Mystery solved in death of legendary Japanese dog

Scientists have settled a decades-old mystery by naming a cause of death for Japan's most famous dog, Hachiko, whose legendary loyalty was immortalized in a Hollywood movie starring Richard Gere.

They say Hachiko died of cancer and worms, not because he swallowed a chicken skewer that ruptured his stomach — as legend had had it.

Hachiko was considered such a model of devotion that his organs were preserved when he died in 1935.

For years, Hachiko used to wait at Shibuya train station for its master, a professor at the University of Tokyo. Even after the professor died, the dog went to the station to wait for his master every afternoon for a decade until he finally died.

Tokyo residents were so moved that they built a statue of Hachiko at the station, which remains a popular rendezvous spot for Japanese today. He was also the hero of Japanese children's books.

The dog's story turned into a 2009 Hollywood film, "Hachi: A Dog's Story," starring Richard Gere — a remake of a 1987 Japanese movie.

Rumors had it that Hachiko died after wolfing down a skewer of grilled chicken — Japanese barbecue called yakitori — that ruptured his stomach.

But University of Tokyo veterinarians examining his innards said Wednesday that they found Hachiko had terminal cancer and also a filaria infection — worms.

Four yakitori sticks remained in Hachiko's stomach, but they did not damage his stomach or cause death, said Kazuyuki Uchida, one of veterinarians.

"Hachiko certainly had yakitori given by a street vendor at Shibuya," he said. "But the sticks were unrelated to his death, and the rumor is groundless."

Dogs are such wonderful creatures and so are other animals that's why I can't take it when I see it in the news that in Chiina they're skinned alive and brutally tortured for their meat. How disgusting!! How shameless!!

I agree with you. Those people who do cruelty to animals, will have their retributions.

May be now the situation in killing dogs for food in china has improved since opening up to the world, because its now an economic giant with so many billionaires around. There is no shortage of money to buy and feed with more precious and healthy food like abalone etc. Previously china was a poor country and sadly people then had to resort to animals for food to feed them and very unfortunately they found dog meat as palatable and in abundance. Now affluent chinese keep exotic dogs as pets and spend large sum of money to beautify and care for them. A complete change from killing dogs to pet lovers.

Our dog had been with us for the past 8 years. We even grew together with my sister. I never called him a pet since he was really a brother to me. My younger brother. We never had a brother but we did not mind since he was with us. I love that dog so much that for the past 8 years, we would never go out of the house all together for long since we know he would be left alone. I know he would miss us. He was just a native dog that looked like those that has breed but we treated him like a king at home. We would always refer to him as the most good looking dog in our place. At night, he would always patiently wait for me until the wee hours of the morning just to greet me. "Nakakapuyat si ate" siguro sabe nya kasi pupungas pungas pa sya pag sasalubong saken.
But nevertheless he would still stand up, wag his tail for me. Sometimes I would just tell him not to get up anymore. But syempre hindi naman nya ung naggets so tatayo pa rin siya. Those were the memories.

One day, I got so sick and I had to be brought to the hospital for examinations. Those days I knew he was really sick. But whenever I am with him, he would still fix those ener---- for me. So I would not worry (maybe) of him. One afternoon when I was bedridden, I noticed he was gone. i asked mom that 5pm in the afternoon of where he is.. She said, "wala na si chavit." And then I got startled and said "anong wala? lumabas ng gate??" she said "patay na siya" in a casual manner. "hindi ba sinabi sayo ng daddy mo?" I could not answer at all. and then mom said, "hindi nya masabe kasi naiyak siya kanina nung nakita nya eh." I felt worse. I tried to be casual but I could not pretend at all. I broke down in tears and suddenly felt my loneliness. At home kasi we do not show emotions. So it was hard for us to let other members of the family to see that we were grieving for his loss. Right now, we don't have a pet. I was suggesting them to adopt a new one but the could not accept yet another one because maybe the new one will not be as jolly and as lovable as chavit was. We really loved that dog. We will miss him forever.

