Icy trip for tourists as HK cable car stalls

Hong Kong suspended its popular cable car on Thursday after a malfunction left hundreds of tourists dangling in icy weather during the Chinese New Year holiday.

Around 800 passengers were left hanging in the air in temperatures below three degrees Celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit) after the cable car broke down Wednesday for the fourth time in six weeks, an official said.

A spokeswoman for the state-run Ngong Ping 360 said a decision was made to stop the 5.7-kilometre (3.5-mile) system because the haul rope was "not operating smoothly".

Passengers were stranded in the gondolas for more than 30 minutes.

"It was freezing cold up there, and the wind was blowing hard. We did not know what happened and there was no announcement or anything," one furious passenger was quoted as saying by The Standard newspaper.

Another told the South China Morning Post: "It was like we were sitting in a fridge, not knowing what was going on. All we could see was fog and rain. Our holiday has been spoiled now."

The company refunded ticket holders. An adult round-trip fare costs $HK125 ($15).

The company spokeswoman said operations would be suspended for 10 days from Thursday while checks were carried out to remedy the recurring problem.

haha i just took the ngong ping cable car on Tuesday, two days before this news broke out. and trust me it is freaking cold now in Hong Kong. The whole cable car journey is about 25minutes. Cannot imagine swaying in the cable car and waiting for people to come save me when the height is so high.

Fortunately the gondolas did not drop as they swayed in the strong winds. Years ago the cable car to Sentosa dropped and killed some people. Never took cable car since.

As reported, the cable car system broke down 4 times in 6 weeks and that is considered as quite a number of breakdowns. Now see whether the "head" responsible for the operation of the cable car system in HK will be subject to strong criticism because of the frequent breakdowns just like our MRT systems breakdowns recently experienced and eventually forced to resign. If no resignation reported, this means that the HK government handles the situation very well and credit should be given to their PR work. If that happens, perhaps its a lesson worth learning from HK.

I've always hated this when I was a kid. It was probably because of the feeling of helplessness and lack of control. With this malfunction, a new generation of cable car haters have been born.

I'm glad that did not happened when we were at ngong ping 360.That was in fall when we went there.I just can't imagine spending half an hour more up those cars with my family in the icy weather.Kids might panic.
Specially when your in the see through glass floor cars. This cars had holes in the sides where the cold wind would pass.Well at least that's the only thing that happened and the car did not collapsed.Thank god.
