MANILA, Philippines - LAUGHING MATTER: What is show business without the laughs, courtesy of some of its denizens, not as part of a script but as episodes lifted freely from real life?

Long before reality TV shows became in vogue, we had been laughing at some of our favorite celebrities' quotable quotes. Let's remember some of them.

"My brother is not a book." Miss International Melanie Marquez let out this unforgettable line as she tried to defend her brother, comedian Joey Marquez, at the height of Kris Aquino's declaration that he had passed on to her sexual transmitted disease.

Melanie had meant to infer the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover" when she uttered such a line on TV.

In the same line of defense, Melanie theorized that her kuya might have contracted his STD from using dirty public toilets.

The towering Melanie, a fashion model and actress at the same time, is also credited with this other famous quote: "No, of course, no. Because I am proud and contented with my long legged."

The beauty queen replied so when pageant host, the late Eddie Mercado, asked her if she was willing to insure her legs for 2 million dollars, just like Hollywood actress Angie Dickinson, did.

QUOTABLE QUOTES: In an article entitled "Cute na Quotes," from the souvenir program of the 27th Luna Awards of the Film Academy of the Philippines, Tess Clarin went down memory lane by recounting what Alma Moreno asked singer Joey Albert when the latter guested on her TV variety show, "Loveli-Ness."

"Pakiulit mo nga 'yung concert mo sa University of Belt," Alma rushed.

Clarin went on to remember other funny anecdotes involving the rich and famous. On Joe Quirino's "Seeing Stars" TV program, the late TV host asked Sharon Cuneta: "Sharon, are you familiar with the problems we have in the film industry?"

Sharon's reply was, "Naku, Tito Joe, I'm afraid not."

Turning to his next guest, who happened to be sexy actress Myra Manibog, JQ asked, "What about you, Myra?"

Without batting an eyelash, Myra snapped back, "Naku, Tito Joe, I'm afraid also."

Other popular lines spoken in public TV and attributed to actors, singers, athletes, and assorted celebrities include:

"The ball is around:" By basketball player Fortunato "Atoy" Co, when asked by Joe Cantada what he thought led to his team Crispa's winning a very close game.

"Opo nga, mabilis siya, but you know, I ran and I fast:" By Lydia de Vega after beating PT Usha of India in the 1984 Asian Games.

"Ilang taon ka na ngayon, Janice?" The line is credited to starlet Ana Margarita Gonzales, daughter of '50s matinee idol Jose Mari, while interviewing Janice de Belen, who was then celebrating her debut on the TV show, "Germspecial."

"Buhay pa ba siya?" Such a line elicited wild laughter from all over when Dionisia Pacquiao blurted it out when the subject of a TV interview touched on her idol, Jukebox Queen Imelda Papin.

The innocent remark led to a recording collaboration on the song, "Bakit (Kung Liligaya Ka sa Piling ng Iba)," between Imelda and "Mommy" Dionisia.

In my family, a younger sister is known for her comic timing and sense of humor. Caught by surprise by her elementary school teacher that her report card had not been signed by either parent or guardian, she blurted without batting an eyelash, "I'm sorry, Ma'am, but I forgot to sign my uncle!"

The line has since become famous throughout our small town, a favorite joke told again and again at every reunion.
