PAGASA denies rumors of acid rain in PH from Japan

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has denied rumors circulating via text message that the Japan nuclear blast, which occurred on Saturday after a magnitude-8.9 earthquake hit the country the day before, will cause acid rain in the Philippines, reports GMA News Online.

"'Yong hangin galing sa Japan papalayo kaya 'di makakarating sa atin. Hindi totoo ang ulan may kasamang acid," PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio told radio dzBB today. ("The winds from Japan are moving away from us. It's not true that these winds contain acid rain.")

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo told radio dwIZ today, "There is no immediate threat to the Philippines ... (We are) very optimistic in a few days puwede na natin bitawan 'yan (We are very optimistic in a few days we can declare no threat to the country)."

I'd like to post something in the hope that the people spreading these hoax text may come to realize that there a lot more you can do rather spreading these false rumors that have not only to cause panic to the people and degraded those who have died or have lived to tell what they had gone through after encountering this tragic incident.

This message was sent to me from a pinoy captain whose vessel was hit hard by the tsunami in Japan while he was ashore and was only 50 meters from the pier when a ten meter high tsunami hit his ship.

Needless to say, he survived to tell the tale of a miracle.. and not like other people who make a mockery of what is happening in Japan right now.
      ///
We were about 50 meters from the vessel when the 2nd wave of Tsunami hit the vessel cutting all her mooring ropes. The last scene we saw was the tugboat riding on 10meter. Tsunami. In fear of our lives we threw our Shopping bags, provisions and ran as fast as we could until we reached a 1.5 meter dike beside the road . Chief cook was a little bit late and nearly carried by the strong
current from shore but thanked God I was able to reached his hand then Oiler A. immediately grab the other hand and together we pulled him up.

We stayed in the dike for 4 hours praying that the water will not continue to rise up. We compressed our wet bodies to guard ourselves from hypothermia. An hour after, I asked Oiler A. to check if we can cross the roadleading to Stev. Bldg. First ,it was waist deep but then suddenly his body submerged until the water reached his shoulders, We advised him to full back. He was very wet and shivering ,we kept warmed by our bodies until he recovered.
After 4 hours of praying, waiting, exposed to coldness and fear of another Tsunami, the Lord God Almighty answered our prayers. The water slowly subsided, what's amazing was that,a bridge of mud appeared in front of us while the other areas was still neck deep.I grab a stick and checked if it can carry our weight, and I was right . I crossed the road first followed by four crew then
walked about 1 kilometer of knee deep water and mud till we reached the Stevedores building.

We're warmly welcomed by the Stevedores ,and brought us to the topmost part of the building, seeing were wet they gave us jackets and winter pants to keep as warm.To my surprised, there were about 200 Stevedores stranded in that building ,lying in the floor waiting for instructions. The stevedore's Supervisor was very concern and gave mineral water and biscuits. He also helped to communicate with the company.

We tried to sleep but we couldn't and waited till morning. Around 0900H LT/12 March 2011, the Local Agent Mr. K., picked us up and arranged a tugboat to bring us to the vessel.

This is short story of God's love and mercy to those who called on his name. I believe 'Miracles happened in God's own perfect time.

Till here, Once again ,In behalf of the crew, thanked you very much for your full support and deep concern for us and our families in times that our lives were in imminent danger, when our hope and salvation lies only in God's hands.

      Many thanks and God bless...

Thank you for posting this. Such a poignant narration of the catastrophe. I am glad they lived to tell this tale. Theirs is a story that will probly never get to the news -- but something that shall remain with them for generations to tell. My heart also aches for those who spread the false rumors. We are beset with so much tragedy now to furthered be stirred uselessly by deceptive info.

In all these, I pray hope remains in our hearts, may goodwill triumph over deceit, and all mankind unite in love and peace -- no matter how difficult.

the thing is, how credible is PAGASA right now? It's difficult to say, considering that the track record of the said organization when it comes to environmental predictions doesn't really say much about it's credibility.

