Filipino Cardinal urges charm offensive but hits President's lack of faith

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Take it from someone who has walked the corridors of power at the Vatican.

Saying that Philippine President Benigno Aquino III was now "losing his popularity", Jose Cardinal Sanchez, the oldest among the country's three living cardinals, has urged Catholic bishops to go on a charm offensive and befriend congressmen to win them over in the reproductive health (RH) bill debate.

Sanchez, 91, also lamented in an interview with CBCP News that President Aquino's mother (the late President Corazon Aquino) and his sisters had "more faith than him".

"He is now losing his popularity. He has no firm idea on marriage. It is too much politics now and no longer religion. (His) mother (the late former President Corazon Aquino) and (his) sisters have more faith than him," said Sanchez, who once oversaw the diocesan priests around the world as prefect of the Vatican Congregation on the Clergy.

    Hiking Filipinos' income

Sanchez said that the government should try to improve the lot of Filipino families by increasing their income instead of "destroying" them by pushing for the RH bill.

But with the President losing his popularity, Sanchez said that Congress would not be able to pass the bill. And a charm offensive could help.

Sanchez recalled that when he was once a bishop assigned in Bicol, he was a "friend to all the congressmen" so it was easy for him to confront them when a proposed law contradicted church doctrine.

"If there are bills contradictory to the Catholic teachings, I would go to these congressmen one by one to enlighten them with the Catholic teachings and they would easily agree with me. And as friends, they would find it hard to go against the bishop," Sanchez said.

However, he admitted that it would be harder to do this now since many lawmakers today are non-Christians.

    What next?

Sanchez said he came back to the country from Rome to ward off the "tendencies that threaten to destroy the Catholic Church."

He said he was worried that same-sex marriage, which he said had been approved in Brazil - the world's largest Catholic country - might also be "accepted" later in the Philippines.

"I did not come here to fight the RH Bill. I came here to protect the Catholic doctrine. (The RH bill) is insignificant as far as the problems of the world are concerned. But I'm happy that it is being faced seriously by the Philippine Church," Sanchez said.

He said that if the Church fails to reverse these "tendencies" that threaten the Church, there would be fewer priests in the country in 50 years' time.

"The world is changing, and the evil doesn't stop. I hope the Philippines will remain a Christian country. But I know the (Filipino) Christians are not sleeping, they keep on fighting," Sanchez said.

And another thing, perhaps the honorable Cardinal forgot that when God created man, He gave him a very FREE WILL. And because of this gift, GOD himself cannot contradict what he has given freely. For to contradict his very creation would be tantamount of contradicting Himself. A GOD cannot negate himself. Let every Filipino utilize this God's gift of FREE WILL. Because even GOD himself, even with his POWER cannot impose his will upon man. GOD gave us a choice. To choose good or to choose evil. Cardinal please let the Filipino use the gift of FREE WILL.

does GOD gave us FREEWILL to do bad?

I am sorry to tell you my CAPTAIN is a very big YES! I would like to advice you to look for the definition of FREE WILL in the context of philosophy.

Why is the world full of bad people? FREE WILL is what make us rational. You are free to choose to do anything under the sun!

Paranoid ka cardinal Sanchez. Nobody is threatening or destroying your church.

Hindi lahat ng Pilipino ay katoliko. Baguhin mo attitude mo. Don't behave as if everyone is heeding your call.

Poor Jose Cardinal Sanchez. If you really believe in God, then you must know that God gave you a brain, right? And if you're not using that brain properly, is that not an insult to him?

JCS: "It is too much politics now and no longer religion."

That is because he is a politician serving the state, father. That is his job designation. It is not within his line of duty to retrofit an entire country simply to adhere to the BIASED, SHORT-SIGHTED and NAIVE morality of the Catholic Church. He is supposed to serve the incontrovertible morality of basic human rights. He was, after all, elected by the people. And just in case you haven't realized it yet, father. Not all Filipinos are Catholic. And even if they were, that does not justify the alienation of other religions or secularism because the country itself is still part of this thing called PLANET EARTH. And PLANET EARTH is not for you to conquer.

JCS: "[I came back to the country from Rome to ward off the] "tendencies that threaten to destroy the Catholic Church."

What's the matter father? Finally realizing that even the Vatican itself has no power over Europe so you decided to take on the little fish--the poor countries that have always been smitten by the band aid solutions of the Catholic Church? Well guess what, father? We INDIOS may be poor in a lot of things but we are no longer that poor in spirit. Nor are we poor in knowledge and dignity.

This is not the same Philippines met by your kind during the first time you came here with a cross on one hand and a blade in the other. We are beginning to think for ourselves. We are beginning to look beyond the MANY LIMITATIONS of the Bible, as God would want us to since he gave us a brain, in order to see the real problem. And guess what we discovered, you and your kind are part of it.

As for the so called problems that you came here to fix, we do not need the same hands that created them in order to solve them. Trust me, you'd be better off trying to solve problems in your own backyard; that is of course if you can find it in you to look beyond your antiquated doctrine to discover what is really wrong in your system.

JCS: "If there are bills contradictory to the Catholic teachings, I would go to these congressmen one by one to enlighten them with the Catholic teachings and they would easily agree with me. And as friends, they would find it hard to go against the bishop,"

And look at how well our country is right now, father. Poor children cannot go to school because they have to work in order to aid their parents in feeding them and their numerous siblings. Poor parents continue to copulate ceaselessly because your "fertility awareness method" has been working so well (I wish you can see me roll my eyes.) Meanwhile, the lack of proper knowledge regarding sexual health continues to worsen that problem.

