Petaling Jaya (The Star/ANN) - International groups are calling for Malaysia not to send the Saudi Arabian newspaper columnist, who allegedly posted several tweets which insulted Islam, back to his home country where he could be executed.
Amnesty International said Mohammad Najeeb A. Kashgari was a "prisoner of conscience" since he was being detained in Malaysia for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.
"If the Malaysian authorities hand over Kashgari to Saudi Arabia, they could end up complicit in any violation he suffers," it said on its website.
Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) said Kashgari must not be deported as it would contravene international customary laws that absolutely prohibits deportation of a person to a country where he would face further persecution.
"The Malaysian Government must not sacrifice Kashgari in the name of diplomatic expediency and instead protect his right to claim asylum, provide him with due process of the Malaysian law, including a fair trial and access to legal counsel and UN High Commissioners for Refugees."
