This week, the world's top franchise leaders will be in Manila as the Philippines hosts Franchise Asia 2011, the biggest franchise show in Asia.

Supported by the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA), the six-day business event at the SMX Convention Center is expected to bring in franchising experts from China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S.

They will join Philippine business leaders Tony Tan Caktiong of Jollibee, Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp. SVP and President-International Jeff Welch; 7-Eleven International Vice President, Chris Tanco; and  Mang Inasal founder and vice chairman Edgar "Injap" Sia II.

Samie Lim, Chairman of the World Franchise Council (WFC), said the event will "strengthen the country's position as the 'Franchise Hub of Asia,' while also bringing homegrown brands over to the global stage." "We believe that the Philippines, being in the center of Asia, will be Asia's franchise hub.  We have the biggest number of executives in franchising, the Philippines has almost a hundred million people, this is where foreigners can start to test out franchises.  Our time has come."

He adds that Filipinos possess many traits for success in franchising.  "The ability to speak English is one.  It's so easy to send Filipinos anywhere in the world and they can be the branch manager and so on and so forth.  Number two, the fact that we have so many young people.  I always believe there are so many Filipinos going abroad because we are basically a very global nation.  So that anywhere we go, we feel at home, while others are disoriented.  The Filipinos can go anywhere."

Five hundred brands are set to exhibit in the venue, while other highlights include the International Franchise Expo, a one-stop-shop of local and international investment opportunities; Franchise Seminars that will match franchisors and would-be franchisees, and the International Franchise Conference featuring the latest trends and developments in franchising.

    Franchising in the Philippines

Franchising has been acknowledged as the fastest growing sector in the Philippines, with more than 124,000 franchisees offering the products and services of over 1,100 franchisors in the country.

Worldwide, it generated more than one million jobs and recorded a total output of $9.45 billion in 2010.

Mr. Lim believes holding Franchise Asia will generate billions in new investments. "Based on my figures, there will be P50 billion of new investments in franchises, and the business generated by Franchise Asia is going to increase the sales of franchising by P200 billion in the next three years.  We expect that through franchising, 125,000 new jobs [will be created] within the next 3 years."

PFA Chairman Robert Trota sees the sector growing from 20 to 30% in the next two years based on the international brands expected to set up shop in the Philippines later this year.

He believes the boom is the result of a number of factors including the emergence of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs); the growth and expansion of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry; the business-oriented mindset of OFWs and their families; and the introduction of homegrown business concepts.

With the theme, "Asia to the World, The World to Asia," Franchise Asia 2011 will serve the country well, said Trota. "It puts the Philippines on the global spotlight as a leading trade and tourism destination, where the biggest and most successful food, retail and service franchise concepts thrive.  This is the right time for the country to shine and show its glory."

"It puts the Philippines on the global spotlight as a leading trade and tourism destination" official should also focus on the problem in terrorist, if they able to solve the terrorist then investment and tourism will grow in full rate and speed.

Good news po yan sa ating bayan, Philippines is called to be the Asia's franchise hub....Name those Filipino brands like Jolibee, Mang Inasal at marami pang iba....

Its time to bring and show to the world what Filipinos have..Filipinos are known to be one of the best franchiees and franchisors...No one could beat a good franchise like Jolibee....Dapat hindi lang sa pagkain dapat pati rin sa mga damit...Pag nasa middle east east ka, pagnagdamit ng maayos ang Pinoy,, tatanungin saan mo nabili ung damit mo, samahan mo nmn ako, gusto ko din bumili...Wow, kung pinoy brand lang sana, taas noo pa akong magrecommend....SAna masilip nio ang mga clohting industry sa bansa para palaguin....MAayos manamit at magpauso ang mga1o to 15 Million Filipinos abroad.....

Ang mga kinakain ng Pinoy, sinusuot nyang brands, hindi namamatay kc maayos ang mga Pinoy....Sana isa sa franchising ang parran para mababago ang buhay ng mga Pilipino abroad...OFW from being a household worker/housemaids, later OFW became professional workers, I also dreamed Filipinos that are to be send abroad will become like managers/executives, business partners, and businessman....SA ganyang paraan, sana magkaroon ng lot lot of choice for Filipinos whom what he wants to become as time and years is passing by....he could become a farmers, banke workers, nurses, accountants, government employees, pilots, railway and train technicians and engineers, teachers, medical workers, doctors/dentist and what else a Filipino could become and can offer the world.....

Bring the dollar at home in Phil, paano kaya!!!!....

If only those cooperative groups venture in big franchise businesses the like of Jollibee, Chowking, Mang Inasan and the likes and offer shares to their members mas-madami ang makaka-avail at siguradong tatangkilik nito.

Indeed it is! Real estate (and soon tourism) are not that far behind. Don't believe some of the bad publicity that you read off from Yahoo News. I have two real estate ventures about to be delivered before the year ends. And things are looking very positive in terms of rentals -- a very welcome additional source of income! I must say!

This is really good news. I believe if the government manages to extinguish the terrorism in this country then this might be the chance for our country to be alleviated from poverty. I still wonder though what about the local ones.

It's a good news for us filipinos but in order for this things to materialize and become successful the gov't should not forget to priorities neutralizing those terrorist specially in the Mindanao region and get rid of corruption in the country so the world will change their perception about the Philippines as a safe place for them to invest their money and more job for us pinoys.

I have wondered if fast food franchise restaurants in the United States like Captain D's and Long John Silver's would work in the Philippine Islands, but a Filipino start up competing as well as competing with a popular long-line two-hour waiting just to get a table such as Red Lobster in America.

I am sure there are seafood restaurants started by Filipinos in the metropolises, but I was more interested in wondering of having the success of Jollibee or Chowking, but a seafood restaurant. Filipinos eat fish at home more than beef hamburgers.

Availability of raw materials such as beef to supply a burger joint is why franchising in America took off. It was too difficult for independent small business owners to expand on simply buying from wholesalers or the neighborhood grocery store to keep prices low. The need created small manufacturing industries of jobs like a cheese factory just to supply McDonald’s with slices for the cheese in their cheeseburgers.

We have the seafood supply and we can easily start raising the Cod Fish for fillets like those sold in Long John Silvers.

This is indeed good news for those people who can afford to franchise.
The bad news is that franchised stores will slowly kill the small business entities like the kainan sa mga kanto , street vendors selling various foods.

This scheme will also increase tax revenues. I do hope that taxes will be put to good use.
I do favor franchising because that will regulate the operation of a clean and decent business ( esp food businesses).

Franchisers must study on how to lower franchising cost so that those with small capital can afford the business being offered.
