Kenneth Cobonpue's bamboo and rattan car "a big hit" in Milan

(SPOT.ph) Filipino furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue told Manila Bulletin that his Phoenix, the world's first and only car made from bamboo and rattan, was a "big hit" in Milan, Italy. It was showcased at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile during the Milan Design Week earlier this month.

According to Manila Bulletin, the Phoenix does not have an engine yet but it has caught the eye of the car industry. Cobonpue's managing partner in the US, Christopher Reiter, told Manila Bulletin that a visitor from Mercedes Benz was "amazed" by the design.

Reiter said, "He found the whole concept of a car made of bamboo and rattan so raw and yet so rich in terms of design and sustainability. Two other leading car manufacturers are also interested to pursue a collaborative project with Kenneth."  According to Manila Bulletin, Consul General Lourdes Soliman Tabamo lauded Cobonpue's work. In an intimate dinner she hosted in Milan for Cobonpue and his staff, she said, "This is a moment of national pride for all of us."

Manila Bulletin quoted Cobonpue as saying, "I am very pleased with the feedback from everyone who came to visit our booth and saw the intricacy of the craftsmanship and the genius of the Filipino design."

Inquirer.net likened the Phoenix to a sleek bird posed to take flight. "It has a (vertebra) or spine that runs to the rear where it forms into a splay of rattan bundled with LED (Light Emitting Diode) rods to emit light; that's the tail light. The rear is also the space for the car engine." It took months to design the Phoenix, and 10 days to build it in Cobonpue's factory in Cebu.

Whether it was his furniture used in the movie set of Ocean 11 or the personal bed of Brad Pitt, I take off my hat to Kenneth. With Monique Lhuillier's rising fame as a couturier to Hollywood stars, this duo must make every Filipino proud ... much more their fellow Cebuanos. Bravo ... Mabuhi !!!

I hope that our government will start supporting Filipino inventors. They should look on BIOGAS as an alternative fuel. Comes from waste materials - processed to cheap, clean and environmental friendly fuel.

i agree, pero i doubt, philippines government will not allow that to happen, kc mostly sa kanila ay mga kurakot..pera lang katapat ng mga yan, they will vote for NO na..

That's sad...
      • boohoo 23 days ago
posible yan,, yun lang patataasin nila yung presyo tapos sa kurakot mapupunta karamihan nun tapos idadahilan mahal yung equipment para ma i-mass produce yung biogas

I am glad that our invention made in rattan is being noticed, but i am saddened that our rattan industry is dying dahil nakakalbo na ang ating mga kagubatan, marami ang gumagamit nang rattan pero halos walang nagtatanim ang sinusunog pa ang karamihan dahil Kinakaingin nila.. lalo na dito sa Agusan del Sur, noon marami pang rattan dahil malawak pa ang mga kagubatan dito, pero sa ngayon kokonti nalang kasi na ka convert na ang mga lupain dito, may DENR nga pero patuloy parin ang walang habas na pamumutol ng mga puno including rattan at pag KaKAINGIN... kulang ang environmental awareness ng gobyerno para ipamulat sa mga kababayan natin dito na magtira naman ng mga virgin forests dito kasi unti-unti na talagang nakakalbo ang mga kagubatan dito na kung saan karamihan sa ating rattan industry ay dito kumukuha ng raw supply :(

nakakatawa mga kumento d2,. puro off topic., bakit ba laging ine-entra ang gobyerno?, laging sinisisi?.,ako hindi rin ako bilib sa gibyerno pero hindi ko inaasa sa lahat sa gobyero., nakkatawa kung makapagkumento yung iba,. napaka nega., akala mo kung sinong perpekto. sabi nga nung isang nagcomment d2, bago mo sisihin ang gobyerno eh tgnan mo muna ang mga kamalian mo., sa tingin nyo ba makakatulong yung mga kumento nyo sa ikauunlad ng bayan??., sa tingin nyo ba eh mababasa ng mga government officials mga comments nyo?, naku, wala silang pakielam jan., kung ako senyo, ishare nyo to sa mga FB accounts nyo para mas maraming bumilib sa mga pilipinong inventor.,atlis dun makakatulong kau., hehe! for sure maraming magdidislike sa comment ko, pero what i have said is a fact., walang pakielam yung gobyerno sa mga comments nyo haha! peace!

This is what I have been talking about all along!

Our INVENTORS should be taken care of by our government BETTER than the athletes! Inventors are people who can make a BIG DIFFERENCE in our economy in many respects. The athletes are only good for national and international boasting, apart from the personal satisfaction of the athletes themselves and the sports buffs, drain the resources of company-sponsors and the government, and make many people waste their otherwise very valuable time as they get glued to their TV sets watching the games.

susunod niyang design car made in capiz, or sigay or sea shell.... these designs are for visuals only. cars cant be made entirely of bamboo and rattan and fitted with gasoline or diesel engines. these cars will melt (deform and bend) due to engine heat before reaching their destinations.

If you fit them with electric or hybrid engines, the car will easily cost more than a million.... what kind of an idiot will pay an arm and a limb for a vehicle made from cheap materials and not provide a safe and comfortable ride?
