Boy in Philippines shoots friend, self in mall

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A 13-year-old boy who shot his 16-year-old friend inside a busy Philippine mall then turned the weapon on himself died Wednesday and left the other boy brain dead, raising questions about gun control in a country awash in firearms.

Authorities were investigating how the 13-year-old obtained the .22-caliber pistol and smuggled it into the mall in Pampanga province's Mexico township, area police chief Wilson Santos said. He said the shooting Tuesday was a crime of passion and that the boys were in a romantic relationship after meeting through Facebook in May.

The young age of the victims has stunned a nation accustomed to violent crime — U.N. figures show that the Philippines ranked 10th worldwide in 2005 for homicides involving guns.

Santos said hospital authorities informed him that the younger boy died Wednesday afternoon, more than 24 hours after the shooting.

The older boy was brain dead and being kept alive by ventilators and medicine at a private hospital, Dr. Alfonso Danac said. His parents were still deciding whether to remove him from life support.

The 13-year-old, apparently in a fit of jealously, left a suicide note that he was "willing to die together with" his friend, Santos said.

The shooting was the second in about a week inside one of the country's biggest mall chains, SM malls, where guards are posted at entrances and bomb-sniffing dogs patrol the premises to deter crime and terrorist threats.

An estranged wife fatally shot her husband Sept. 14 and killed a security guard who tried to stop her from hurting herself in the parking area of a mall in a Manila suburb. She is facing murder charges.

After the latest attack, Rep. Mitos Magsaysay called for stricter enforcement of gun control laws, and urged parents, schools and communities to interact more with a generation of Filipino children weaned on cell phones and computers.

"What's alarming is that the gun was in the possession of a 13-year-old," Magsaysay said.

She said the gun owner, who has not yet been identified by police, would be criminally liable for allowing the boy to get hold of the weapon.

Unregistered guns account for nearly half the 2.3 million firearms in the country, fueling crime, election violence, terrorism and Muslim and communist insurgencies. About 98 percent of gun-related crimes from 2004 to 2008 were committed with unregistered firearms, police said last year.

I wonder if the parents of the 16 year old can sue SM for the death of their son -- mainly because it is from the lax security that the gun was not detected with the 13 yr old.

how thorough the inspection do u expect? maghuhubad ng damit?! scanning using the metal/gun detector is enough. hidden weapons cant be detected by mere visual inspection of bags coz hidden pockets can be somewhere.

in a "normal" set-up, there shouldn't be guards inside the mall to check our bags. sa pinas lang 'to and other third communities.

I think their purpose of being there is to deter.

Much like a security guard in a bank. Having a guard can discourage small time robbers, but when the elite robbers come, they should surrender their weapon and try not to be a hero as it will jeopardize the lives of the others inside the bank.

there are a lot of factors that can affect our young kids today. parents should not be totally blame for that. in the first place, no parents will want their children to go astray. as a parent i want what's best for my children and am working hard to give them the best things in life. i commit my life to them. the parents, teachers , the church, the media and the government should protect the young generations from all kinds of abuse and bad elements in our society. we should create a better place for our children to live and grow as human beings. what goes around comes around..

Absolutely right Gloria, well done you. Seems most people forget that this is a child who shot a child. The parents it would appear, failed miserably in the upbringing of this boy, no doubt too indulgent in their own-selves to give the attention and guidance a child needs. Let's also hope that the owner of the gun is given a good and harsh sentence equally befitting that of a murderer, which surely they must be equally as guilty as if they had pulled the trigger themselves

Sad to say crimes of passion has been part of human nature since recorded history, regardless of era, creed, sex, economic status or biological age. In Japan there are group suicide pacts of teenagers and young adults and even mix age groups because their favorite movie star died or they see no purpose in their life; In Korea, people when depressed by their daily lives usually takes a walk to the nearest bridge and jump into the river in order to drown; In Sydney Harbor alone, the Bay Police retrieves one body of a suspect suicide on average once every week and this in one of the worlds most establish welfare states! What we need here is to strengthen our traditional family values of talking with our children and love ones, cause psycho counseling is not enough. The love of family and friends and giving one's life a purpose and goal is also an important factor in helping deter suicides. Cause life is precious and you could only live once. Family and friendship may not always be the best answer their is to some, but it maybe the best alternative their is.

it is very alarming how kids these days are becoming very articulate with regards to their feelings, and parents do not have complete guidance over heir children.

Sana, this is a lesson for family to tighten their bonds, We can prevent this from happening if the family has an open relationship with one another. God bless na lang their soul.
