20 Feb – Mexican soap opera heartthrob Gael García Bernal is Fox's choice to play the Spanish swordsman, Zorro, in a reboot of the beloved franchise, to be titled "Zorro Reborn", according to Movie Web.
The reboot would take place in a futuristic era as opposed to its previous films, which are set in colonial California and Mexico. The actor would play the masked vigilante bent on revenge in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Previously, the titular role was made famous by Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. Both "The Mask Of Zorro" and "The Legend Of Zorro" were directed by Martin Campbell, although it remains to be seen if Campbell will return for "Zorro Reborn".
The new film is written by Glenn Gers with help from Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, but nevertheless, the project is still in early development and is currently looking for a director. However, Fox's reboot is not the only "Zorro" film in development. Sony is also developing an origin story about the Mexican American hero based on Isabel Allende's 2005 novel simply called "Zorro".
"Zorro Reborn" will see release in theaters in 2013.
