  • Arevalo captures PCA Open crown

Manila Bulletin - Sunday, November 22

Former No. 1 Czarina Mae Arevalo proved she's still a force to reckon with by downing top seed Anna Christine Patrimonio, 6-2, 6-3, to clinch her fifth Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open crown at the PCA claycourts Sunday in Paco, Manila.

The fifth-seeded Arevalo leaned heavily on her powerful baseline game to dismantle the charming daughter of former PBA superstar, Alvin Patrimonio, and etch her name as the first five-time winner in the history of the event.
While the score sheet appeared to be a lopsided one, Arevalo needed one hour and 45 minutes to finally disarm Patrimonio.

Arevalo's victory was worth P50,000 top purse, but more than that, she erased the stigma of losing to Bambi Zoleta last year.

  • Mayol cops WBC title

Manila Bulletin - Sunday, November 22

Rodel Mayol averted what would have been a bleak weekend for Philippine boxing by winning back for the country the World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight title Sunday in Mexico.

Already in his fifth attempt at a world crown, the 28-year-old Mayol (26-4-1, 20 knockouts) snatched the belt via second round technical knockout (TKO) win over longtime champion Edgar Sosa (37-6, 21 KOs) in a bout held in the champion's turf of Chiapas, Mexico.

Mayol's WBC crown was last held by current International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight ruler Brian Viloria who lost to Mexican Omar Romero back in 2006.

The win avenged the defeats suffered by three Filipino challengers who battled Sosa, including Viloria whom he fought for the vacant title in 2007.

Sosa was making the 11th defense of his crown in a span of 28 months.

Mayol, who fights under MP Promotions owned by pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, initially hurt Sosa with an accidental head butt.

The Mexican then got up on wobbly legs after being floored by a clean right straight in the second round.

  • Pacquiao earns P1.3 billion

Manila Bulletin - Saturday, November 21

Here's one billion reasons why Manny Pacquiao should maximize his remaining potential earnings inside the ring.

Bob Arum, in a report by ESPN reveals Pacquiao will receive $22 million now that the official Pay-Per-View counting is about to be concluded.

Convert that to Philippine peso and that will translate to a whopping P1.3 billion based on yesterday's 46.8 peso-dollar rate.

Arum's estimation is based on an official HBO announcement that Pacquiao's latest win over Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto generated 1.25 million buys and $70 million in domestic revenues.

The report said the numbers would still slightly increase as all other buys have still to be officially audited.

  • Sonsona defends WBO title

Manila Bulletin - Saturday, November 21

Three Filipinos hope to add more glitter to an already glittery Philippine boxing landscape as they battle foreign foes in three world title bouts this Sunday in different territories.

World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona puts his title on the line when he faces beatable but still formidable Mexican Alejandro Hernandez at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.

With a record of 22 wins, seven losses, one draw and 11 stoppages, Hernandez has yet to be stopped as he went the full route in all those losses.

In his last outing two months ago in Mexico, the 23-year-old Hernandez lost a 12-round verdict to compatriot Wilbert Uicab for the Mexican flyweight crown.

His biggest fight happened September of last year where he gallantly fought but lost to undefeated WBO flyweight kingpin Omar Narvaez via 12-round decision right in the champion's turf of Argentina.

After winning the title, the 19-year-old Sonsona (14-0, 12 KOs) deservedly spent some time off in his hometown.
