    Aquino’s Corona obsession

    Aquino's Corona obsession

Editorial cartoon by VINCENT GO, VERA Files

The impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona has entered its fifth week, with President Benigno Aquino III saying there will be no let up in his crusade against the country's top magistrate.

To be sure, running after crooks in government and putting them away where they could do no further harm is a task citizens would expect of a just and responsible government. When that government targets the big fish, it deserves public support.

But the Aquino government has been after Corona (and the person who appointed him, former president Gloria Arroyo) with apparent single-minded obsession, that some sectors have accused the President of neglecting other equally important duties.

Last Feb. 14, farmers affiliated with Task Force Mapalad snuck into Malacanang to get the President to pay them some attention. The farmers are concerned that the agrarian reform program will lapse in 2014, its mandated deadline, with government unable to complete implementation. Aquino's performance has been dismal, the farmers say, and there's still much to do to ensure that the landless get their land.

And then there's the corruption elsewhere in government. Recently the Department of Finance filed charges against a clerk of the Bureau of Customs found to be in possession of a Porsche and two houses, which he did not declare in his Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth. No doubt Corona's impeachment trial has made agencies of government more aware of SALN-related issues, and this would have been a good time to do a bureaucracy-wide lifestyle check. Unfortunately, there's really no systematic or concerted anti-corruption campaign, outside Corona and that clerk.

There are other pressing issues that urgently call for government action. Disasters marked the end of 2011 and start of 2012—Sendong struck in northern Mindanao while an earthquake levelled towns and killed scores in Negros Oriental—and the threat of more such tragedies are forever on people's minds. A national disaster risk reduction strategy needs to be devised and implemented to brace the country for such calamities.

In Mindanao, business people are sounding the alarm that a power crisis could cripple industry and the economy, and energy officials have admitted there really is a shortage looming, if not already upon Mindanao. And then there are the perennial problem areas—housing, unemployment, poverty, education—for which the Aquino government has yet to formulate a vision.

And so while Filipinos will perhaps never begrudge Noynoy Aquino his anti-Corona crusade, they do also expect him to fix the country's countless other problems with as much zeal and determination. If he does so, he would no doubt put himself on higher moral ground. - Luz Rimban

Well nung nagkabagyo sa south at maraming namatay, parang walang nangyari, walang national address o speech which is his responsibility. Thats true obsession.

"DO NOT FIND FAULT! FIND SOLUTION!"

        Joey,
The impeachment is not about find fault. Its about finding solution to our problem and that is corruption.
Pag me corruption mayaman lang ang me right. Di yun pwde
      • Joey 2 months ago
Tama ka diyan, at sumasang-ayon po ako. Pero, sorry to say, but i`m not pertaining about the the impeachment.

In a very simple equation AQUINO = (CORONA + ARROYO) / ATTENTION TO DUTIES X CELEBRITY STATURE = 0 JOBS, 0 INVESTMENTS, 0 PROJECTS. This is probably the most nonsensical presidential term I would ever experience in my lifetime. I hope my grand kids won't have to hear about this president, nakakahiya.

If the president wants to have a corruption free country, then he should replace everyone in the government. Too many people are starving and jobless. So i guess, he needs to keep his mouth shut and base his priorities sa mga nangangailangang tao sa Pilipinas. This is so disappointing.

I think President Aquino should seek a psychiatrist. His obsession for Arroyo and Corona to the point of neglecting the issues of the country which are far more important like poverty, crime, etc. might be a manifestation of a mental delineation.

