    PBA: SMB experiencing "Turbulence"

MANILA, Philippines - The celebrated PBA trade that San Miguel Beer made was supposed to be an investment in the future.

With the acquisition of top rookies Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra to go with the likes of Jay Washington, Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot, a new SMB squad of the future does loom.

But with youth comes loss of experience, something the team gave up when they let go of Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Paul Artadi and Dorian Pena. And that seems to be the price to pay at the moment.

Coupled with a shorter PBA elimination round, the trade seems to have been made a wrong time as per critics.

Indeed, with only 9 games and four teams being taken out after the elimination round, the Beermen may find themselves in troubled waters unless they find a recipe to win.

Expectations are high for the Beermen. With a winning tradition and a lineup that is obviously competitive enough, fresh legs for experience will indeed be costly.

And now at 1-3, it seems that the team is experiencing turbulence from its young jets even with a seasoned reinforcement in Danny Young.

Of course being an import-laden conference, the reinforcements are expected to make the difference.

In fact, no current PBA import could be classified as a one-man wrecking crew meaning that it all boils down to coaching strategy and teamwork.

Coach Ato Agustin is no stranger to such a scenario. He led a virtually unknown San Sebastian squad back in 2009 which was a prime reason on why San Miguel chose him as their new PBA head coach.

San Miguel obviously sacrificed a lot with the departure of the four veterans, all with championship experience. The impact of the four rookies will not be felt immediately but the fans are obviously not used to seeing their team on the losing end.

In fact, seeing San Miguel lose to a team by more than 30 points is devastating as seen via leading social media networks and forums.

Will the SMB squad make it? Now midway to the PBA elimination round games, the Beermen can still ably pull it off.

However, adjustments and the jelling of players should be in place. If they continue to lose games, it may very well be an early vacation for the multi-titled PBA ballclub...something any SMB fan is not used to.

How do you feel about this article?

IMHO, Smart Gilas did not beat SMB by 41 points......SMB lost it to Gilas by 41 points. Simply put, Gilas didn't play that good, SMB just got consistently lousy....game after game I might add. Don't get me wrong, I'm an SMB fan, but I honestly think SMB is losing their edge. It seems like
the players are just playing for the heck of it. "Let's just play and go home" is probably what's on their mind. The tenacity and agressiveness in the players is not there anymore, and that probably lead to the lousy performance.

New players, new to the system, need to jell, they will jell in time, we lost veterans, blah blah blah. Those excuses are for highschool basketball wimps. So what if they are rebuilding the team, that's not an excuse for slacking and slumping like what they are doing now. This is the professional league and they are professionals. They should suck it up, pick up their balls and play basketball the way they're supposed to.

Let me tell you a little story...some years back, I watched a game between SMB and Shell. There was a catch, Shell has a complete lineup, plus their import Kenny Redfield, while SMB only had 7 players that night, all of which were local bench players. Everybody in the coliseum probably assumed that the game was in the bag for Shell, but the game went on as a "nail biter" and SMB won by a slim margin. Yes, you read it right, SMB defeated the complete & import laden Shell team with only 7 local bench players. Here's another catch...that game was kind of a "no bearing" game as it was a battle for third place. Imagine that...those 7 players fought long and hard to gain a victory that didn't matter anyway, and they won 3rd place for the effort.

To the SMB players and Coaching Staff - I still have faith in the team. Remember what those 7 players have done...IT'S NOT OVER UNTIL YOU'VE WON...THAT'S WHAT THE SMB TENACITY AND AGGRESSIVENESS IS ALL ABOUT !!.

Hello Norman O(gag).

Your contempt towards the PBA and its fans could be a reflection of your personality. Ikaw ang may diperensya. Nakakahiya kang maging kababayan.

I dont know who are talented among the crops who can equal the exploits of Ramon Fernandez. I found it BORING. Unless there will be a TALENT OUT THERE WHO CAN BE DRAFTABLE and CAN REALLY PLAY IN THE NBA...can become A STAR baka magbalik rin ang gana ko magpanood ng GAMES.

    • Alexander  •  1 year 2 months ago
He he! sana mdag2an ng kahit isa ang panalo ng beermen bago sila ma eliminate. The trade was senseless because they changed their diamonds with pebbles
    • Johan  •  1 year 2 months ago
I am a die hard SMB fans since the time of the Skywalker. However with this trade sending Siegle, Hontiveros et.al to Air 21 I am so upset. Bakit ganoon? After all winning and losing many battles with this players basta basta na lang sila trade sa ibang team. Kung plano ng SMB maging bata ang team, why don't they traded Washington and Santos na wala naman pang naibigay na championship sa team unlike kanila Siegle and Hontiveros?

I think guys we should post our comments on PBA site.. para mabasa ng mga coaching staffs ng SMB... ok lng sana kung mga magagaling ang mga rookies na nakuha pero hindi eh.. parang wlang alam sa basketball..
    • Sherwin  •  1 year 2 months ago
That's a big loos of experience within a team. kahit pa sa bihin ninyong bago tong mga lineup ninyo., wala parin. New kids on the block parin sila.

      MUST READ:

The trade really weakened SMB. It's all the SMB mangement and commissioner's fault for being such a meddlesome douche bag! It's really like a 3 to 1 deal. 3 stars (Seigle, Hontiveros, Pena) to 1 in (Al-Husseini). Don't even mention Baclao and Guevarra, they're like a non entity. Sad to be an SMB fan nowadays..SMB now sucks1!!!. . .

    • ben  •  1 year 2 months ago
trading away your number 1,2,3 draft picks in exchange for 4 veterans is, i think a one-sided affair w/san miguel getting the better end of the trade. air 21 vehemently turned down trades for al-husseini and baclao and then traded them away for veterans??something's going on and looks like red bull affair all over again....
    • jover  •  1 year 2 months ago
ok nmn magbitiw ng veterans, at magpabata ng lineup.. kaya lng sana di na lng sana sina danny at dondon ang binitawan...its a big mistake.. both of these guy contributed a lot. parang walang utang na loob ang management nyan.. im sure kung saan man mapunta itong dalawang ito, sila rin magpapahirap sa smb. so gudluck smb.
