Commentary: Is it rational to believe in God?

Banda Aceh, Indonesia (The Jakarta Post/ANN)- The world's most famous physicist Prof. Stephen Hawking has declared that God does not exist.

Hawking joins the opinion of several other world-class scientists like Richard Dawkins, Peter Atkins, James Watson, Victor Stenger and many others who deny the existence of God in the name of the latest advancements in physics, biology and other scientific domains.

The so-called "New Atheism" (championed by Richard Dawkins) sees God as a delusion, a by product of the mind of superstitious and scientifically uneducated people.

"Because there is a law like gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing ... Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists and why we are here". This is the conclusion of The Grand Design, Hawking's latest book.

Hawking's assertion is based on the predictions of his famous M-theory. But is Hawking's theory really an ultimate explanation? Has the grand master of physics checkmated the grand master of the universe? Let's examine things in more detail.

Einstein's theory of relativity says that time is not the same for everyone but is "relative" to how fast one is moving. At variable speeds or in the presence of weak and strong gravity time behaves elastically, it can stretch and shrink and even stop.

This phenomenon has been observed by measuring the rate of atomic clocks mounted on supersonic jet planes moving at different speeds at various distances from the Earth's surface.

Under extreme gravity like at the moment of the birth of the universe (the big bang), gravity was so intense that time was "compressed" to a zero point. Not only space but time itself was born at that moment. There was no "before".

Hawking states that a "law of gravity" exists and this (not God) creates the universe. Hawking surely also believes that gravity itself exists (since a law of gravity without "gravity" to describe would be meaningless). Now, if we say that X creates Y, we must presuppose the existence of X in the first place to bring Y into existence. Likewise, we must presuppose the existence of gravity to bring the universe into existence.

But Einstein's theory of relativity shows that this is illogical because it is like saying that gravity existed "before time" which is absurd. Did gravity spontaneously generate itself then? It is important to realize that it is logically impossible for a cause (gravity) to bring about an effect (its own creation) without already being in existence.

Hawking sustains that "the universe creates itself out of nothing". But Hawking's nothing is actually something: "Gravity" (first self-contradiction). Hawking then says that the universe creates itself (second self-contradiction). Thus, the conclusion of The Grand Design is actually a double self-contradiction.

Let's consider an Apple computer. Should we account for it by mentioning its inventor (Steve Jobs) or should we follow Hawking's reasoning and say that the Apple computer arose naturally from the laws of physics?

It actually makes no sense to choose between Jobs and the laws of physics to account for the existence of the Apple computer since both levels of explanation are needed. Jobs is needed to conceive and design the machine and the laws of physics are needed to make the computer processor work.

These two levels of explanations are not mutually exclusive but they complement each other. Science is concerned with "how" questions (how does the computer work?) and with functional questions (why is that circuit there?).

But science does not ask the "why" question of purpose (why was the computer built?) Purpose (Jobs in this case) does not even appear in the scientific account. But it would be ridiculous to say that Jobs did not exist. He is the actual reason why there is an Apple computer in the first place.

This is exactly what many scientists (including Hawking) do with God. They ask questions which exclude God ("how" questions and "functional" questions) and then they claim that God is unnecessary. This reasoning shows that offering a choice between God and the law of gravity is, in fact, illogical as both are needed.

Hawking in his book confuses two levels of explanation; "personal agency" and "physical law" and he attributes creative power (which is a personal agency) to a physical law.

Let's look at another example. If I put ¿1 in my bank account and another euro, the next the law of arithmetic 1+1=2 will explain "why" I have ¿2 in my account, it will not "create" ¿2 for me and it will surely not tell me anything about the purpose of me having ¿2 in my account.

Likewise, the law of gravity does not "create" gravity it only "explains" what's already there (gravity) and "predicts" how gravity behaves.

The bottom line is that the laws of physics cannot create anything or cause anything to happen. Rather than ultimate creators of the universe, they are just descriptions of how things behave.

