MANILA, Philippines - Iloilo City will formally welcome more than 5,000 student-athletes and officials when the 2012 National State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association Olympics finally come off the wraps today.
"Athletes from participating schools started arriving in Iloilo City since last week and we are working hard for the success of the 2012 National SCUAA Olympics," said Dr. Pablo E. Subong, president of the West Visayas State University and one of the three chairpersons of the host committee.
The other chairpersons are Dr. Benny Palma, president of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC), and Dr. Luis Sorolla, president of West Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST).
N.C.A. Derby
Another blockbuster derby fires off on Tuesday in the National Cockers Alliance (NCA) at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The event is hosted by Patrick "Idol" Antonio. Expected to field entries are NCA members Charlie "Atong" Ang, Gerry Ramos, Eddie Gonzales, Tommy Chua, Osang dela Cruz, Ellan Nagaño, Rene Medina, Bebot Uy, Jun Topacio, James Uy, Eugene Martin, Luding Boongaling, Manny Santos, Armand Santos, The Firefly Group, Ito Ynares, Nestor Mercado, Lito Orillaza, Joel Teves, Danny Teves, Mario Villamor, Ramon Mancenares, Rudy Albano, Jimmy Ang, Efren Canlas, Junjun Salazar, T. Sevilla, JR Tolentino, Eric dela Rosa, Butchoy Olaño, Gov. JJ Suarez, Boy Torres, George Torres, Claude Bautista and Boyet Joson.
Meanwhile, RVM Deni of Ramon Mancenares and IKA Sagupaan of Butchoy Olano and Alberto Cruz finished with similar 5 points to top last week's derby hosted by Manny and Arman Santos.
Boxing Show
A 4-round preliminary and a 6-round main event make up tonight's episode of Rod Nazario's In This Corner over NBN-4.
Mateo Handig Singwangcha goes up against Mabert Paulino in a super-flyweight match kicking off the 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. boxing show, presented by Ginebra San Miguel, San Miguel Beer, Purefoods, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), and Petron. And in the main match, Ranel Del Castillo slugs it out with Benjie Bartolome in a minimum weight bout.
Vis-Min Derby
Top gamefowl breeders from Visayas and Mindanao arrived in Manila yesterday to complete the cast of competitors in the "NFGB Super Big Event 6-Cock Derby -The President's Cup" on Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
All 32 member associations of National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders (NFGB) will have one entry each, according NFGB president Ricoy Palmares Jr. About 100 fights will be presented by sponsors B-Meg Derby Ace, Thunderbird, Ninja, Sagupaan, Supremo, Lakpue Drug Inc., Excellence Gamefowl Specialists, Belamyl, Salto Feeds and Airphil Express.
Al Garcia, the 2005 National Bakbakan champion, banners the Negros Occidental contingent along with Ramon Mancenares, Mayor Juancho Aguirre and Choy Ampil. Santi Siera will carry the colors of Negros Oriental while Mayor Jesry Palmares will represent the Panay Island.
From Mindanao are Paul Dominguez, Ben Tiu, South Cotabato Gov. Dodo Pingoy and Cano Daniel. Meanwhile, the NFGB Bullang-Bullang National 8-Bullstag Derby will start on April 11 at San Jose Mega Cockpit in Batangas.
Pasay Derby
The first ever "Sagupaan National 9-Cock Derby," a P15.1-million cockfighting series, will have another elimination round tomorrow at Pasay City Cockpit. To accommodate all cockers, the organizers have pegged the entry fee at only P9,900 and minimum bet of P5,500. Entries must be submitted on or before 9 p.m. today at PCC office.
Four participants topped the opening round last Monday with three wins each: Charlie Chan and Mayor Jesry Palmares (Mama Mia), Weng Emezon (J Brothers), Danny Valero (DV Spitfire Intrepid) and Teng Ranola (King Ejay Oragons).
