China calls for calm after Philippine offer to US

China on Sunday called for greater efforts towards "peace and stability" in the region, after the Philippines offered to allow more US troops on its territory.

Manila said Friday it planned to hold more joint exercises and to let more US troops rotate through the Southeast Asian country -- an offer welcomed by the United States as it seeks to expand its military power in Asia.

"We hope that relevant parties will make more effort towards peace and stability in the region," China's foreign ministry said in a brief statement faxed to AFP.

The government's response was in sharp contrast to a blistering editorial in the Global Times -- known for its nationalistic stance -- which said Beijing should impose sanctions against the Philippines over the move.

China should use its "leverage to cut economic activities" between the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries and consider "cooling down" business links with its smaller neighbour, according to the editorial published in the Chinese and English versions of the newspaper.

"It should show China's neighbouring areas that balancing China by siding with the US is not a good choice," it said.

"Well-measured sanctions against the Philippines will make it ponder the choice of losing a friend such as China and being a vain partner with the US."

China and the Philippines, along with Vietnam, have rival claims to parts of the South China Sea, home to some of the world's most important shipping lanes and believed to hold vast deposits of fossil fuels.

Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia also have claims in the South China Sea.

Manila and Hanoi complained repeatedly last year of what they said were increasingly aggressive acts by China in the decades-long rift.

The alleged acts, which included a Chinese naval ship reportedly firing warning shots at Filipino fishermen, fuelled fears among some nations in the region about China as its military and political strength grows.

The US has been looking to increase its military presence across Asia Pacific in a strategic shift that has angered China.

US President Barack Obama said in November the United States would deploy up to 2,500 Marines to northern Australia. The following month, a US admiral wrote that the US expected to station several combat ships in Singapore.

Wow! If the Chinese government actually considers this suggestion by the Global Times - that of imposing economic sanctions on the Philippines - among those to be affected are Chinese (legal and illegal) who sell wares of questionable quality in Divisoria. Good riddance!

I think it is better if the US government can help the Philippines in securing the West Philippine Sea in order for us to fully explore the huge oil / gas reserve in that area. Even if China suddenly cuts its economic ties with us, the gas deposit can power our own economy. So let the exploration begin. Let China know that we are not afraid to explore our own resources and depend our own land!

Even a small Nation like the Philippines has to maintain its Integrity; and if abused by any Bully-Nation, like China, she must defend her territory from any aggression of whatever kind. We can call the United Nation (not the U.S. specifically) to assist us if it becomes necessary The US offer to improve our Military potentials is very welcome.

Philippines will always consider friendship to China unless they will also offer respect and behave in a territory that is considered "under disputes". China should not move aggressively by stationing their Naval forces and should stop intruding islets and build perimeters. They should know that their moves are getting nearer to our lands while main land China was very far. They must also consider and respect our national security. NOT ALL THINGS UNDER CHINA SEA ARE CHINESE PROPERTY FOR CHINA WAS NOT THE OWNER OF CHINA SEA. You must know that it was only named SOUTH CHINA SEA so that those large waters under that vicinity will be easily located in the South East Asia.

Filipinos were not enemies of China for a very long time. Our ancestors became good friends and establish good relationships with the Chinese traders who came to Philippines. Some Chinese peacefully settled in our place and they flourished. There's no way that we can be enemy. Just respect the Filipinos and we will always settle good terms with Chinese citizens. We consider Chinese as good traders but Filipinos will always hold freedom as our treasure.

THE PHILIPPINES SHOULD NEVER TRUST CHINA. THEY ARE THE GREATEST LIAR IN THE WORLD. THEY BULLIED, HARASSED, INTIMIDATE, AND FIRED- UPON THE PHILIPPINE SHIPS AND FISHERMEN IN THE WEST PHILIPPINE SEA. VIETNAM WAS ALSO A VICTIM OF CHINA'S AGGRESSION. CHINA IS SHOWING ITS MILITARY AND ECONOMIC MIGHT TO INTIMIDATE HIS ASEAN NEIGHBORS LIKE JAPAN, VIETNAM, TAIWAN, AND THE PHILIPPINES. CHINA'S AMBITION OF BECOMING THE MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD MIGHT HAPPENED IN 5-10 YEARS TIME. WAR WOULD SURELY ERUPT IN THE SOUTH AND EAST CHINA SEA DUE TO CHINA'S AGGRESSIVE AND ASSERTIVE BEHAVIOR.

China is now angry so many chinese left and went to the Philippines and became Filipinos. All Chinese here love the Philippines, their new homeland and live their life here happily and successfully. Ask one Filipino Chinese if he want to go back to China and he will shake his head no. It's one reason China got insecure and also want to possess the Philippines...LOL!
