Waiting for your plane? Some airports are offering free iPads to pass the time

You don't get to keep them when you're done, but it's still a welcome way to pass the time

Stuck waiting in an airport terminal thanks to a flight delay? We've all been there. Airport restaurant operator OTG wants you to spend that time buying waiting over-priced hamburgers and $10 beers, and they've got a new tool to lure you in: The Apple iPad.

Thousands of the tablets are being deployed to airport restaurants around the country. The iPads are there mainly to help assist you with your food order, where you can effortlessly swipe through picture menus and request food directly from the device. Once you're done placing your order, you can use the iPad to check email, post to Facebook, surf the web, and even play selected games. Just be careful not to use it to criticize your service via Twitter — restaurants have kicked people out for that in the past.

Restaurants using iPads to take customers' orders seems to be a growing trend — even trendy De Santo's Italian Restaurant in New York City offers patrons iPads to serve as menus. And when those iPads come pre-equipped with an inexpensive Square payment device, not only can you order your food without having to wait for your server, but you can pay and leave without having to wait as well.