Should we thank you for that, father?

JCS: "The world is changing, and the evil doesn't stop."

I agree. But do you know what the true evils of humanity are? Some of them include IGNORANCE and FEAR. Those are just some of the things that have been fostered by the Catholic Church's penchant for meddling in the affairs of the state since the time of Rizal.

And as for the "charm offensive" father, the only CHARM the Catholic Church has left recently jumped head first to its death from the pulpit after you dared to put you placed your faulty traditions before the welfare of the people.

Honestly speaking, the priests nowadays are more political than the politicians themselves. The priest in my church and in other churches I have been to talk about politics, each and every mass I have attended. Sometimes it gets too irritating to the ear that sometimes I have the urge to walk out of the church during sermons.
      • Give Me a Break 1 year 1 month ago
@Indio: Very well said. Good point regarding the Catholic Church focusing on poor countries. As history has shown us, religious brainwashing is prevalent in poor nations. I'm not surprised. When a country loses its ability to take care of its own people, it loses its ability to maintain its dignity. And those who don't have that are easily susceptible to lies, superstitious beliefs and the fear of the unknown--some of the greatest weapons used by religions to corrupt the morality of the people. Look at Uganda.

Here in the Philippines, you have people nailing themselves to the cross, killing themselves for a statue and do all sorts of religious "sacrifices" just so they can improve their lives. They are doing this instead of educating themselves or simply focusing on being good human beings.

And yes. I do believe that being good and being religious are two different things.

I really wonder why are you guys pushing the RH bill. Is the bill really needed to control the population? How much percentage do we have that the Philippines will be a lot better country if RH bill passed?

There are a lot of bills already in effect, they said that its for the betterment of the country. But the real thing is, its for the growth of their own pocket not ours.

RH bill, another form of Corruption.

RH bill is not opposed by church para lalong maghirap ang tao. It is opposed because the church doesn't want that the people be more sinful.

A lot of peoples money and time are already wasted in this bill.

      • melvin manuel 1 year 1 month ago
Why are you equating the RH Bill with contraceptives? You mean all the provisions of the RH Bill are all contraceptives? Basahin nyo nga muna ang bill in its entirety before you oppose.
      • Mvector 1 year 1 month ago
"They" are actually using the RH Bill issue as a staging point for assassinating the country's primary religion. Once they get rid of the church, morality will degenerate, like in the "first-world" western cultures, then it will be easier to implement an artificial government dogma - and of course from no less than a puppet government controlled by western powers. It's called subversion.
      • Captain 1 year 1 month ago

Hindi ba pwedeng mag Information Dissemination without this bill?

Bakit kaya?
    • Dina  •  1 year 1 month ago

"increase the governments income?"

"too much politics?" -- yes. because the church keeps on releasing these statements that meddle in affairs of state

"I did not come here to fight the RH Bill. I came here to protect the Catholic doctrine." -- and yet all your actions speak to the contrary.

old priests, cardinals and bishops are some of the most arrogant people i have ever seen. in fact, all people of the cloth try to put the fear of the lord in you but do so by trying to act like gods.

this must how Jose Rizal must have felt like during his time. DAMASO has RETURNED with a VENGANCE!

Honestly, my faith in Pres. Aquino is starting to wane. I have also yet to fully read all the details of the RH Bill so I will pass on giving any opinion about it. But for this Cardinal to judge the President and say that he has been all about politics recently and nothing about religion anymore is a lot of @#$%. Cardinal Sanchez, excuse me, but start dropping all your fantasies about having a Roman Catholic Republic. It never happened and it ain't gonna happen anymore. The President is not out to serve just one religion nor does it need any more religion bullies.

Philippine society must start to learn to free itself from the chains of religion. It has no place in public, government and in any laws. We must start to learn to keep our faith and our religion to ourselves, as it is no one's business but our own. How else can we learn to respect the individuality of a person when there are prayers recited in non-Catholic/Christian schools, as well as religious statues in malls, stores and buildings, On a recent trip to Palawan, I rode a ferry that started off with a Catholic prayer on a blaring speaker before sailing out to sea. Total disrespect when you are forcing and shoving down your beliefs on those whose religion is different than yours.

When can we really achieve a secular state? At the rate this Church is going, perhaps never.

I think the priests doesn't really understand what the bible says, I'm only 17 and I'm tired of hearing about the church getting involved in politics, religions should be neutral when it comes to political means. and yes, I understand that the RH Bill is somehow against the christian doctrine, but let us keep in mind what the bible says on 1 Timothy 5: 8 "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." Sex should be done after marriage, since hindi na uso sa panahon natin ngayon iyon, then it would be better for now to support RH Bill.

i studied in catholic schools since grade 1 until i graduated college.
      2 greatest gifts from God.
. 1 is our Savior, Jesus Christ.
      .. 2 is free will.
my religion mentors would always cite examples of how we use the gift of free will.. this means not being coerced to do what the other party or another person's ideas but being responsible for the choice made and that ultimately we should always apply the teaching off the Lord is making our decisions or using that free will.
currently, the local church leaders are dictating to the policy-makers and imposing their line of thinking instead of letting the christians know the spiritual value of the RH bill as against the fast growing population and scarce resources of our lands. thereby, guiding the christian populace to be morally and spiritually defined.

people should not talk about things that they don't understand. and the last time i checked, the catholic church is still run by people. so maybe priests and nuns should leave discussions about marriage, sex and birth control to those who actually experience them.
