16 Jul – Spike Lee ("Do The Right Thing") will direct a remake of Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy", confirming the rumours which have been circulating since last week, according to a report by The Guardian website.
"It's a great honour to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director," said Nathan Kahane, president of Mandate Pictures, who will executive produce the film.
The original "Oldboy", the second of Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy, won the grand prize at Cannes in 2004.
Mandate Pictures announced the news in a press release, stating that the script has been written by Mark Protosevich, who will also co-produce the movie with Nathan Kahane who will executive produce.
Kahane was quoted as saying, "It's a great honour to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director," he said of Spike Lee's attachment to the film.
"Oldboy" first got its life as a manga published in the 1990s that was written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi. A movie version was made in South Korea in 2003, and in 2006, Bollywood had its own adaptation with "Zinda" starring Sanjay Dutt.
The story follows Dae-su Oh in the original Korean film, who for 15 years, is sent to prison for mysterious reasons at the beginning of the film, and spends the rest of the movie seeking revenge against the man who cruelly imprisoned him.
