Despair as China executes three Filipinos

Chinese authorities executed three Filipino drug mules on Wednesday, triggering condemnation in the Catholic Philippines and despair for relatives who witnessed their final moments.

"I just want to inform you that our three compatriots have been executed," Vice President Jejomar Binay announced over local radio, although there being no public announcement from the Chinese government.

"It is a sad day for all of us. Until the last moment, we did everything we could to save the three."

The three -- Ramon Credo, 42, Sally Villanueva, 32, and Elizabeth Batain, 38 -- were arrested separately in China in 2008 for smuggling heroin and sentenced to death.

The Philippine government had made repeated appeals in recent months to spare the lives of the trio, including by sending Binay to Beijing on a mission to have their sentences commuted to life in jail.

But the Chinese government insisted there would be no favours for the trio, and that their cases would be dealt with according to domestic laws.

The three were allowed to meet their relatives for an hour before they were put to death through lethal injection, in what turned out to be devastatingly emotional encounters.

"She was crying, she was partly incoherent. She had a lot of things to say," said Jason Ordinario, a brother of Villanueva who along with another sister and their parents met her as the final verdict was read in a court in Xiamen city.

"She asked us to take care of her children and make sure they can finish studies," he told DZBB radio from China.

Villanueva's relatives said she did not know that she was due to be executed on Wednesday, and was surprised to see her family there.

"I was the first one to see her, we locked eyes and we both cried. She said what are you doing here, why are you all crying, am I going to die," younger sister Mylene said on DZBB.

"She tried to console us. She said, it's okay. I have accepted my fate. I will be your angel and watch over you."

Villaneuva's children, aged 12 and nine, were not able to see or talk with their mother before she was killed. They did not travel to China and local authorities would not allow mobile phones into the meeting room.

Amnesty International as well as the influential Roman Catholic church swiftly condemned the executions, and accused the Philippine President Benigno Aquino's government of not doing enough to save the three.

"We strongly condemn the executions of the three Filipinos," Amnesty's Philippine representative, Aurora Parong, told AFP.

"The Philippines should have taken a stronger action, and it is now its moral duty to lead a campaign against death penalty in Asia."

Roman Catholic bishops asked the public to pray for the eternal repose of the three.

"We had knocked on the doors of heaven to pray for what turned out to be an impossible wish," Edwin Corros, executive secretary of church's commission for the pastoral care of migrants, told AFP.

"We call on China to abolish death penalty. We believe no one has the right to take a human life."

The Philippine government insisted it did all it could to save the lives of the three.

It argued the trio, who are among 227 Filipinos jailed in China for drug offences, were from poor families and had been duped by international crime syndicates into becoming drug couriers.

Aside from his visit to Beijing, Binay sent a letter this week to Chinese President Hu Jintao in a last-ditch appeal.

In December, the Philippines also skipped the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo for jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo in a move Aquino said was aimed at saving condemned Filipinos in China.

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

I was on a flight to Singapore a few years ago when a Philipino married couple with two small childred asked if i could take one of their bags with me as they had excess baggage and no money. I only had hand carried and politely refused as they were not willing to open the bag for my inspection. Another foreigner in the que said he would take it for them as was also on business and only had hand carry baggage.. To make a long story short when we landed in Singapore there was a load of Ghurka's with Uzi's standing around the baggage pick up carrosell. The foreigner picked up the bag he was given to carry and was imediately arrested. a week or so later he was charged with drug trafficing even though he claimed the bag was not his. But since the baggage tag number was on his ticket he was found guilty. He was lucky and only got "Life" I find it hard to believe that the 3 Filipono's in China did not know what they were carrying. Just trying to make a fast buck as is seen so often here..

Sometimes we Filipinos were passive when we talk on this matters. Because we are afraid on the retaliation that will be done to us. But if we are concerned to what is around us, as long as this will benefit to us and to others, why do we afraid to confront? Hopefully we have to do our parts as human being.

Who is to blame? Pnoy?, I don't think so - the catholic church is quick to point fingers, it is them who should be blamed. Pnoy has been president for less than a year, the guy hardly had anything to do with this people. The catholic priest on the other hand have been with this people since their baptism, first communion, first confession and since then I'm sure this people go to church. What values was formed? I don't hate the catholic church but for them to meddle in politics? It's not their job, that is why there is separation between the church and the state. Think guys!!!

