Lea Salonga joins Ayala Alabang residents in another rally to protest condom ordinance

Broadway star Lea Salonga, who has openly opposed the ordinance,  joined the Ayala Alabang rallyists. Click for more photos.

It was the same scene two weeks ago, rallyists dressed in yellow with placards protesting the passage of a barangay ordinance that regulates the purchase, sale and promotion of condoms and other moderns forms of contraception. Only this time they were angrier, noisier and demanding.

Storming the gates of the uber posh Ayala Alabang Village, rallyists were vigorously waving signs.  Words that were previously only spoken in angered whispers or "shouted out" in the realm of Facebook, were now brandished in bold red letters: "I am a citizen of the Philippines, not Alabangistan!" read one placard. "AAV = Alliance Against Vaginas" read another placard, giving another meaning to the acronym of the village name. "Get bigots out of our bedrooms!" cried another. Other posters asked those passing by to show their support by honking their horns. And they had every right to be angry.

Since the last demonstration that coincided with the second public hearing on the controversial ordinance last March, there has been no word from the Barangay Council if they were going to repeal the ordinance which was rejected by the City Council and later declared as unconstitutional by various local government agencies.

"Wala pa kaming balita sa barangay council kung ano ang gagawin nila," said former DOH Secretary and Alabang resident, Esperanza Cabral."Hindi dapat pa patagalin ito." Cabral has been leading the efforts among the anti-ordinance group in the village.

Broadway star Lea Salonga, who openly opposed the ordinance said, "We live in a democracy and this is simply not right. Maigiging public record ang pabgili ng condoms at kahit ng pills na pwede naman hindi lang pang-contraception, pwedeng pang treat ng ovarian syndrome, magiging public record. It simply is not right." Salonga said she would have joined the previous demonstrations, but was out of the country.

Raoul, the 27- year-old resident whose attempt to buy condoms last March from a drugstore in Alabang Town Center was secretly captured on video, also revealed himself. "I'm an example of who this ordinance directly affects. I'm going to have to go to my doctor and get a prescription for condoms. And how will I even say it, "Doc I'm going out on a date and it might work out."? It's just crazy."

Despite a statement from Barangay Captain Xerex Burgos that the ordinance was not be implemented as it had not yet secured the approval of the City Council, condom sales are being regulated. This was validated by Raoul. "Just three days ago, I tried to buy condoms at the Rustan's supermarket inside the village and they wouldn't let me. Bawal daw." Raoul also explained that condoms were at the back and not accessible without the assistant of a pharmacist.

"We want a resolution to this already," added Cabral who said that since the March 19 rally, not yet had been done by the Barangay Council—not even an update. When asked about being prepared for the worst and the ordinance being kept in effect, Cabral said, "They cannot not repeal that. And if they don't then we will just keep on doing this," Cabral concluded.

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

Eukeh, I have a question. Does that mean that you need to have the fear of hell for you to be motivated to do good things? In my case, I just try to avoid doing bad things because I don't want to be a jerk. I don't need to be subject to fear just to be able to do that.

        1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 ESVFor this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

Yvy, sige I challenge you to give proof of your "god". Of course stupid people won't get it. Just like when Galileo said that the earth revolves around the sun; or when Magellan said that the earth is round, people have accused them as heretics. Turns out they were right, just like I am right.

The Bible calls premarital sex “fornication.” It is SIN Against God Almighty! It is repeatedly condemned in Scripture along with all other forms of sexual immorality (Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:13,18; 10:8; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Jude 7). The Bible promotes abstinence before marriage as the standard of godliness. Sex before marriage is just as wrong as adultery and other forms of sexual immorality because they all involve having sex with someone other than your spouse...
so,if what God says matter to you.do not buy condoms! save your virginity up until your honeymoon! you wont regret it. that means you Honor God and your Wife or husband.. --God bless!

here is the government finally doing something with one of our greatest problem in our country and even the whole world and here you are with your post with your very verse-full of post, how about you think of what the government is trying to solve, have you figured that out yet? if you did, are you against it? so for now, thumbs down for you, i hope you can tell me what the problem is. btw, here is a verse for you Genesis 19:31-36, what does this promote in your learned brain, tell me i want to know, here is your chance to educate me, thanks in advance. but i will be waiting...

to raffy, that's a good one, it made me almost fall down from my chair in lol, and i must emphasize that that is a typical christian or catholic mentality to be so "large" in their mind they think everything is really about them, this is what i call religious arrogance, and it is a very obious consequence of the teachings,i mean "the universe is created just for you", who would not be...
      • Ibang Klase Ka Talaga 1 year 1 month ago
to raffy and davaoena, i see good but slow progress here, let me reiterate, cq is my account, i made a mistake of using it and those are my opinions also, so we seem to know the part of the problem. raffy, you seemingly made a point about a certain verse, why don't you expound on that, let us be educated in your "theory" that davaoena seemingly agrees with also, and what is the solution you think? what do you think the problem: just overpopulation? solutions: just condoms? that's it? that's all our collective brains can think about?

