Hip-hop mogul Diddy gets his own television channel, Revolt, basketball legend Magic Johnson will launch his network, Aspire, and next is filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who will deliver El Rey, a channel for the Latino audience in English.
The three ventures are in partnership with Comcast, the largest cable television provider in the US, which also owns NBC/Universal.
Rodriguez's films include the Spy Kids series as well as edgy action movies in a self-proclaimed "Mariachi style," such as Sin City, Desperado, Machete and Grindhouse in collaboration with Quentin Tarantino.
Rodriguez's vision for El Rey is "an action-packed, general entertainment network" and will include "a mix of reality, scripted and animated series, movies, documentaries, news, music, comedy, and sports programming."
"We are passionate about creating a wildly entertaining destination that we can be proud of by appealing to both Latino and mass market audiences," said Rodriguez and partner John Fogelman in the press release.
The channel will feature "Hispanic producers, celebrities and public figures," and plans to begin telecasting by January 2014.
