How Pinoys can help fight climate change

PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA— Minimizing power consumption at home by just 10 percent is already a big deal when it comes to fighting the effects of climate change.

This is just one of the many ways Filipinos can do to help the environment. They can also join the symbolic 60-minute lights off during Earth Hour on March 26, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

"The Earth Hour is meant to symbolize and increase awareness about the importance of personal action to help mitigate the effects of climate change. For this year's celebration, we urge 95 million Filipinos to take this personal commitment for the Earth," said WWF Philippines chief executive Lory Tan.

The carbon footprint of the Philippines is equal to 0.8 metric tons per capita or 0.3 of one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to WWF.

While the Philippines is one of the countries with low carbon emissions in Asia, Tan stressed that every little act to decreasing energy consumption is very important.

He stressed that the country is at risk to 20 typhoons and over 20 earthquake events in a year, with effects set to escalate as climate change continues.

"Climate change is a global problem that needs mitigation, everyone has a role to play, it's not just the government or NGO sector's job, it's imperative on all of us to do our part," said Tan.

Aside from reducing energy at home and office use by ten percent, individuals can walk or carpool, and buy local instead of imported goods. (Check the WWF-Philippines website for more steps on how to reduce your carbon footprint.)

Tan also recommended the forging of public-private partnerships for investments in green renewable energy sources to reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels for energy.

At least half of the country's carbon emissions are from the energy sector including transportation, manufacturing and buildings powered by electricity, and the other half includes agriculture and construction industries, said lawyer Gia Ibay, national director for Earth Hour 2011.

"If we can do the lights off for an hour, imagine what we can do to reduce our footprint if we make it a habit to walk and conserve water, for example," said Ibay.

WWF urges home owners associations and barangays to hold their own Earth Hour activity. People are also encouraged to send photos and videos to kkp@wwf.org.ph for documentation.

This year's Earth Hour main event is set to happen at the SM Mall of Asia on March 26 from 830pm to 930p.m. The Philippines is among 128 countries joining this event, which started in 2007.

The best solution is to regulate if not totally eliminate the root cause of the problem of climate change. Here are the tips:

      1. Cancel franchise of those transportation companies whose buses are emitting large amount of smoke that are found to have failed an independent testing company.
      2. Cancel the license of those Smoke Emission Testing Lab who issued passing emission test to vehicles found to have failed by an independent testing lab.
      3. Give incentive to an independent testing company who caught fraud in the testing certificates.
      4. Immediately padlock companies and manufacturing plants that failed to conform to standards on smoke emissions.
      5. Fire and sue DENR people found to be in cahoots with companies who issued complying certificates to companies that failed the emission test of an independent testing company.
      6. Total ban on manufacture and use of CFCs in all forms and enact stiff penalties and long term imprisonment to violators.
      7. Promote and make available use of green ener---- like solar, wind, water and thermal ener----.
      8. Stiffer penalties or imprisonment to litterers especially of plastics and non-biodegradable wastes
      9. Hefty fines and Imprisonment to all found in cahoots with illegal loggers.
      10. Incentives to inventors who can make machines out of green ener---- sources

Perfect suggestions.... I wonder how we can cope up with all that solutions. I think It's very complicated!

I don't know how you come up with that. Sounds good to me.

This is ironic that most industrialized nations wanted the poor nations to exert more efforts to mitigate climate change while they were the ones wantonly neglecting it. Frankly speaking, why continue making machines and building plants that burn fossil fuels if those were the cause of it. Why not invent or do something out of green ener---- sources like wind, solar, and thermal ener---- rather than continued use of fossil fuel or coal. Nuclear plants were more harmful than any other sources of ener----. Greed of power, money and recognition would fail this crusade against climate change. Neglect of one cannot save the whole.

Yeah I agree, most of the rich countries, they dumped their garbage in the ocean, they are the most responsible for the destruction of our mother earth, nuclear waste, production waste, polluting air etc... pero di naman masama na kahit di na malabanan ang pagkasira ng kalikasan, at least may mga taong gumagawa ng paraan upang mabawasan ito... masakit man isipin talagang nakakatakot na ang nan----ayari sa mundo, sobrang init na ng core natin dahil sa greenhouse effect, kaya ang mga lindol ay sobrang lalakas na, nagkakaroon pa ng solar flare last year... hope the govt try to start the implementation of no plastic policy, just like the ordinance of city of muntinlupa, possible and useful naman pala ang paggamit ng mga basket, net bag, paper bag sa pamamalengke at sa mga mall.. sana gayahin ng mga ibang lungsod sa metro manila ang naisip at nasimulan ng lungsod ng muntinlupa, kahit sa elementarya alam ang biodegradable at non biodegradable, if we manage to minimize the non biogredable garbage, makakatulong ito sa pagkontrol ng basura...