Hachi is a nice movie by the way. I realized that you can never be wrong when you love a pet. They deserve to be treated well be it pangit sila or mabaho. We must all cherish and love animals for God bestowed upon us the power and the responsibility to take good care of them.

Hello...your story is the same as ours. We had 2 dogs named Jasper and Jacob. They were with us for 8 years too. They both died within the same year. It was really very sad. They were treated as my sons coz i only have 3 daughters. We were very affected by their lost. We missed them so much.

Well they say, when your pet dies, he/she have just saved a life of someone close to you, and in your case, chavit might just have saved YOUR LIFE. that's how loyal pets are.

Hachiko is the proof of a dog's loyalty, and I cannot understand why any human being can be so senseless and cruel enough to abuse animals. Animal abuse has to stop! I wish I was there in that period of time to take care of Hachi till he died...

this is really a sad movie but very inspiring. made me treasure and love my dogs more.

@BARGZ...do spend every moment while you can. When i went overseas for a short while my beloved dog also became very sad. He always sleep at the window fronting my bedroom even during the time I was overseas. He thought that I stayed in my room all the time. During the rainy season, a storm went and there was flood at our backyard and my dog refused to go inside the house, He was in knee deep flood (he was a big dalmatian) but he stayed. My dad ordered him to go inside still he stayed. I think they tried and even fetch him at the back but he stayed. He wanted to stay there thinking i was at the bedroom. Finally my dad mustered all his strength and carried him inside to safety. That thought always bring tears to my eyes. When i got back to manila, all my sadness went away when he and i reunited. My dog, my bestfriend died last year and I stayed all night at the vet with him before he went to doggie heaven. I miss and love you Mocha.

Very touching story. I feel what you feel coz I have my own dog too. His name is Krisol. Words are not really enough to describe man's relationships with a dog. It's between the 2 of them, really. What's important is the manifestation of love between master and his/her bestfriend, the faithful dog. And this is seen especially when both are separated from each other, even for a short while.
Dogs have feelings! They are in many ways just like human beings. You got to own one, to fully understand what I am saying. :)

Thank God for these wonderful creations!

It's really hard for me to admit that I cried after seeing this movie. I'm a guy but this movie broke me...like tears just keep coming out of my frikin' eyes...
The story of Hachiko is really very inspiring and moving...I come to realize that if dogs are capable of affording this unfathomable love and loyalty to others, how much more humans are... We may have seen the worst in humanity but there is always that Hachiko in us..the potential to give selfless love and loyalty to others. Hope our leaders and our fellowmen find the Hachiko in them. Padayon Pilipinas!

how touching! if everyone was this loyal, there would be sooooooooooooooo much lesser traitors in the world. I'm sure the no one likes somebody who betrays you?

A quote says " nobody can fully understand what is the meaning of love unless he/she owns a dog, with a single flick of its tail it show an honest affection more than a man can gather a lifetime of handshakes". watch the movie...

I've heard this story, about Hachiko, before and it still brings tears to my eyes even now.
Ghandi have said "how civilised a society is can be seen from how it treats its animals." or something to that effect.
So so totally true for Japan...
unlike a very recent news about a barbaric neanderthal that skinned alive a dog in public in a country famous for EATING man's BEST friend.
Really, alot of so-called "humans" are much worse than the lowest forms of animals.

Salute to Hachi. A dog's loyalty cannot be replaced. No matter how you ignore them, they will still treat you the same ie waiting for us to return from work at your door. That's what my Yoshi always do. Whenever I had a stressful day at work, the moment I saw him when I returned home, all the stressful stuffs will go away. No child will ever do that. haha
    • Wek  •  1 year 2 months ago
For sure, many will name their pups Hachiko. If I'll have one, I'll do that to honor this loyal creation. May humans learn from this animal's fine traits.

i think what touches us most about Hachiko's story is the PURENESS of his love for his master. There was no "because" attached to his love and devotion. He simply gave his heart and he stayed true to it. And we are so touched because we all want the same thing from our fellow humans and from our four-legged family members as well ... to love and be loved with the same love Hachiko held in his heart.
