    DOLE wants less holidays

Good news for businessmen, bad news for workers?

For on Thursday, the Department of Labor and Employment cautioned the government in declaring more non-working holidays, saying that these have “negative” effects on workers.

DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz urged lawmakers to take into consideration the effects of additional non-working holidays in the overall productivity and competitiveness of the Philippine economy, particularly on labor and employment, before crafting legislative measures on holidays.

Baldoz said that according to a report from the Bureau of Working Conditions, more special non-working holidays create negative rather than positive welfare effects because the principle of “no work, no pay” applies.

“For daily paid workers, the opportunity to produce goods of economic value and to earn wages is lost during a special non-working day,” the DOLE statement read.

For 2012, President Benigno Aquino III declared a total of 18 holidays which include 12 regular holidays and six special non-working days.

The DOLE noticed that Philippines has more holidays than Australia which has eight; Singapore, 11; Indonesia, 14; Japan, 15; Thailand, 15; Malaysia, 16; South Korea, 16; and Hong Kong, 17. Only China, which has 29, has more holidays the Philippines, it added.

“Declaring holidays has implications on productivity and competitiveness. It is associated with issues on rights at work. Reviewing the implementation of holidays is necessary to contribute to the Philippine development goal of inclusive growth, through decent and productive work,” Baldoz said.

What do you think about this? Should there be lesser holidays?

      • sweetmangolady 2 months ago

Phil must therefore declare the Amercan Landing in Leyte, the date Lapu Lapu killed Magellan, etc etc etc, if that is the agrugent. These are all important dates of the Philippine history. Special working holidays are good for those who have enough, but very very bad for those daily paid. Special holidays should be voluntary for the workers and workplace should accomodate those who wanted to work.

It's not in numbers, it's much deeper than that. Too many factors, that affects China's rise. The truth is we have the numbers and yet our country is still like this. Somehow late President Ferdinand Marcos, has a great effect in the rise of many Asian nations, he truly is a wise and intelligent leader. I thought Pres. GMA can surpass him, but I was wrong, she is worse hahahaha.

Inutil talaga itong DOLE na to. Bwisit

I think DOLE is not aware that "holidays" is one of the happiness of the private employees. Since we are very fully loaded in our work compared to some government agencies. :(

KAILANGAN PA BANG SABIHIN SA INYO YAN O NAGBUBULAG-BULAGAN LANG KAYO!!! HINDI NYO LANG KAYANG BANGGAIN KASI YUNG MALALAKING ISDA KAYA KUNG ANU-ANO NIREREKOMENDA NYO PARA LANG MASABI NA NAGTATRABAHO KAYO DYAN SA OPISINA NYO!!!

it's better to cut holidays but improve working conditions of workers especially for private sectors eg monday to friday working days and 30 days leaves with pay, and typhoon signal #3 shall be applied to private as well....comparative benefits and welfare between government and private has a big gap..DOLE should review private sectors deeply...more working time does not do good to mental health to workers.

    • draftsman  •  2 months ago
wag ang holidays ang bawasan nyo!!!! ang TAX ang bawasan nyo!!!.....

“Declaring holidays has implications on productivity and competitiveness.".....too much TAX has implications on productivity and integrity of GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS!!!!

babawasan nyo ang Holidays ng working masses? pero ang SENATE at CONGRESS may 1 month lenten vacation!?!?!?! eh 1 week lang ang Holy week!!!!...mag recess ang SENATE shortly after March 23...and resumption is May 7!!!!!
    • Observer  •  Tokyo, Japan  •  2 months ago
I think it is not the holidays that are keeping investors from coming. It is still the red tape and corruption.

DOLE please focus on more job creation than holidays reduction.