FOR ME... SIMPLE LANG... ABSTINENCE IS GOOD THING TO DO. WHY MAKE CONDOM A BIG DEAL. TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO FIND SEX LIKE EATING CANDIES WILL SURELY DISAGREE ABOUT REQUIRING A PRESCRIPTION FOR CONDOMS. WE ALL KNOW THAT SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE IS A SIN AND THEREFORE IS HARMFUL TO BOTH THE MAN AND THE WOMAN. IF MANY FILIPINOS DISAGREE TO THIS LAW WELL THEN OBVIOUSLY WE FILIPINOS ALREADY LOST OUR MORALS AND VALUES. THINK OF THE BRIGHTER SIDE OF IT... It actually helps us avoid from sin, it minimizes STD's (for no one is trying to play around- coz we're aware of the consequences of multiple sex), and people in relationship who abstained from sex before marriage can really tell that they can be trusted and can be considered as the right person for lifetime. For Women who do sex with different partners are usually being dumped and can not have a serious and meaningful relationship with a men. And men who do sex with multiple partners are scary and there is a tendency that they might do the same thing once they are married. SO THINK ABOUT IT!

Non-OTC drugs are prescribed because of the potential harmful side-effects and adverse reactions to humans. Such prescription is made to promote safety of those taking such drugs. But hey!....Condoms?..... unless otherwise when you have allergies to rubbers/latex..I don't think there is a bad necessity for the prescription of rubbers....

How then the prescription would like? ....RX CONDOM (BRAND NAME) # 24....WEAR 3 TIMES A DAY BEFORE SEX FOR 7 DAYS AND PRN (AS NEEDED) .

I simply think this ordinance will just PRACTICALLY INCREASE the incidence of STDs and UNWANTED PREGNANCIES and ultimately ABORTION....

If you need a prescription for a condom then why not ask for a prescription for cigarettes or liquor as well. Heck why don't you require a prescription for non-organic food while you're at it.

There is no point debating as to whether the constitution has been breached or not, Well, in my opinion, it was not breached in any way.
The church did not made this law, As i understood, this "Condom issue" is a decision made final by law officials, not the church. Perhaps, the church have influenced the said decision, but still, the government official have the final say. It just so happens that we are living in a religious country so church indirectly affects our law, but, it is not a breach of constitution to be influential.
Now to the law that says "Condoms should be prescribed by doctors", I don't see any reason to raise anger. People hated that ordinance because they are too shy to go to the doctor and say, "Doc, i'm going to have premarital sex and i need you to allow me to do that by giving me a prescription" or "Doc, I need a prescription for condom because I am going to cheat on my spouse". It is really shameful if your reason for buying condoms is not valid, but then, if you have medical condition, or you wan't to exercise family planning which is allowed by law, i don't think you should be ashamed to ask for prescription. This ordinance somewhat prevents teenagers to engage in premarital sex, There is nothing wrong with that.

Pambihira yan! anong kalokohan yan? what if there is unexpected case that you go out with someone and ended up in a motel? ano sabihin mo sa partner mo, "saglit ha, papareseta lang ako ng condom kay doc" this is stupid.... dito sa taiwan lahat ng motel may mga condom na available at free pa. at higit sa lahat 2 pa ha... anong kagaguhan yang kailangan ipareseta pa ang condom? lalo nyo lang paparamihin ang aids nyan....

"We live in a democracy and this is simply not right. Maigiging public record ang pagbili ng condoms at kahit ng pills na pwede naman hindi lang pang-contraception, pwedeng pang treat ng ovarian syndrome, magiging public record. It simply is not right." - Lea Salonga.

She's right in every sense of the word.

Religion shouldn't interfere with matters of the state.

When people cite biblical standards and moral grounds based on personal beliefs and put it into laws and ordinances (a case such as this comes to mind) for everyone to follow or face sanctions, that is pushing it too far.

Using intimidation through religious discourse only fans the fire.

I am from the UK but I have a pinay girlfriend. I find it incredible that the vatican has approved the use of condoms but the Philippines as a widely aknowledged roman catholic stronghold seems to have ideas which contravene the vatican?? But religion aside..... in a country which is so desperately poor and with an EXPLODING population......wouldnt you think the government would embrace ANY method to put an end to all the unwanted excess population?? We dont live in the dark ages now!!!! Women do not HAVE to get pregnant every time the boyfriend / husband / casual acquaintance wants sex!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!
    • carmencita  •  1 year 1 month ago
Tama! The condom prescription effectively fights the RH Bill. Sex (casual or serious) comes with modern age.
    • b  •  1 year 1 month ago

Sexual desire is a natural thing. Inherent, not only in humans, but in all living things. Controlling human urges/instincts would only spell trouble. Instead, teach the people HOW to be responsible for these urges. Very simple yet it escapes the mind of many religious people just because god told the people to go and populate the world, so they claim. The idea of pre-marital sex has been spread by the media. if their goal is to lessen the incidence of pre-marital sex, control the media. Remember back in the 50's, sex is not prevalent in media. See?

And this is just one of the many reasons why I left the country and am changing citizenships. I can no longer live in shame. Our country represented by the government has turned it's back on us. I don't see the point of continually serving it.
