Philippines hunts for proof of slain militants

The Philippine military said Friday it had not been able to obtain proof that it killed three of Southeast Asia's most-wanted terror suspects, but insisted the trio had died in a US-backed airstrike.

Troops were sent to the isolated jungle area where Thursday's bombing took place on the remote southern island of Jolo, but they found no bodies, armed forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Arnulfo Burgos told reporters in Manila.

Burgos said the three senior leaders from the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) networks, as well as 12 slain junior figures, had been taken away by fellow militants and quickly buried as per Muslim custom.

"After the airstrike, the bodies were taken immediately," Burgos said.

However he said the military was certain the top trio had been killed, based on intelligence "assets".

"Yes, its an A-1 (information). We have something but we cannot divulge all the other information because its an operational (secret)," he said.

The highest-profile militant reported slain was Malaysian Zulkifli bin Abdul Hir, alias Marwan, one of the United States' most-wanted terror suspects with a $5 million bounty on his head from the US government.

Zulkifli was one of JI's top leaders and a bomb-making expert who had been hiding out in the southern Philippines since 2003, according to the US State Department.

Also reported killed was Singaporean Mohammad Ali, alias Muawiyah, another JI leader who had been hiding in the Philippines since the group killed 202 people in a series of bomb attacks on the Indonesian island of Bali in 2002.

The third senior militant reported killed was Filipino Abu Pula, also known as Doctor Abu or Umbra Jumdail, one of the core leaders of the Abu Sayyaf that is blamed for the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines.

There was particular focus Friday on whether Philippine authorities could provide proof that the high-value trio had been slain because of previous incorrect claims of killing senior militants.

In 2009, the military said it had killed senior Abu Sayyaf commander Albader Parad but he gave a radio interview a few days later to prove he was still alive.

In 2001, then-president Gloria Arroyo said the Abu Sayyaf's top leader, Khadaffy Janjalani, had been killed. He later went on television to prove he was alive.

Burgos said Friday that security forces were confident of finding the bodies of the slain leaders, or at least pieces that would allow DNA confirmation.

But efforts to search the remote jungle area where the airstrike took place were hampered by gunfire from the surviving extremists, said regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Randloph Cabangbang.

"There is occasional gunfire. They fire from a distance, just to disrupt our operations," he said.

The US military helped in Thursday's attack by providing intelligence support, military officials said.

A rotating force of 600 US Special Forces has been stationed in the southern Philippines since 2002 to help train local troops in how to combat Islamic militants.

The US forces are only allowed to advise the Filipino soldiers and are banned from playing a combat role.

Spokespeople at the US embassy in Manila declined to comment on Thursday's attack, referring all questions to the Philippine military.

"Philippines hunts for proof of slain militants"

"Yes, its an A-1 (information). We have something but we cannot divulge all the other information because its an operational (secret)," he said"

So they are not sure that the militants were killed as the results of the operation. And they even said this A-1 information is still an operational secret. So, why they allowed this information to be published in yahoo that can be read by the whole nation. Nakakalito yata.

Iba na ang gyera ngayon, mga Pare ko.

        Isa itong ehemplo.

Pano nila ginawa? Here's one theory.
First, let us assume na ang mga Amerikano ay involved dito. This is because they provide the data, culled from their electronic surveillance. They manage do sneak in a SIM card into one of the the group's cell phone. So naka GPS na ang location nila. Next they are located by satellite. Infrared thermal imaging then will show THE EXACT NUMBER of bodies in the hut or open ground where they are sleeping. It is just a matter of sending in a small plane wiith a BIG bomb to decimate them all. How do they know all were killed? Cuz they were clustered in their lair and the bomb made a direct hit, that's why.
The rest of the story, you can make up from these observations/theories.

Don't think the sophisticated weaponry is not found in PHI. Do you think the recent warship that docked in Manila Bay was free of nuclear weapon? Think before you answer.

@German Jose: you have more informative view than the news. Iam just wondering. Kasi, the way I know before the military strikes, they conduct survielance and then plan for their next action. In this case, they don't mentioned any date of their survielance and the date it was bombed. So, my conclusion is this: their targets already abandoned the area before thier bombs explode. Ang that problably the reason why no bodies nor remains that suggest that the bomb decimate their targets. Kaya sabi ko parang magulo.
        And thanks for the infomration.

@Careful, its ok, Some People just can't accept facts and needs proofs of body of the Al Qaeda Leaders to believe, but the point here is that Terrorist are being killed, Terrorist well known Leaders or not, as long that they got killed then its ok.

No Nognog, you're wrong. If the Government starts to think that the targets were indeed already "dealt with", they may lessen military troops in those infested areas in Mindanao. Or worst case is, recall them, while the pundits live happily ever after and continue with their activities. It's always important to see to it that the job is indeed "well taken care of".

to end this decade of fighting rebels and extremist the government should order NO MANSLAND on the jungle of JOLO, house to house search, provide full arm support and budget for the operation. the Navy, Army, airforce, Marines and back up by U.S military join hand in hand 24 hours operation in pursuit of the rebels.

How can they classify the information as A-1 when they don't have the means to verifiy it? May be the information they gathered is just a hearsay.
      • Eagle from Davao 3 months ago
A-1 intelligence is simply means there is an undercover human asset who is reliable and personally see the bodies and send these information to the operation commander. that is why the AFP cannot give how they knew to protect the human asset on the ground.

It should read US missile strike..backed up by Philippine Army.. But that's the Politics of exterminating vermin..sometimes you got to give credit to your host country.. .It's like Pakistan when Bin laden was taken out..In that case they didn't even tell them until the job was done..

This means that Malaysia and Singapore have better Islamic militant countermeasures in place for these people to hide in our backyard...which also goes to prove that our military's intelligence operations is another wastebasket for taxpayers money..

Oh so now the military is pressed to show proof! Watch out ll you Mindanao locals. I strongly suggest you people make yourselves scarce! Now that the military is pressed to show bodies of slain terrorists, even innocent folks could fall victims as 'fall guys'.

I'm inclined to believe they are dead..this operation was lead by the US and they generally won't give out this kind of information if it's not been confirmed.. This is big blow to these terrorists and with 600 US special forces "advising" it should not take to many years to clear out the rest of these savage animals from their hiding holes.
