    Pitong Pinoy Profiles: Heidi Mendoza

Heidi Mendoza is one of graft and corruption's biggest opponents.

However, one will be surprised to know that this whistleblower doesn't really want attention.

Mendoza first joined the Commission on Audit (COA) in March 16, 1984. She joined the agency because she has always wanted to serve the government. Back then, it wasn't easy for her, as her father wanted her to work in her province in Lucena. Still, Mendoza was determined to go to Manila and work for COA.

At that time, she started with an auditing team in COA. Then, she was assigned to the Performance Audit Office running through the accounts of various government agencies.

"We only fight corruption if it hits our interest. Some businesses would only want to talk about corruption when the economy is bad and it's hitting their business," she said.

Her biggest battle was when she exposed the corruption activities of some of the officers in the Armed Forces of the Philippines. A lot of Filipinos admired her courage for risking her life in order to tell the truth.

Now, Mendoza is back on the Commission on Audit as a commissioner. In spite of everything that happened, Mendoza said she is still very hopeful for the nation. She encourages other government officials to "go beyond what is expected" of them in the name of public service.

As for running for a Senate position this coming election, Mendoza has vetoed the idea. "I am not crafted for public attention," she said simply.

But with all the good things that she has done, she may have to get used to all the admiration.

Madam Heidi Mendoza, you should be considered as a National Hero and Treasure. Help our president to fight corruption from the whole government agencies. Nilalahat ko na dahil wala akong makita na government agency na walang magnanakaw mula rank & file hanggang Executive Director.

I'm sure that a huge part of COA auditors, employees and high officials are mad at you Madam, because they love corruptions. If auditors will not allow corruption, how do you think these crooked government employees/officials could steal anything from the government. Decades of corruptions in the government were allowed because COA allowed it. I'm glad to hear that there is one like you in that government agency. Mabuhay ka Madam Heidi Mendoza!

she needs to get the corpution and over pricing out of customs department. ALL FILIPINOS KNOW THAT THEY OVER CHARGE AND TAKE MONEY. I SAW IT 10 TIMES IN ONE DAY WHEN IN WAS THERE. THEY TAKE MONEY AWAY FROM HARD WORKING FILIPINOS. THEY LIKE TO BRAG THAT THE CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT IS THE 2ND LARGEST INCOME SOURCE FOR THE PHILIPPINES, THAT IS NOT SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT SINCE THAT IS MOSTLY FILIPINOS MONEY THAT THEY COULD BE PROVIDING FOR THERE FAMILIES AND LIVING IN HOUSES WITH ELECTRICITY AND RUNNING WATER AND FOOD ON THE TABLE EVERY DAY. THE DIRECTOR IN MANILA IS AN IDIOT.

I see lots of thumbs down - you are very sick people who obviously support corruption.

We definitely need a lot more public servants like Ms. Mendoza.

As long as there's evil, there's corruption. Fighting corruption is fighting evil itself. The greater hope against corruption is not for it to be fully eradicated but rather to be lessened to a point where our country could rise again from its state.
      • Tutubi or Not Tutubi 8 months ago
Heck, it's the huge sums of money plus the temptation from the devil is the very evil itself everyone had to fight. But one cannot achieve it without faith in God. Let's accept the truth that we're helpless against the devil and that the Christ Himself alone could eradicate evil for us.

If our dreams to a better government may seem like a folly, then I guess our faith for it should be greater for us, at least, to partially attain it. I'm basing these statements from someone who's already in the move against corruption in the country. Again, bravery is proven to be not just for men alone just like the women who fought for our country back in the days.

Job well done to Mrs. Heidi Mendoza for the bravery she had shown despite the troubles she had been through. I, on the other hand, am at your side, not your back. Being at your back is like saying fight for us and we'll rise you up when you fall, just fight for us! Which, in a sense, is similar to being used, that's why I personally would like to be by your side (but I don't know how) in a sense.

NAKAKAHIYA....