What actually needs explaining is the logical characteristics and intelligibility of nature and the universe, not whether the universe generates itself spontaneously out of nothing or not.

Nobel laureate in physics Richard Feynman once stated: "The fact that there are rules like the law of gravity is some sort of miracle as it leads to the possibility of prediction; it tells you what you would expect to happen in an experiment you have not yet done".

Not denying the genius of Hawking, it appears that self-contradiction is possible even for world-famous scientists. The problem is that sometimes the illogicality of certain statements is obscured by the authority of those who make such statements and the general public often fails to see this.

World-wide prestige and distinguished scientific authority do not compensate for faulty logic and far from being a delusion the God hypothesis remains a rational explanation of why there is a universe rather than nothing.

It's very Hard really for this intellectual people to really understand what they can't explain. Again they are playing God in itself if all people believe their findings and thoughts and what they believe and what they want people to believe. Of course they can always cry out loud their belief's all day, I and other's can always scrutinize their findings as incomplete and limited. So bottom line why limit yourself thru their assumptions, as they are only human being like us....

Okay, first off, implying that if Steve Jobs hadn't invented the Apple computer that it wouldn't exist is ridiculous. If Jobs hadn't invented Apple somebody else would have eventually. And, secondly, I have a question for all of you 'logical' people who believe in God. If God truly did create the Universe, and if NOTHING can possibly ever create itself, then where and when did God come from? And don't say that God has always existed because EVERYTHING has a beginning and had to have started somewhere/somehow/sometime/etc.
      • HughB 4 months ago
I can't and won't be seen as His explainer, cause no one knows exactly how God came to be. As logically as I can put it, He is, and always was. I think that if God is real, I think He would be able to separate himself from the boundaries of humanity.

        He's God.
      • Robert 4 months ago
Your argument is ridiculous. If Steve Jobs didn't invent the Apple computer, then there would be no Apple computer. If someone else will have invented a computer then, it wouldn't be the same Apple as Steve Job's because he is not Steve Jobs.

There are plenty of netizens who ask, Who made gravity? Gravity is an inherent nature of heavenly bodies especially when it rotates or revolves and having a molten core. If the molten core of the Earth cools down, then that is the end of us all - we will be blown away to space. Gravity is an elusive force. When you up higher and higher outside our atmosphere, gravity is zero...you float. Gravity is a weak force yet, it holds heavenly bodies together. There is another term which aptly describe this... it is gravitational attraction. Newton has formulated a law on this, that any two bodies has certain amount of attractive force - the larger the body, the greater the amount of force, and the farther the lesser the amount of force. We cannot see gravity, although we can suspect there is. The gravity of the earth resembles a magnet...that's why we have north and south pole. Electricity is also related to magnetism.

Back to the question...Who made Gravity? I will not answer directly but instead I will make another question which is directly related to it. It runs like this: Can we make gravity? The answer is a big YES! An experiment simulating the Earth but instead of using a molten iron, a molten sodium chloride (salt) was used. When the sphere was made to rotate, the experimenters were able to produce magnetism.

Where in religion the line of questioning stops at: Who made God?, in Science, as of now, it stops at the question: Who made gravity? But I have said scientist made great progress in explaining what gravity is, although the theoritical force carrier particle the scientists called gravitons. have not been found.

This has turned out to be quite a debate. Still I see people quoting scripture to try to change the mind of a person who has no belief in the scriptures. This will not change their minds. Look for a moment at both sides. The bible places the, earth at no more than 6000 years, yet we find fossils that are 100 million years old. Now we have science saying that everything was created from nothing, yet science also has stated that matter cannot be created nor destoyed, only transformed. There are flaws on both sides. I wish the people would just learn to agree to disagree and let it go. Neither side has any "proof" and they never will. Cannot we just get along with each other and respect each other's right to their own beliefs? peace

Purpose is not important in most phenomena and processes. "Design" in nature can be achieved from pure entropy and chaos which needs no "designer". What directs most processes is entropy, in which disorder is increased, prevents totally reversible processes while conserving energy. Chaos is about simple rules in physics that becomes distorted and becomes increasingly unpredictable creates self-replicating patterns. Concepts in science actually defies common sense and are self-contradictory when you really come to think of it (nuclear force, atomic structure, quantum mechanics, etc). These scientists are at peace that there is no God. However, most people only see their God as a creator, remove that, and poof, there goes their faith.

