    Philippines has 26k foreign students

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - More than 26,000 foreigners are currently studying in various schools throughout the Philippines with South Koreans topping the list, according to the Bureau of Immigration.

Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David Jr., in a statement, disclosed that more than 17,000 college enrollees accounted for the bulk of the foreign students while the rest were studying in elementary and high school or taking short-term language courses.

David said those enrolled in college are holders of student visa while elementary and high-school students are issued special study permits (SSPs).

He explained that both the student visa and SSP are issued by the BI to qualified foreign students pursuant to Section 9(f) of the Philippine Immigration Act.

The BI chief cited the increasing number of foreigners studying here as ¿proof that the Philippines is fast emerging as a major educational hub in the Asia-Pacific region."

¿The fact that more and more foreigners are opting to study here is testament to the improving standard and quality of education provided by the country¿s learning institutions," David said.

BI student desk chief, lawyer Grace Gaudelyn, said that of the 17,087 foreigners who applied for student visas from July 2010 to June this year, 12,806 are old students while 4,281 are newcomers.

She explained that foreign students are still considered tourists; thus, they are required to update their stay as temporary visitors while studying in the country.

Lara said that South Koreans, numbering 11,612, topped the list of the foreign students, followed by 3,961 Chinese and 3,225 Iranians.

Under existing BI rules, only schools or language centers accredited by the BI are authorized to admit foreigners for enrollment.

There are 104 schools and learning institutions nationwide accredited by the BI.

Fast emerging? No offense to Koreans but when you're in a foreign country, you respect the locals just the way a when we go to Sokor, we respect your locals and traditions.

Lots of these Koreans are here for learning the English language.
Offtopic, may I inquire the BI on why the flood on Indian nationals in our major cities and even in interior towns of the country. surely they are illegals and why are they allow to go on lending business. usury is already illegal plus their illegal stay.

Aside from India, we are the only English speaking educational system in Asia and the cost of education compared to their home country is way cheaper. Our standard of living is also way too affordable compared to theirs. Kaya marami dito nagaaral. The one year tuition fee nila say for example in Korea, is equivalent to 4years natin dito plus may kasamang housing pa.

I'm from Clark, Pampanga and it seems to me that majority of the people within the vicinity are Koreans contrary to the scenario 10 years ago when all my neighbors are government officials and Americans. Koreans area starting to dominate the area. Some are kind, majority are racists and they seem to think that Filipinos are inferior to their race.

many of the foreign students here study English, then they leave for the U.S. let's hope that the gov't will support our youth, esp. the poor ones by giving them quality ed. hindi lang ung matatalino, but those who are willing enough to get a diploma course from TESDA, and promote vocational courses that are in-demand for abroad work, like welding, machine operators, electrician, plumbers. Yes, mas mura po ang living expenses dito, and ung mga mayayamang Koreans, Chinese and Japanese send their kids to study in the U.S., and U.K., Europe.

Fast emerging educational hub? Sixty years ago, we were THE educational hub of Asia. AIM was THE premiere business school in Asia. IRRI thought neighbors how to plant rice..... Now we are just "emerging" with UP, La Salle, Ateneo just barely making it to the list of top universities.

is this a joke? "The BI chief cited the increasing number of foreigners studying here as ¿proof that the Philippines is fast emerging as a major educational hub in the Asia-Pacific region." or maybe she should say "because it's easy to study in the philippines because the education system is crap"
