MANILA, Philippines - The Permanent Council of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) today affirmed it will not be holding anymore dialogues with the government, even in the near future, over the Reproductive Health Bill.
In a letter addressed to President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, CBCP President and Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar said the “action was taken after considering the prevailing circumstances where a healthy atmosphere for dialogue on the matter is wanting.”
The CBCP acknowledged, however, the past dialogues provided opportunities for “possible areas of collaboration.”
“However, the process has reached a point where we have to stand by the teachings and principles demanded us by our mission,” he added.
The CBCP decided to pull out of talks more than a week ago because of Aquino’s stance over the matter. The last straw, it said, was when he voiced his support for the controversial bill even at the risk of excommunication.
Members of Congress are now holding debates on the floor.
The 2 clashing parties have resorted to colorful words, even the use of personalities, to defend their respective causes.