I don't really know if it's fair enough to 3rd world countries to somehow be pushed by industrialized nations to cut carbon emissions and if the effort of this 1st world countries are enough to be a model of a green nation. All I know is almost all poor nations starting to have a good economy are heading towards the "American dream" or American lifestyle. I mean we should know that emerging economies follows the steps of 1st world countries even if it would mean compromising the environment. Maybe that's why industrialized countries are pushing poor nations to be aware and do something so they'll take a different path of economic success.

PLANT TREES AS MANY AS WE CAN, this is a little thing that we can do to help our mother nature. as of this moment we experienced the global warming, so, its time to be more responsible to our environment. please teach also the children to be responsible enough in their surroundings, teach them not to throw their trash anywhere, do not burn the garbage instead segregate it and recycle or re-use it in anyway. i want my children to see how beautiful our nature is. love the environment as we love ourself. alagaan po natin ang mundo na ipinahiram sa atin ng Diyos, huwag natin hayaan n masira ito dahil sa ating mga kapalaluan. MAY GOD BLESS US ALL!

I agree 100%, lets plan more tree, Lets bring back the green revolution. Schools, Churches, baranggay, and even in our backyard. Magtanim po tayo, ito na lang po ang isang paraan na dagdag tulong para maisalba pa natin kahit papaano ang ating mundo. Wala na po tayong mundo pang malilipatan.

Hey...environmental problems is not just the responsibility of the government, it should be everybody's concern. I hope that the earth day will not just a one day event but rather a lifetime commitment. It is our responsibility to take good care of our resources even in a our small ways...by not just throwing garbage evrywhere, planting some trees in our backyard, switching off everythng that we are not using, and not burning any plastics are the few small things that we can contribute to our society. By then, we can somehow avoid those floods that ruin our cities and the greenhouse effect that causes imbalance in the atmosphere.

        We are using concrete now.

But we might still be forced to cut trees so that we can build our houses in it's place. Specially since our population is growing pretty fast. We are gonna need more land for housing soon. Also means more power will be needed. I wonder if we are still gonna have enough land to construct those clean ener---- producing plants. They also require a lot of space.

We are still doing the 120+ mins lights out here occupationally(The power company is still running short of power).

I think our country is the has the lowest emission because it cannot generate enough power.

Why do they keep referring to earth as mother. Is earth not like everything else inanimate. It really should be more like "sister earth", unless those who coined "Mother Earth" have a greater agenda. This most subtle mind conditioning has really fooled a lot of people.
How many more naive people will buy this "mother earth" crap. Wake up people before you start worshiping created things.

Indeed, something is wrong with connecting climate change to earthquakes. Something is wrong with the logic.

Prohibit Smoking coz the fact dat it really doesnt do anything good or help to our health. I think this country should not sell any cigarettes because its such a stupid waste. Hope our "Leaders" can see that not just money on their eyes....

i agree with Nane....dapat araw-araw may nanghuhuli ng mga smoke belchers sa iba't-ibang lugar ng maynila...at dapat yung mga nanghuhuli hindi nababayaran ng pera para siguradong mapaparusahan yang mga taong yan

government can do big things to combat climate change but simple citizen like us can do small things,....ika nga "Do not wait what the government can do for you but do what you can do for the government"......

The great thing about the filipinos is we are very resourceful we come up with genius way to recycle things so if we all work together we can actually cut our landfill in half
    • Michella  •  1 year 2 months ago
We shouldn't just be practicing the ritualistic Earth Hour. And yes it is a good cause but is it enough? We should, as one whole country or at least the whole world, should also be doing something good. Like planting trees in the parks and gardens, in this way, planting billions of trees may help to stop melting glaciers and icebergs.
    • --  •  1 year 2 months ago
I thought it would be a great idea to practice Earth Hour everyday. I'm kind of doing it at our own home and it's just a matter of getting used to it. Buy recycled products, used books, etc.