How can you be so shortsighted. This is a matter of life and death. The church doesnt take a political act in this matter but is doing her duty in a moral affair that you shall not kill. You say you dont hate the church ok try to have insight in what they teach about life and death, or maybe in your opinion even Amensty International doesnt have the right to make a statement about it. If your are religious or not taking the lifes of this naive people who just were thinking they had a job to take care for their families, is even a bigger crime! And their chinese eployers are still in the philippines, the wrong people are sentenced to death coz when they gonna find those chinese they will not be sentenced to death here coz there is no death penalty here, so also think.
      • nix 1 year 1 month ago
This is really a sad day, but instead of mourning everyone should take this as a life lesson. We cannot always use the reason for being naive all the time. I am not really in favor of death penalty but we should also take into account that in all our actions there are pros and cons. In this case they faced a very big consequence which caused their own lives. I feel sorry for their families especially for the kids. This is not the time to blame anyone. This is not the time to blame the government nor the church. Both are doing there what they're supposed to do at the end of the day it is each and everyone of us who decides our fate. If we choose to do good things then we are blesed but when we choose to do bad things then we have to face the consequences. It is not bad to try to appeal for a lower sentence than death but we should also try to understand that they are just following the law mandated in China. On a fair note China implemented this policy to all nationals of each and every country and the same were implemented to their own nationals. This only shows that they were just following the laws set in their country. Each country have laws and we should abide by it at all times. the same way each and everyone of us have our own opinions. At this point we should just pray for their souls and their families. Today we think and look at the sad life story of the 3 who were executed but based on the conversations posted here no one even thought how drugs affected and ruined so many lives. All countries, governments and religous groups must join hands to stop those groups who uses poverty and take take advantage of those people who are in need and wisheso give a good life to their families. Let us not argue instead let us do our part as citizens and as sons and daughters of God, Allah and others to spread a helping hand, love and compassion to others. PEACE!

I could hardly understand you people. Everytime sometihng goes wrong, especially with this kind of wrongdoings of our fellow Filipino,we have to blame the goverment, the president, so and so. Why don't you blame them for their own misdeeds. People like you must be idiots.

why should the philippines be in despair? shall the people condone the menace of drug trafficking? dapat lang na bitayin silang 3 dahil mga drug traffickers sila. at dapat, isinama na rin si ronald singson para pantay pantay ang implementation ng batas. salot sila sa lipunan. dapat lang na bitayin sila para hindi na pamarisan. the filipino people are very happy of this verdict. ubusin lahat na mga salot na drug dealers!!!!!!

These people were criminals and caught in the possession of drugs that would cause misery to many chinese families. You Filipino's make martyrs of them. What right have you to expect different treatment to all other nationals caught in China. Whether they were duped or not, everyone knows not to take anothers baggage. You cry over these three yet there are another 200 waiting in China for sentence. Better you cry for your nation that allows army generals to take your money and all the other corrupt elites. Better you cry for the millions who live in poverty, and the children who sleep on the ground in Manila while the rich drive past. Nepotism rules in appointment to good jobs and wealth making your departments ineffective. The Lacson case shows that all the departments are useless and not fit for purpose. Get a grip of the Millions of tour people who are on Shabu, and stop weeping for those who break another countries laws.

The Catholic Church said the government did not do anything they can to stop the execution. So what should have the government done? It's not our law in concern. It's not our territory and society violated...it's the Chinese government's. Like I said and as we ALL KNOW, there was a violation. And according to the ruler party over that territory, the act deserved death.

We do not like what happened to our Kababayans. I myself feel very depressed over the event. Ever wondered why other countries especially China goes way up high year by year while we Filipinos go down the slope without breaks? Sorry to disappoint you but it's not the government to blame here. It's our culture.

Remember mamaya na, bahala na, utak talangka, chismis cultures among others? We are all emotional at this time but let us please maintain a clear and fair mind. Ask first why we are at this end.

P.S. Kawawa tayo. Tsk tsk tsk.
    • jocobra  •  1 year 1 month ago
It is about crime and punishment. Masyado tayong emotional. In China, the policy for serious crime is 'kill one (criminal) and teach a thousand'. In the Phils, it is 'free one (criminal) and teach a thousand (to commit more crimes)'. Our attention and emotion should be on the 57 innocent filipinos massacred by filipinos out of political greed. The Ampatuans are still smiling.

