Manila Bulletin - Friday, November 6

SHANGHAI, November 6, 2009 (AFP) - World number two Phil Mickelson is to open a golf academy in China as part of his plans to help develop the sport in the booming country.

The American said he was designing a par-3 course for children in Kunming to get them playing golf and would also have an academy there to nurture new talent.

"I'm designing a couple of projects here," he said on the sidelines of the WGC-HSBC Champions.

"One is in Kunming and the projects we are doing in Kunming are designed to help grow the game of golf.

"In Kunming we are putting a golf academy and we are putting a par-3 course where kids can enjoy and learn at the grassroots so that 25 years down the road we build support for the game of golf in China."

He has also produced an instructional DVD and book that will be translated into Mandarin.

Mickelson added that he has designed The World Course in Tianjin, his first project outside the United States, which is inspired by great holes from around the world.

  • Cotto: 'Pacquiao picked wrong foe'

Manila Bulletin - Friday, November 6

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Miguel Cotto has no qualms about being listed as the bookmakers' underdog for his WBO welterweight title defense against Filipino Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas next week.

The Puerto Rican, who has an enviable career record of 34-1 featuring 27 knockouts, is confident his power and meticulous preparation will trump Pacquiao's speed when the fighters clash on November 14.

"I don't know anything about the betting business," Cotto said on a conference call from his training camp in Las Vegas on Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) - The most powerful man in boxing is a Harvard-educated tax lawyer and a street-savvy businessman, a Talmudic scholar with a penchant for four-letter expletives.

He's been called generous and charming, ruthless and conniving, yet he's universally respected for spending the better part of five decades atop a pitiless sport.

"Bob Arum is one of the 10 smartest people I've ever met, not one of the 10 smartest boxing people I've met," says longtime HBO executive Seth Abraham, who has known Arum as both a businessman and friend.

  • 23 SEAG gold medalists return to defend crowns

Manila Bulletin - Friday, November 6

Twenty-three gold medalists in the 2007 Thailand Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) will have a chance to defend their crowns in this year's Laos Games slated this coming December.

The returning champions, according to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), will be bannered by multi-medalist swimmer Miguel Molina, who won four gold medals two years ago that earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Other RP bets out to defend their titles are swimmers Daniel Coakley, Ryan Arabejo and James Walsh, divers Shiela Mae Perez and Ryan Fabriga, boxer Annie Albania, taekwondo jin Tshomlee Go, Fil-Am netter Cecil Mamiit, and eight-time SEAG judo champion John Baylon.

The POC submitted a final list of 251 athletes and 135 officials to the Laos SEAG Organizing Committee early this week - 98 athletes and 78 officials more than the list which the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is willing to finance.

The final lineup, however, still appears to be lean with the presence of other reigning gold winners like cyclists Joey Barba, Marites Bitbit and Alfie Catalan, wushu artist Marianne Mariano, billiards players Ronnie Alcano and Rubilen Amit, archers Jennifer Chan and Abigail Tindugan, and athletics bets Julius Nierras, Rene Herrera, Henry Dagmil, Arniel Ferrera, and Marestella Torres.

Winners in the last edition who can't defend their titles because their events were scrapped are archer Amaya Paz, billiards tandem Antonio Gabica and Marlon Manalo, cyclist Victor Espiritu, dancesports pairs Emmanuel Reyes and Maira Rosete, fencers Michelle Bruzola and Emerson Segui and the epee squad of Armando Bernal, Avelino Victorino Jr.

  • RP Patriots seek revenge vs Slingers

4 p.m. - RP Patriots vs Singapore Slingers

The Philippine Patriots, fully rested, try to snap the four-game winning streak of the Singapore Slingers when they clash this Saturday in the ASEAN Basketball League at The Arena in San Juan.

In what is expected to be an all-out affair between two budding rivals, the Patriots are determined to exact sweet revenge after absorbing a 74-69 loss to the Slingers three weeks ago at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Coach Louie Alas, who was not around in their first encounter with the Singapore side, is glad that big man Nonoy Baclao has been given the green light after suffering a groin injury while 6-foot-10 import Jason Dixon appears to have regained his old form.

"With the support of the crowd and the improvements of the boys the past few days, we have a good chance of beating them," Alas said.

The Patriots hold a 2-1 record after beating the Thailand Tigers two weeks ago at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

  • Pacquiao eyes history vs Cotto

Manila Bulletin - Thursday, November 5

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - To pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, size really doesn't matter.

The Filipino boxing hero, gearing up for a world title clash with Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto that could give Pacquiao a slice of boxing history, said he doesn't put much stock in those who say Cotto's superior size could prove too much.

"I have heard that a couple of times the past two years," Pacquiao said with a smile Wednesday, as reporters, photographers and TV cameramen jammed Hollywood's WildCard boxing club to see him train.

After all, Pacquiao's most recent victories have come against bigger opponents.

  • 2 UAAP coaches fired

Manila Bulletin - Thursday, November 5

Coaches Pido Jarencio of the University of Santo Tomas and Manny Dandan of National University became the second and third college coaches fired by their respective schools the last two days in preparation for next season's basketball wars.

Some reports, however, said that Jarencio is being eyed to replace Dandan at NU.

Jarencio's contract which ended this year was not renewed although he guided UST to the UAAP championship during his rookie season in 2006. The team also managed to make it to the Final 4 the last two seasons.

It was also under his watch that two UST players - Jervy Cruz (2006) and Dylan Ababou (2009) - won most valuable player awards.

Dandan, who led the Bulldogs to their only Final Four appearance in 2001, was let go after coaching the team to a dismal 3-11 record this year.

Two days ago, Jose Rizal University fired its coach Ariel Vanguardia while Franz Pumaren, coach of La Salle University, resigned after the Archers missed the Final 4.

Meanwhile, JRU is reportedly set to name ex-PBA star Vergel Meneses as its new head coach to replace Vanguardia.

Paul Supan, Jose Rizal's representative to the Management Committee, neither confirmed nor denied the report but admitted Meneses is included in their short list.

"He's part of the short list," Supan said.
