Guimaras home to 21 migratory bird species

THE Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) in Guimaras, under the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC), recently recorded a total of 21 migratory bird species in five identified sites in the province.

According to Guimaras Penro officer Jesse L. Vego, his office conducted a sampling in January 26-28 in five identified sites of Barangay San Antonio in the municipality of Nueva Valencia; Barangays Alegria and Sabang in the municipality of Sibunag; Barangay Suclaran in the municipality of San Lorenzo; and Barangay Getulio in the municipality of Buenavista.

The result of this year’s waterfowl census in the island-province totaled to 2,792, posting an increase of 489 percent, compared to last year’s data of only 570. The census showed 581 little egrets and 495 cattle egrets.

Other species recorded include common tern, striated heron, grey plover, common sandpiper, barred rail, red shank, and black winged stilt, among others.

Vego said the migratory birds in the island prefer the identified wetlands of the province.

He said the birds’ presence poses tourism potentials for the province. (Lydia C. Pendon)

My two daughters and i were there at a beach resort in Nueva Valencia last month during the birthday on one of them. My daughters are avid bird watchers. Maganda ang lugar at yung mga ibon masiglang umaaligid, naghahanap ng isdang makakain habang naliligo kami sa dagat. Yung mga ibon parang naging people-watchers din. Ha, ha!

i have never seen any local news about nature conservancy, biodiversity, and remaining natural wonders without the attached "pagkakaperahan" aspect and for profit factor (re: tourism).

Why they didn't mention about the parrot?
The bird with an attitude of a cat likes to migrate in a strong political party every election.
