Bangkok (The Nation/ANN) - A former graphic designer turned furniture maker comes up with some great spacesaving ideas.
Anyone looking for furniture to jazz up a new home knows they'll likely find what they're after at the Crystal Design Centre in Bangkok. A popular choice whether to browse or buy is The Foundry, which offers smart wooden furniture as well as attractive stationery from aboard.
It first opened at the Crystal Park shopping centre in 2008 but moved to a new location in Bangkok in March. The store belongs to talented graphic designer Kanit Tantivejakul, who started out by making wooden furniture for his office a few years ago and like it so much that he decided to set up his own brand.
His designs emphasise simplicity of form and functionality. He uses quality pine, ash and the wood from rubber trees both from Europe and home as his main materials. The wood comes in natural shades as well as in vivid green, orange, yellow, blue, red, pink, prey, black, and white.
"My designs are simple and attractive and all my furniture is functional," says Kanit, an alumnus of Rhode Island School of Design in the US. "I prefer to use ash and pinewood as my main materials because they have unique grain, durability and they're reasonably priced."
His shop is home to a smart chair that comes with drawers, a cute bench that can convert into a huge storage box, a customised desk, adjustable, fixed and foldable legs, desk mirrors, drawers, cabinets, full-size mirrors, shoe cabinets, stackable storage trunks, steps, towel racks, cloth racks, book shelves and beds.
There's also a corner stocked with innovative stationery and office supplies imported from Japan by such popular brands as Midori, Kum, Lyra and Linit Lab. There are staplers, clutch pencils, pens, highlights, coloured pencils, scale rulers, erasers, binder balls, paper clips, card holders, chalks, Olfa-touch knives and document boxes.
For anyone has a design in mind, the store also accepts custom-made orders.
