Palace: SC TRO on Corona $ accounts a ‘brazen effort to derail proceedings’

The Supreme Court decision to bar the Senate impeachment court from scrutinizing the dollar accounts of Chief Justice Renato Corona is “a brazen effort to derail the proceedings,” Malacañang said Thursday.

The temporary restraining order on Corona’s foreign currency accounts “is a defining moment for the Senate,” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement. Supreme Court spokesperson Jose Midas Marquez told reporters in a briefing that the high tribunal

voted 8-5 to stop the Senate impeachment court from revealing the details of Corona's foreign currency deposit accouts.

“The burden of history must be weighing heavily on the shoulders of the Senate. But it can look back to its history as the defender of the people’s liberty, and the enemy of autocracy to know where its duty lies,” the Palace official noted.

The Aquino administration maintained that the Senate as an impeachment court is the proper procedure for resolving questions of integrity and fitness for office.

“The framers of our Constitution clearly intended the Senate to be the sole authority in all matters related to an impeachment trial. The provisions of our Constitution clearly say so,” Lacierda said.

A sober reading of the Constitution would clearly show that the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction over the Senate in impeachment trials.

“But from the very start, the Chief Justice, his lawyers, and defenders, have threatened to provoke a constitutional crisis: now, they have thrown down the gauntlet,” he said.

“While the supporters of the Chief Justice clearly lacked the numbers to go even further and try to stop the proceedings, the TRO handed down by the Court is a brazen effort to derail the proceedings,” Lacierda added.

In trying to prove that Corona was not forthright in declaring his statement of assets networth and liabilities, the House prosecution panel, headed by Iloilo Rep. Neil Tupas, is accusing the chief justice of maintaining dollar accounts in PSBank with a balance of at least $700,000 or roughly P30 million. — VS, GMA News

Let CJ Corona exert his own effort to clear his name, family and reputation!!!!

our country is govern by laws. not to ignore. i hope all the people listening and watching the impeachment trial are very attentive to all angles. we must be objective and not subjective.
e patay ka, talsik ka agad. ganyan ang PNOY adm. i believe and have to say that cj corona is living a very decent life. in the justice scale, you will be hurt if the decision did not answer your prayer. and you are so happy when it did. we have to admit that the sc are composed of several justices that are all independent minded and authority to laws are are for, of, and by the people. why we , especially the prosecutors seems to convict, cj corona of all the accusation they gave. everyone has to right to defend/protect himself to all accusation. when a certain law about dollar account of a person will be open without his consent or contrary to law, will anyone take the place of cj corona and be the first to let his/her dollar account without consent be open. and violate the law about it. pasikat lang talaga itong mga congressmen na kasama sa prosecution. until now, i cannot find any answered accusation of the prosecution that would progress for the accusation against cj corona to be true. study more and be prudent with your expeditions.

Brazen? You trumpeted that you will let the process takes its course, partially quoting one of your mouthpieces, Abigail Valte. That's part of the process. So, what's brazen then. This smacks of consistency of what these palace lip servers were saying.

THERE ARE NO TECHNICALITIES HERE. THIS IS THE SC EXERCISING ITS ROLE AS INTERPRETER OF THE LAWS. NOT BECAUSE THERE ON-GOING IMPEACHMENT RIAL OF THE CJ, AY TITIGIL NA SA TRABAHO ANG SC. ON THE FIRST PLACE WHY DID THESE LAWMAKERS LEGISLATED THE DOLLAR ACCOUNT DEPOSITS ACT WHICH THEY WANT IT THROWN TO THE WASTE BASKET NOW. GAGAWA KAYO NG BATAS NA AYAW NAMAN NINYO IPATUPAD.

THE BASIC LAW OF THE LAND IS THE BILL OF RIGHTS. IT IS THE FOUNDATION OF ALL LAWS OF THE PHILIPPINES. SAKA NA IYANG KATUTUHANAN KUNG HINDI NAAAPAKAN ANG RIGHTS NG IBANG TAO. THE RIGHT OF THE DEPOSITOR UNDER THE DOLAR ACCOUNT DEPOSIT ACT IS VERY SPECIFIC WHEREAS THE RIGHT TO KNOW IS NOWHERE WRITTEN. GAWIN MUNA NILA YUNG FOI, PERO KWIDAW SILA BAKA SILA RIN ANG MASUSUNOG SA BATAS NA IYAN. KAYA I PERSONALLY DOUBT KUNG MAY LALABAS NA UNMUZZLED FOI ACT.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, ESPECIALLY THE POLITICIANS SUCH THOSE IN THE CONGRESS AND EXECUTIVE, HAVE A WELL DEVELOPED INSTINCT OF SELP-PRESERVATION. LOOK AT THE FOLLWING:
      1. THEY DONT ABOLISH AND OUTLAW THE PORK BARREL DESPITE IT BEING AS DISCORDANT OF THER ROLE BEING LAWMAKERS AND A PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE AS A MAJOR SOURCE OF CORRUPTION
      2. THEY DONT OUTLAW TURNCOATISM - FOR HOW CAN THEY BECOME POLITICAL BUTTERFLIES AND FIDDLE THEIR ALLEGIANCE TO HIGHEST BIDDERS IF THEY ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE HINDERED.

Hihihi!
    • ydur  •  Manila, National Capital Region  •  3 months ago

But from the very start, the Chief Justice, his lawyers, and defenders, have threatened to provoke a constitutional crisis: Mr Lacierda matagal na po ang CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS dito sa PILIPINAS. What keeps the country afloat is the Resilience of the Filipinos. Even you would have to agree that the PHILIPPINES IS A CRISIS COUNTRY, IN FORM AND ESSENCE. But this does not mean that because we the people have kept mum about this, it's gonna be OK.

We will not wonder if this will result to anarchy... due to the failure of the INSTITUTION itself to commit to the highest standards of excellence to all constituents.
    • Trystam Bhale  •  3 months ago
At the end of the day, the casualty of it all is the truth and again, the poor Filipino people wondering why these officials are so brazen in breaking the law using their knowledges and their positions.

Mr. Corona, SC judges, please no more BS: the Filipino people wants the truth and not your machinations of the country's laws.