I have come along some posts of which were "challenging" the Holy CHURCH People and the Vigilant Human Rights Group to run the government since they keep on meddling with the government affairs, coming to a point influencing our Law Makers...I was shocked at the same amused..wow..AWESOME..
In jest and exaggerated humor,I would wish to share to you my disagreement...."Giving the IDEA (encouragment..hehe) to the HOLY Priests and the BRAVE and HONORABLE HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS...
"kindly let me discuss this "matter"...please for the sake of being "awake",sane, and logical,do not suggest that these HOLY GROUP of people run our government..baka they would use this idea to rally for some government position/s...or even the presidency..sigurado yan,,kakagatin nila ito hehehehe..naloka na tayo..kung magiging matagumpay itong mga "banal",baka palitan nila ang karamihan ng mga batas natin na tuwing may trahedya, kailangang ituwid, important projects, diplomatic issues,etc..ay DASAL sa ROSARY ang igawad..naloko na lalo...ang hindi magdarasal ay ikukulong ng habang buhay..hahahahahahahaha..
..this is a satire kind of suggestion....my objective here is to have ourselves distinguish true logic/reality from our highly reverend developed emotions of "LOVE" ...
...The way I see it(hope you, at least would give a "nod") we'd be able to give more "LOVE" and equal respect when we abide to our laws as defined by our constitution, and refrain from changing practical and realistic laws(...change these laws because the Church and Human Rights Group vehemently dislike it),,,,,example:DEATH PENALY-removed....
..apparently,there have been no strong and applicable alternative/s for the deleted "unpopular laws(sabi ng mga pari at human rights na grupo) to curb and at least minimize crimes we call HEINOUS....ang magtulak ng droga ok,kung hindi mahuhuli, kung mahuli dito sa atin, kulong lang, pinakamabigat ay habang buhay sa sa aircondtioned room pa..hehehe..pero kung mahuli sa ibang bansa at mahatulan ng bitay sila,,,,nandyan ang mga pari para magbindisyon sa mga ibibitay, pagkatapos,,,,by law(kung magiging opisyal ng bayan ang mga banal),kailangan punuin ng tao ang Luneta,Ayala Avenue,EDSA para sa prayer rally...kung hindi...ang hindi pupunta ay maikukulong at hindi na makakapag kumunyon habang buhay.....o,ok ba sa inyo iyo,ha???
I hope this ridiculous post of mine would open up the minds(..hhmm maybe not all) of our kababayans who have posted similar ridiculous and hilarious but bad to the taste comments like "..sana si Noynoy na lang ang ipinalit sa mga nabitay(wow...uhhgg)/kailangan gantihan natin ang mga intsik(..bakit?)/kailangan i-boycot ang lahat ng mga itinitinda ng mga intsik sa Divisoria(..nanay ko po)/..dapat naglumuhod ang presidente ng Pilipinas sa China...(WHAT?!!)/..China can show the world and be proud by making a big difference today..:spare the mules(ngek!! nang-uuto pa)/..oh a lot more..
..time for a REAL change????(hindi lang lip service)
..I am not suggesting or persuading our kababayans to turn their back to GOD...NO!
but I am insinuating that we have to be more practical and realistic in our thoughts and daily life processes.."huwag ipasaalang- alang sa Diyos ang mga susunod na man----ayari"..WOW!

China had done their part, when can we do ours??
    • extreme  •  1 year 1 month ago
Chinese are arrogant and always put themselves as higher individual. They looked Filipinos as slaves with no use at all.... Its time to act on this situation. They should take consequences of their actions.. They pry on us (Filipinos)... these will be remembered.

a very easy political equation, this is a result of an international propaganda of what are the true state of relationship between countries...

nailabas ba sa media na may mga bibitaying Filipino before the Mendoza amok who killed chinese tourist?/ di ba walang kaalam-alam ang mga Pinoy na sentenced na pala ung mga kababayan natin...

in short, Chinese government is sending a very strong message to our deeply wounded government - that Chinese will prove to be the Giant Tiger in Asia and that their position should be really looked up to...

Now i hope that Philippine government will sweep all illegal Chinese businessmen and drug traffickers living in the corrupt shadows of TRAPOS in our government and at least execute them and let the world know that we are also serious in battling crimes- starting within our own territories...

My deepest and sincerest condolences to the families of the executed Filipinos.
I too am a Filipino and I understand that the family culture in the Philippines is very deeply rooted in every Filipino. Thats why we are affected by this so much.
But the law is the law. We must also respect the laws of other countries. We should not let our emotions flare up and say things that we couldn't take back.
If it would deter lawless elements, FOREIGN OR DOMESTIC, then, so be it. In effect, they have forfeited their own rights, after all drug pushing is a heinous crime.
This should be a lesson for all of us. We should not let the lives of our compatriots be a waste. Time to wake up and do something about it.

I really feel sorry for the three Filipino's who got executed today, regardless of reason's why they got involved in such a transaction with an offer of money in dollars, they perhaps couldn't refuse.
But it is so unfair to blame it on President Aquino. I am sure that he tried his best, that's why he sent VP Binay to China to appeal. Let us not forget that each neighboring country has their own "Rule of Law" just as we do, the difference is that their law is "none negotiable". Unlike our Law money talks, so why blame the this tragedy on PNoy? He didn't tell those guys to be mules. We are very well aware, that anywhere one goes, getting involved in drugs is a real no no, so c'mon, they should ready for the blessing/consequences of their action. Like they say, "don't do the crime, if you can't do the time". I just pray that the women who sacrificed their life for a better future for her children, the guardians spend & use up the money to better the children by giving them a good education so they will not suffer the same fate as their parents. If you want to make a difference, help the children, set up a foundation...just an idea......