I believe in the Big Bang and evolution because of the scientific evidences gathered but I do believe there is a God. (emphasis on believe here) I think the problem is taking the verses in either the Bible or Quran literally especially on the creation part. Now whether people accept that there is a God is just a matter of faith. I am scientist by the way. And I do not judge atheists, agnostics or believers for their beliefs or lack of it. Respect is the key I guess.

      1. "Because there is a law like gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing"
      - You cannot create anything out of nothing, how can you create 2 with nothing? The relation of this to the universe where did the materials that formed the formation of the universe? If universe was created from nothing then it will not be formed. You can't form "some thing" without "no thing" at all. There is a law like gravity from Isaac Newton, what results the falling of the object, is it nothing at all? In CREATING anything, you need a CREATOR, how can you form a car without a machine operated/regulated by people. What results gravity? It down there at the core, what/who regulates the movement in the core? In regulating something you need a regulator. The universe itself formed out of SOMETHING and out of SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

      2. "Gravity was so intense that time was "compressed" to a zero point" - What/Who caused this compression? It can stretch by itself but it is stretched by a force not from nothing.

"Has the grand master of physics checkmated the grand master of the universe? Let's examine things in more detail." - Um. You don't have a grandmaster of the universe. You aren't even playing the game. Even if Hawking is wrong, and the above article does nothing to actually demonstrate that other than an argument from incredulity and misunderstanding the physics Hawking is using and trying to make understandable. Regardless if Hawking is right or not on his specific theory, in general concept of God has never ever been the right answer to anything in the history of knowledge. Sure, lightning thunder, disease, life, heredity, anything you want and at some point somebody chalked that up to gods and they were wrong. In each and every case they were dead wrong. So why should the universe be any different? Even if Hawking's theory isn't right undoubtedly something like Hawking's theory will be right. Because such answers have always turned out to be right and fairy tales about how a magical man with superpowers made that to exist the way it does, has always been wrong.

You don't get to win by default. Has the grand master of physics checkmated the flying spaghetti monster? Well, I don't get understand quantum physics so Hawking is wrong and therefore it's reasonable to believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

For Dr. Robert Jastrow , the technology and discoveries of the early 80s are already out of date. Now, more than ever, scientist has been discovering dozens of earth like planets located in the habitable zone in each of its own systems and may contain life, and more than 500 newly discovered stars harboring planets similar to our solar system. The Vatican was quick to address that if any life would be concluded, it would not cause a collapse in faith since God supposedly created the universe. How absurd. No mention in the bible about twin earth like planets but then again we see that religion would never seizes to take credit for each discovery. Religion has pushed your Gods to every conceptualized beginning there is, and in every scenario of origins discovered by man.

If a person is an atheist, non Atheist can teach him to be one, if still he dont want, leave him there. because salvation is a grace, its a privilege. We are all given choices, everyone has the freedom to choose. We have options, we choose, by our own.

Faith is the opposite of logic. You have faith because you believe in something which is outside the boundaries of logic. Atheism and faith will forever clash. But science and faith need not to, you just have to be open minded and recognize the relation between the two. Science only proves what was written thousands of years ago in the bible. I bet many atheists who despise the bible haven't even read it, or have read it, but taken it in literal form

"far from being a delusion the God hypothesis remains a rational explanation of why there is a universe rather than nothing."

It's only partially rational - in that the story itself follows a logical sequence.

What is certainly not rational is to form the belief that it is the definitive, factual account of events.
