Philippine rescuers search for quake survivors

Rescuers in the Philippines dug through rubble with shovels and their bare hands Tuesday after a powerful earthquake triggered landslides, collapsed homes and killed dozens of people.

The 6.8-magnitude quake hit a narrow strait between the heavily populated islands of Negros and Cebu around lunchtime Monday with more than 200 aftershocks, some nearly as strong, causing further panic throughout the day.

Local military chiefs said 43 people were confirmed killed, but officials warned the death toll may rise. Dozens of others are feared injured or missing with landslides having blocked roads for rescuers in mountainous areas.

"Heavy equipment we've requested from the provincial government has not arrived yet, because the roads and bridges are impassable," said Senior Inspector Alvin Futalan, police chief of Guihulngan town on Negros that was among the most heavily damaged.

"We are using our hands and shovels to search in the rubble," he told AFP.

Thirty-nine people were reported killed in Guihulngan, a coastal city of 100,000 people flanked by mountains that was close to the quake's epicentre.

The city's public market, court house and private homes in the area had collapsed or were damaged, while landslides buried some houses completely, according to Fatulan.

He said the city's overwhelmed 42-man police rescue squad had been joined by hundreds of army troops and volunteers in clearing debris as they raced against time to find people still believed missing.

"The army (troops) had to walk about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the last stop reachable by vehicle to reach us," Fatulan said.

Guihulngan is about 90 kilometres to the north of Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental province that covers the southeastern edge of Negros where the worst impacts of the quake were felt.

With rescuers still to reach remote hinterland communities, Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo said he feared there could be more unreported casualties.

"Sadly, we expect the death could still rise," Degamo told AFP.

Degamo said telephone communications in some parts were also cut off, leaving information from remote regions unobtainable.

He said the public was still in a state of shock and fearful of returning to their homes after dozens of aftershocks.

"We've also had to stop our search efforts from time to time and run to safety because of the aftershocks," he said.

Cebu, the Philippines' second biggest city with 2.3 million residents and a popular tourist destination, was 50 kilometres from the epicentre and shook violently during the initial tremor but no deaths were reported there.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" -- a belt around the Pacific Ocean where friction between shifting tectonic plates causes frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Earthquakes, like any others natural disasters, are inevitable. It's all written in the bible. So pray hard that all of us be given strength and courage to move on.

@Starlette.....we must know that the church of Christ is a church of a saints...the word saint means โ€œHolyโ€ in visayan โ€œBalaanโ€ in tagalog โ€œBanal.โ€

Why do we need to call of a saint or โ€œholyโ€? We call for a saint because only the Catholic has a saints unlike the other denomination has none ever since.
Brethren, we must remember that the real church of Christ is a church of Saints (1 Cor. 14:33).

That the church which was build by Jesus is a church of Saints. And the church itself has a Saints.

And who among us has a Saints? It is your denomination? Or the Catholic Church?
Thatโ€™s why you are accusing us itโ€™s because we have a Saints. And this is the reason why your denomination wonโ€™t call any Saints because you have no saints ever proclaimed yet.

Yes, we know that you only call Jesus alone and not to any saints...

well, you miss the thing that Jesus alone is a Saint. Lucas 1:35, Gawa 4:27,30.

Can you find the verses wherein we donโ€™t need a help to a saint? Just give me the chapter & verses to me so I will study them for us to know ok?

Now, the real teaching of our Church can be read in Job 5:1 (KJV) โ€œCall now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn.โ€

That verse alone means that we must call for a saint. Why? itโ€™s because according to Proverbs 15:29 โ€œThe LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.โ€

So very clear to you that the Lord will not listen to the bad mans prayer but to the Saints or the righteous man. For sure the Lord will listen to the prayer of a Saint read (Heb. 12:22-24).
Just like the friends of Job that they directly ask to Godโ€™s help but God said that they will ask help to Job. Job 42:20-21.

Remember that the saints are now in heaven with Jesus and they are keep on praying for all of us here on earth and yes they are dead physically but spiritually they are alive.

It really saddens me to know that there are those who still have the nerve to say something awful or make fun of victims (or their ethnicity) without considering the lives lost and the hopes crushed.

Let us not be careless with commenting and let's just give them even a slight tad of enlightenment at least for this time. They really need it.

hoping that the rescuers could find many survivors,it was the worst earthquake we have ever had so far since the earthquake that struck in baguio city in 19 91 if im not mistaken.we should follow japan's requirements when erecting a building.their buildings had remained standing after being struck by many earthquakes.japan has been included in the ring fire.

With this incident, I believe that somehow the Filipinos affected showed more awareness and were more prepared. We cannot avoid calamities like these. The government nor the Church cannot control these events. We ourselves should do everything to be physically and mentally prepared to handle the situation when the time comes. And when the calamity is over, we should do our part in helping each other to recover. Filipinos, please stop bickering. What we must do is to help each other to stand up and rise again from tragedy.
