  • Ely magic strengthens Soapdish album

Manila Bulletin - Friday, November 6

If there's a song that loudly declares the effect of rock icon Ely Buendia on Pinoy pop culture, it's the track that graced the new album of four-piece band Soapdish called "Goodluck.. Goodbye." The song is titled "Parang Si Ely Buendia," a number inspired by someone's obsession for the former Eraserheads frontman or to be more precise the defined image he created for rockstar wannabes.

Penned by vocalist Jeff Bolivar, the wittily titled song is easily the catchiest piece in the 12-track venture from Viva Records.

  • Sponge Cola and their dream collaborations

Manila Bulletin - Friday, November 6

In line with their successful collaboration with Gary Valenciano, Pinoy rock band Sponge Cola looks forward to working with other artists including diva Lea Salonga.

"Hindi ko alam kung paano mangyayari 'yon (recording a song with Lea), but I'd like [that] to [happen]," said Sponge Cola lead guitarist Erwin "Armo" Armovit in a recent interview.

Erwin imagines the collaboration to be "a ballad with string [arrangement]," adding in jest that having "a flying carpet" (referring to Lea's participation in the OST of Disney's "Aladdin") around when they do won't be such a bad idea.

Yael Yuzon, the band's vocalist, amplified Armo's wishful thinking.

"Kailangang gumawa ng next generation na 'A Whole New World.' 'Yon din kasi 'yong nami-miss ko sa Disney, 'yong mga songs," he said.

Other artists the band hopes to work with are Hotdog, Megastar Sharon Cuneta, OPM legend Rey Valera, "Wowowee" host-singer Willie Revillame, and novelty songsmith Lito Camo.

Yael recalled working with Gary on the song "Ayt!" He said that doing so not only touched him on a professional level, but on a personal one.

"I had stopped praying at one point because hindi naman ako religious, but [working with Gary] had me praying again."

Sponge Cola talked about the prevailing trend in the OPM scene.

  • MYMP reaches crossroad, Juris bids adieu

Manila Bulletin - Thursday, November 5

Juris Fernandez and Chin Alcantara, prime movers behind the popular acoustic group Make Your Momma Proud or MYMP, finally confirmed the dissolution of their partnership.

The group made the official announcement via an email sent to Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online through their manager Carla Lozada.

According to the duo, they have decided to part ways due to "irreconcilable professional differences."

The letter revealed Fernandez's plan of going solo, having already signed a one-album deal with Star Records.

Alcantara is planning to continue with MYMP and is looking for a new partner.

Rumors about the duo's parting made inroads middle of this year when Fernandez started appearing by her lonesome in an "ASAP '09"'segment which has her singing with other solo artists including Richard Poon and Aiza Seguerra.

A newspaper ran a story on the matter last week, after the band failed to attend the first-ever Philippine Movie Press Club Music Awards in which the group won for Best duo/group.

That said, the band kept silent until now.

Their joint statement reads as follows:

"We have come to this difficult decision after a period of discernment and deliberation.

Martin also paraded a collection of footages from his concerts, as well as a plethora of shoes and clothes in his wardrobe room.

He then let the staff view his gym area and master's bedroom, followed by a look in his bathroom which, he said, resembles that of his ex-wife Pops Fernandez's whose house is just a stone's throw away from his.

There's also the sunset deck which he "no longer enjoys" because the view has already been obstructed by another house.

  • An Hermes bag for Angelica

Manila Bulletin - Thursday, November 5

After giving girlfriend Angelica Panganiban a Mini Cooper for an anniversary gift, Derek Ramsay now follows up with another "dream come true" present.

At Angelica's surprise birthday party organized by her close friends and some relatives, Derek surprised the actress by giving her an orange Hermes bag -- apparently one of the celebrant's most ardent wish.

So, how did Derek figure out what she wanted to receive for her birthday?

According to Angelica, it was she who unwittingly informed the actor.

"Nagtatanong na siya, matagal na, kung ano ang gusto kong gift."

Derek, who connived with their friends to keep it a secret until the last minute, had a ready script which he acted out at the party venue.

    Angelica said.