I've read some reports that the gov't is certain we will suffer no untoward effects from the nucler melt down since the air is blowing in a different direction. Granted that's true, but how sure are we that there will be no abrupt wind changes? We forget that abrupt wind changes was the favorite excuse of PAGASA (second to lack of modernized equipment, that is) whenever they fail to predict spot on, some super typhoons as well as the areas that will be hit by the typhoon. Like I always say, credibility is hard work, credibility takes a long time to build, and it's your reputation on the line. However, with the performance of PAGASA for the last ten years, it is quite difficult to judge whether or not the institution remains a credible fountain of information when it comes to natural disasters.

I'm not an anti-government person, but I'm just saying, it's better to be safe than sorry. The truth is, our government discusses the potential effects of the Japan crisis based on the information regarding the power plant and the nuclear plant reactors that the Japanese government is feeding them. We really can't be sure that both governments aren't just downplaying things to prevent hysteria. So let's just all stay safe. There's no harm in trying to be.

The sad part about all of this is that, while the citizens of other countries pay their taxes so that the government can do something, plan something to be ready, to be alert regarding these kinds of disasters, our own government remains stuck on issues of corruptions and impeachment. Imagine how much money they are wasting on the salaries of government officials who would rather sit all day discussing about who to impeach next instead of focusing on doing things that can help ease the lives of thousands of Filipinos, the officials prefer to let proceedings on graft and corruption drag on for months at a time when their time could be better put to use in trying to salvage philippine economy. During the campaign they always say three years (or six, for some) is not enough to fix everything that needs to be fixed, but they don't realize that they're wasting too much time as it is, focusing on issues like that for months at a time instead of trying to find more jobs or strengthening the economy. I agree, the issue of corruption is an important matter to address, but do you really have to spend all your time dwelling on it? before they know it, their term will be ending soon, with nothing to show for a political record, except a blood thirsty quest to crucify some allegedly corrupt government officials. This japan disaster should serve as a wake up call to our own government that other important issues at hand need to be addressed as well, not just that of corruption. And again, I reiterate, I am not anti -government person, I'm just concerned about whether or not taxpayers are really getting the kind of public service that should be rendered to them. :)

sir kung meron man "radioactive rain" na yan mauuna pa madetect ng mga karatig bansa natin yan... mauuna pa sila magpanic... dito nga lang sa pilipinas pinapatulan yang rumors na yan....

I'm a woman, not a man, sir :) Actually when you look at the map, (southward) next to Taiwan, and a small part of China, the philippines is the next closest country already, so I hardly think that will warrant much of a ruckus internationally. Frankly, Taiwan and China are two very successful countries, who would hardly panic at such a threat, since I think, they'd know how to handle it better than we do. Part I think, of all this commotion is that aside from us, FIlipinos being hysterical by nature when disasters occur (no insult intended), is that we do realize, that the country is nowhere near being ready to manage such a disaster if it proves to be true.

p.s I am calm about this. I just gave my two cents on the matter, and having already said my piece, I rest my case. :)

hindi masamang magingat, but then this is an actual FACT that the planet has a global wind pattern, and hindi papunta sa atin yung hangin from Japan... sa katunayan, hindi na kailangan ang PAGASA para sabihin ito ngunit binaggit lang nila dahil sadyang may mga tao na kulang ang kaalaman dito...

    • Vanessa  •  1 year 2 months ago
Why do I have a feeling I don't trust PAGASA? Their not even so accurate in predicting weather conditions.
      • NC, M.D. 1 year 2 months ago
that's my point as well. at this point in time, the issue is whether or not to believe PAGASA. Considering their track record, it comes as no surprise that people tend to question their credibility. So, it's really better to be safe than sorry.

Sa tingin nyo, nakatulong ba to? If you have nothing good to say to help the crisis, you better shut up. Freedom of expression is not about expressing freely and tactlessly about anything no matter what's the consequence. Mag-tulongan nalang tayo please. Bisaya man o tagalog, it does not matter. Basta lahat talaga tayo tutuong makipagtulungan, lahat ay pwedeng paging posible... Ikanga let there be peace on earth and let it begin in each one of us. Cliche pero this is true. PEACE people PEOPLE...

i've received this text this morning, pero d ko cnend...i was watching news sa cnn and bbc since saturday, and lahat ng explosion or explosion that may happen are all related to steam/hydrogen explosion. So no reason to panic since kahit japan nagsabi na mababa lang ung nagleak na radiation at hindi din ito dahil sa explosion.
