Demand for coco-diesel spells good news for coconut farmers

    By Alexander Villafania

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA - Coconut farmers in the Philippines could generate as much as P2 billion in revenues yearly in the sale of coconut oil for use in coco-diesel production.

The government is looking into increasing production of coconut oil for fuel. During a press conference, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Spokeswoman Thelma Tolentino said the production of coco-diesel could further strengthen the coconut industry in the Philippines.

As demand grows for coco-diesel, so will coconut oil production, which would contribute to the local economy of coconut farming communities.

Coco-diesel is already blended in some regular diesel fuels sold locally as part of compliance with Republic Act 9367 or the Biofuels Act. The current mix is at two percent but plans are underway to increase the mix to about five percent.

Tolentino said pursuing this type of project not only would have economic benefits but also ecological. She pointed out to studies showing that bio-diesel has less negative impact on the environment than fossil fuels.

Likewise, the amount of bio-diesel additive to traditional diesel is commensurate to an increase in engine efficiency.

Several programs are being implemented to look at biofuel sources. Coco-diesel is one of the major programs though there are also programs for sweet sorghum, jatropha, and other types of palm trees.

Among the agencies looking for viable supply of biofuels are the Department of Energy (DoE) and Department of Science and Technology (DoST).

      hhmmnnnn

sugarcane and coconut in the 60s and 70s

      then

      palm oil in the 80s

      then

jathropa or tubatuba in the early 2000

      and now back to coconut?

without continuity and focus we cannot go anywhere in
      our search for alternative fuels

bio or plant based fuels take decades to plan and execute because
we have to grow the bio source,

we have abundant supply of sugarcane
      that can produce alcohol

we had ample supply of matured coconuts in the 70s
but we logged them and used them as cheap sources of lumber

we were promised fuel from palm oil that was vastly planted and
harvested in mindanao, looks like indonesia was the one who
      benefited from it

we were promised clean and readily available fuel as recent as the last
administration in the form of jathropa or tuba tuba, many agricultural
land were converted and were duped

if we dont stick to a viable plan and execute it, we will be forever be
dependent on foreign petroleum/coal based fuel sources that will
deplete our dollar reserves and will slowly take out our farmers from the
      equation of fuel independence...................

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------

the only fuel that seem to be abundant in our country seem to be GREED
greed that fuels corruption and indifference

      hehehehehehhehehe

That is good for the provinces like Quezon to produce this alternative fuel to lower the demand of oil in the Philippines.
