18 Feb – There is no end to the praise that critics have for two-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, leading her to recently pick up a Golden Bear Lifetime Achievement Award at the Berlin Film Festival, although she described herself as an overrated actress.
According to GMA News, 63-year-old Streep claimed that there are better actresses than her as the bar for acting had been increasing in recent years.
"I do think that the level of acting in general, by which I mean that everybody keeps talking about the golden age of Hollywood, but I really think that the level of acting now is higher, deeper, more daring, more adventurous and (deeply) felt and edgy," said "The Iron Lady" star.
This was a justification for the 2012 Academy Award nominee's opinion that some of her peers' great performances were not being recognized accordingly by the Academy.
"This year, particularly for women, there have been so many wonderful performances, yet many of them were not even nominated, for instance our co-star Olivia Colman in a film called "Tyrannosaur" which is absolutely breathtaking and she has not been recognised for it," said Streep.
She added, "Anna Paquin made a film called "Margaret" that very few people have seen. Again, in any other year, it would have won every single award."
Regarding the speculations about her third Oscar, the actress said, "It's very odd to be in a position where people say to you, "Oh I think you're going to win something, oh I don't think you have a chance this year." Suddenly you feel like you're in a sporting event and you haven't signed up for it.
"Every year we focus on a certain number of awards because of the machinery and publicity and there are many others that deserve it and that's your [the reporters] job to publicise them and make noise about them," she elaborated.
Previously, Streep won the Best Actress Award for "Sophie's Choice" in 1982 and for Best Supporting Actress for "Kramer Vs Kramer" in 1979.
