    CNY movie mix weekend

26 Jan – Supernatural action flick "Underworld: Awakening" starring the leather clad vampiress, Kate Beckinsale, had enough bite to take first place amassing US$25.3 million over its opening weekend. "Red Tails" a World War II fighter pilot movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard, made its debut at second place with US $18.7 million, while Mark Wahlberg's "Contraband" which was first the weekend before the last, now slows its punches to rest at third place at the North American box office for the weekend just gone (19-22 Jan) according to online tracker, Box Office Mojo.

In Malaysia however, major cinemas in the Klang Valley registered a slow weekend as most headed back to their hometowns to welcome the year of the Dragon for the 4-day long Chinese New Year weekend. However ,with a list of almost seven new Chinese movies currently showing in cinemas, none of them managed to place at the weekend box office, with the exception of "Ah Beng The Movie: 3 Wishes", a local movie by RAM Entertainment which took third place over the weekend.

Taking in first place in Malaysia however is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" which may attribute its prominent position thanks to the ticket sales garnered by its IMAX 3D version. Sinking its teeth at second place is the fourth instalment of the supernatural action, "Underworld: Awakening", which is also available in 3D minus the IMAX format.

While in Singapore, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" also took the top spot as the Singaporean film "We Not Naughty" secures second place. The Adam Sandler comedy "Jack & Jill" took the third spot at the weekend box office leaving "The Viral Factor" and "Dance Dance Dragon" to fall short of the prosperous festivities as they took the fourth and fifth place respectively last weekend.

In Malaysia, other releases over the weekend were "Sumpahan Kum Kum", "Agneepath", "I Love Hong Kong 2012" and "All's Well End's Well 2012".

On the other hand, other releases in Singapore were "The Monk", "I Love Hong Kong 2012", "Chaalis Chauraasi", "Businessman" and "Suatu Malam Kubur Berasap".