Aquino is a weak president. I feel shame that I did support him. He seems to focus on GMA and her people and very little else. He is very good at ignoring issues that concern so many people in the Philippines by trying to appear busy with his little witch hunt. If his true intentions are to rid the country of corruption, this is what he should do. No playing favorites. Make every government employee undergo an audit. (there are provisions within the law for doing this). It would be a major undertaking, but it could be done. Patrol the police with undercover government agents to stop the horrible practice of stopping motorists and collecting fines only to pocket the money. Once a process has begun in the judicial branch of the government, let them do their job. They do not need a cheerleader. This is not the job of the president. They too, would have to undergo the same scrutiny as every other government employee. This should happen as a blitz, not at the pace of a snail crawling. Shake them up. Tell them that the party is over. Be a leader, who's mission shows no bias for any person or group. Send a message to the people that you mean business. The hardest part is the catch 22 in doing this. That is that you have corrupted people being instucted to stop corruption. Before you can stop corruption, you must pay fairly to the people with jobs, and remove their excuse of saying there was no other way to feed their families. (this would apply mostly to police) They must earn enough to support themselves. These are the things a president should be busy doing. He should be too busy to find time for parties and meeting with actors. Aquino is abusing his status as president only to satisfy his ego. Does he really want his legacy to read "he sure got Gloria good" ??? I do not think he would have been elected if the people knew then what they know now. I wish there were a way to have him interviewed by a person like Piers Morgan from CNN. He would crumble under such pressure. Somehow Aquino needs to figure out that the Philippines is all about the ordinary people who live and have families here, and not all about himself. In case I have missed something, I would welcome any replies that can tell me of any great accomplishments made by Aquino since his election to the presidency. peace

im nothng against our Pres.. but to be honest, since he seated in the position, no remarkable projects..most of the news about him are about his lovelife, his lifestyle, his fight for the corrupts... what about new things for the country?..Ok let's consider that Arroyo & Corona found guilty..what can we get from it? can it resolve our fellowmen's poverty? can it make our economy better?

YES! this government spearheaded by no LESS than Benigno Simeon Aquino III is truly going nowhere...And now this conceited president has plan to change/remove the name of Diosdado Macapagal from the Clark International Airport..this is again a part of his revengeful activity..whatever they say that this is a marketing strategy..this is a bullshit reason...HE IS TRULY conceited, and if he wanted to remove or erase the name of the former president Macapagal from those landmarks/airports then his parents have also no rights for any places/destination here in our land..what does he think...HE AND HIS FAMILY were the only great people in this land. HOW CONCEITED!

this is more than a nightmare. Filipino voted a President to go after his family perpetrators. President, STOP telling the media that the Filipino People are the one asking for all of this REVENGE. The Filipino people simply wants to stop POVERTY!

Not that I'm on CJ Corona's side, but I think it's very unfair that he's already being judged by the people from what they see and hear in the media. What's more shameful is that the president himself is the one leading the charge on crucifying CJ Corona in the public trial with his rants during his speeches even though the impeachment trial is still going on. This only shows how little respect the president has for the impeachment trial. How can people respect the impeachment trial if the president himself doesn't?

Always pogi points.... Promises were broken that is why he keep himself clean in front of Filipino people. Then what is happening right now? Buti pa c gloria before nakatanggap kami ng performance bonus LAHAT ng govt officials and now???? Just because the SC grant the land to farmers so now He is trying to to be arrogant by not listening to SC decision. If gusto nia ng respeto he should respect our LAW to0.. Shame on us nagiging Banana Republic na tayo.. Kakahiya...

THE REAL PURPOSE OF PNOY'S PRESIDENCY IS NOT TO CHAMPION OUR NATION'S CAUSE, BUT TO PROTECT HIS FAMILY'S INTEREST; IT'S NOT TO CURB CORRUPTION BUT TO CAST REVENGE ON THOSE PUBLIC OFFICIALS WHO RUN AFTER HIS FAMILY.

THE REAL REASON WHY HE WANTED CJ CORONA IMPEACHED IS NOT BECAUSE OF ALLEGED FAVORABLE DECISIONS FOR GMA BUT ON DECISIONS UNFAVORABLE TO HIS FAMILY (one of which is the Hacienda Luisita case). Just think of it, impeachment was never an option before the hacienda luisita case was promulgated. The impeachment hysteria all happened just days after said case was released on media. If CJ Corona is out, PNoy appointee is in! And when PNoy appointee is in, in na rin ang mga desisyong papabor sa mga Cojuanco-Aquino. Prepare for the reversal of the hacienda luisita case either on the ground of technicality or substantive defects.
