25 Jul – "The Dark Knight Rises" may not have matched "Marvel's The Avengers" 4-day total (19 - 22 July) grossing in the U.S. box office, but it will definitely go down in history as the film that incited the Colorado massacre on 20 July, where a red-haired gunman who called himself 'The Joker' showed up and shot 12 people and injured 58 moviegoers in cold blood during the midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises". This may also have resulted in lower grosses for Christopher Nolan's final film in his "Batman" trilogy, which was US$160.9. The film picks up eight years after the events of "The Dark Knight", where Batman (Christian Bale) took the blame for Harvey Dent's crimes and ran into hiding. When a new terrorist leader who calls himself Bane (Tom Hardy) overwhelms Gotham's finest, Batman feels compelled to resurface to assist the city, along with a mysterious lady who goes by the alias of Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), whose motives may or may not be pure. In lieu of the highly anticipated blockbuster release, "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" dipped to second while in third place is Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man".
Thankfully in Malaysia, there was no tragedy to grace the release of "The Dark Knight Rises", which also debuted in top spot. It is only three days later that a robbery commenced in GSC IOI Mall Puchong, where four masked men made away with the ticket sales of the "The Dark Knight Rises" totalling RM140,000. However, the performance of "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" are reversed here, with the former in second while the latter fell to third spot.
Meanwhile Singapore's box office charts ran in much the same vein as the U.S., with "The Dark Knight Rises" opening in first place while "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" placed second and "The Amazing Spider-Man" third.
No other new movies opened in Malaysia during the week (19 – 22 July).
For Singapore, the only new movie that opened was "One Night Stand".
