Cebu mayor charged over aide's death

CEBU CITY -- The Office of the Cebu Provincial Prosecutor recommended the filing in court of a criminal case against Medellin Mayor Ricardo Ramirez in connection with the death of his aide, Edelberto "Delbi" Abao, last year.

Instead of homicide, Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Joe Noel Lawas found probable cause to indict Ramirez for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, in violation of Article 365 of the Revised Penal Code.

Acting Provincial Prosecutor Joseph Berciles approved Lawas's resolution.

In a text message to Sun.Star Cebu, Ramirez said he has not yet received a copy of the prosecutor's resolution. He said he would inform his lawyer about the latest development of his case.

    Appeal

"I am thinking of requesting reinvestigation and appealing it to the Regional State Prosecutor or the DOJ (Department of Justice). I am not really that sure if that is the process because I am not a lawyer but one thing is for sure and it's that I am going to appeal it," said Ramirez.

Abao, a casual employee of the Medellin Municipal Government, suffered a gunshot wound in the right leg. He died at the Severo Verallo Memorial Hospital in Bogo City last Dec. 27.

Edelberto, 57, was the leader of the mayor's squad tasked to guard the town's public market.
