University of the Philippines outsteadied National University, 4-3, to stay unbeaten in the men's division of the UAAP Season 75 taekwondo tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Fighting Maroons continued their surprising run in the three-day meet by posting a 4-0 record.
Victories by UP over University of the East and La Salle on Tuesday will give the Diliman-based jins the championship.
La Salle, on the other hand, stunned defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 5-2, to stay second with a 4-1 record, matching UST's win-loss mark.
Meantime, Ynah Langit overpowered Marivic Garcia in their middle-heavy duel to help power La Salle to a 4-3 win over defending champion FEU and onto the cusp of glory in the women's side last Friday.
The win enabled the Lady Archers to extend their win run to five matches and need just a win over University of the Philippines on Tuesday to annex their fifth championship.
FEU dropped to second place at 3-1.
In men's play, titleholder University of Santo Tomas boosted its stock with a 6-1 thumping of tournament newcomer National University to remain unbeaten in three games.
UP matched UST's record by defeating Ateneo, 5-2, while La Salle nosed out University of the East, 4-3, for its third win in four starts.
