Incoming high school freshmen to become Grade 7 next year

The Department of Education (DepEd) will implement the K+12 basic education program in academic year 2012-2013, starting with the conversion of first year high school to Grade 7.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said a curriculum had been created for Grade 7.

The K+12 basic education plan consists of kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grade 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school.

“In 2012, we will begin using the new curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 7 (first year of junior high school),” Luistro said in a forum at the Heritage Hotel the other day.

“The curriculum is almost complete for these two levels and we will soon begin preparing our teachers.”

He said that after the initial implementation, the department will continue to work on the “building blocks” of the program which are: Curriculum Transition Management, Financial Resources, Legal Framework.

“We will also continue our consultations so everyone can understand the need for reform,” he said.

DepEd will also address the deficiencies in the public kindergarten schools established this school year.

The K+12 program is a revision of the 10-year basic education system implemented in the country that consists of six years of elementary education and four years of high school. The new program was designed to meet the fast-changing demands of society by providing students with adequate skill needed for college education and employment.

It is expected to fill in the deficiencies and strengthen students’ competencies in core subjects such as English, Math and Science.

The Philippines is only one of two countries in the world — the other is Myanmar — that still implements a 10-year basic education system.

Because of this, foreign employers question the competency of Filipino professionals especially engineers, accountants and nurses. (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

This actually is a good thing. People who don't see it as a good thing has a crab mentality. Please, having a K-12 program actually increases the literacy and allows highschool graduates to be able to have a stable job, unlike now where only there are small chances that highschool graduates can have a stable job.

And please, PNoy doesn't have anything to do with this implementation. It was preplanned before with President GMA. If you want to whine, go to DepEd, not the President.

it also depends on the quality of teachers and how the final framework will be. DepEd should carefully monitor the implementation for the first year so that they can address what's lacking in the program and improve it the next year. Ideally, K+12 is really something that will increase the competency of our labor force. :)

      This is a farce.

Of the many things that are needed to improve the quality of education for Filipinos, this is not one of them. Adding another two years of time spent in the "drone factories" that qualify as Philippine schools is not a solution.

Rather than spending the extra money to support an additional 2 years of school for every Filipino student, why not use that money to re-train educators?

The problem is the QUALITY of the education Filipinos are receiving -- which is directly correlated to the salaries provided to the educators. The best educators leave the country to go abroad -- even to work as nurses, etc -- because the pay offered to teachers who remain here is little more than a joke. Even private schools outside of Luzon offer teachers something like 12,500PHP / month. With salaries this low, the best educators are leaving in droves -- which leaves the "rest" to teach our children.

This results in what we have now -- schools are little more than "drone factories" -- producing students who merely memorize facts and figures, in order to pass the exams in their respective fields. Students who graduate with a degree in Law should not have to attend a "Review Center" to pass the bar exam AFTER STUDYING LAW FOR FOUR YEARS. The same applies to nursing, education, and every other field.

The fact that students must attend these "Review Centers" is a gross indication that the QUALITY of education in Filipino schools is sub-standard. Spending public funds on an additional two years of the same low-standard education is an insult to the Filipino.

the k+12 system is a good idea but this time is not the right time to implement this kind of system since the facilities of most schools, especially public schools, are not enough to accommodate the additional levels. I think that the government should be able to provide the students with books, school supplies and convenient facilities before they implement this curriculum. Anyway, I respect their decision. This is just my opinion.God bless...hope they realize what they've done.

the government is just tolerating human export. makisabay ba sa ibang bansa. so what if we have a 10-year schooling? ain't that enough for kids to learn? bukod sa eskwelahan, sa bahay nag-aaral din mga estudyante, majority if not all. ini-inject kase sa mga estudyante mag-aral, grumaduate at maging OFW, leche..!

Hence, you cannot really that that education in the Philipiines is incompetent in comparison with that of the other countries.

kung gagawin nyo yan, bawasan nyo yung sa college level gawing 2 or 3 years lang, alisin ang mga subjects na di naman kelangan sa propesyon or kursong kinukuha kagaya ng mga minor subjects,...

kahit dagdagan mo pa ng ilang taon yan, kung hindi naman naaabsorb ng estudyante ang lahat ng pinag-aaralan, wala rin.. well, if i were them (government officials), "teacher upgrade" sana ang ipapa-implement ko.. if there were just good books, and new methods of teaching, baka sakaling tumaas pa ang literacy rate at bumaba ang out-of-school-youth.

second, pag-akyat ng estudyante ng higher level, pero yung pinag-aaralan nila is just the same as the lessons from the previous levels, NONSENSE..

The best solution actually to be added in the constitution for better education? That it is required to the children and niece and nephews to be enrolled in public schools. That way, the public schools will improve. Let them WALK THE TALK!

Additional budget to ask for.... Approved so quickly..... URGENT justification to ask for new funds.... for the department.....

NAKAPAGTAPOS KA NGA HINDI NAMAN QUALIFIED. nonesense right? napaka pessimist kasi nating mga pilipino eh. kaya lalo tayong nababaon . who wants to become a factory worker anyway? you studied for four years in tertiary level tpos san ka? SM sales lady ? duh.

(sighs) How about making the economy grow? What about Giving Funds to the public schools to give them more textbooks, chairs and other materials that they need? Not because na nahuhuli tayo dapat na tayo sumunod. Take a look we are not yet ready for this..But if I have the SLIGHTEST statement to say that is like:

A person that will go to work without shoes on.....
