    • Corona suddenly leaves impeachment court

Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom - Tue, May 22, 2012

Embattled Chief Justice Renato Corona has maintained he was falsely accused in his impeachment, as he lamented President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's "hatred" against him.

The number of blood donations contaminated by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) almost doubled this year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Monday.

This year, 32 bags of blood donations tested positive for HIV from 17 in 2010, the DOH said in a report on GMA News’ “24 Oras" newscast. The DOH conducted the testing in June.

“Medyo nababahala kami kasi taun-taon, dumarami ang nagpa-positive sa screening at confirmation," said DOH National Epidemiology Center director Dr. Enrique Tayag in an interview on “24 Oras."

Transfusion of HIV-contaminated blood is one way to spread the virus, aside from unprotected sex with a partner, among other things.

HIV patients in the Philippines rose to 178 in June 2011 from 109 in the same period last year.

Considering all the risk involving blood transfusion, why not approach bloodless surgery procedure?
      BLOODLESS surgery benefits are:

      > Avoid Bloodborne diseases such as AIDS/HIV

      >Avoid Transfusion reactions related to medical errors .

      >Avoid disruption of immune system

      >Others.

It should be automatic that a donor must undergo thorough screening prior to donating blood not just a mere interview whether he/she should be screened or not for HIV.

I agree with Rommel Asto. Patients should have the discretion on opting to receive the newly donated blood from relatives or friends and not the "old" stock. At least in a way the patient is reassured and knowledgeable of the donor's history...

Most people that sold there blood to the local blood banks were alcoholics, addicts, unemployed or tambay and etc..to earn easy money, so watch out and be careful laboratorists, your job is to check and examine properly the subjects, if doubtful immediately to the trash, dont put your buyer or recipients into risk.

Marami sa may Quiricada for example.

        @Nestors

Posting your e-mail add on a public message board is pretty dumb to begin with, never mind the straw man argument that you're trying to bring up in this article.

I think the process for blood typing and cross-matching blood in laboratories should be more meticulous than before since sometimes, the people themselves do not know that they are infected.

Its unfortunate for those patients, especially children, who go to the hospital for a simple dengue and have a blood transfusion of platelets then gets discharged with HIV.

If you want to donate blood, please know how you'll affect others lives. This is one reason why blood and other organs cannot be sold. Illegal laboratories should be closed down.

Why is it? That most Filipinos treat the issue of AIDS or any STD'S as a Taboo?
Answer: The great majority follow religiously the catholic church policies of no usage of condoms.

Answer: Safe sex and Sexual orientation in most cases is absolute -0.

How come the Government agencies will not publish the cruel and real statistics of exposure to HIV and other STD'S among the Population in the Filipinos?

Answer: I'll leave it to your considerations and conscious.

This could be one indicator that the number of HIV and AIDS-infected persons in the Philippines is on the rise. Filipinos might be too lax or in denial on the issue of HIV-AIDS, and we must do something positive to prevent it from getting out of hand... In a few African countries, almost half of the population are already HIV-positive.

I donated blood in 2009. Before I lay down in the bed, I had been interviewed. I was asked if I had sex with someone of the same sex more than 2 weeks ago.
