature of your device, as parent, you have the assurance that though you are not around, there is a level of protection for your kids online safety.
